  1. Dusty, you're still in the area? From your msg it sounded like you were only up here for a short while, and I missed my window. I'll give ed a PM and see if he's got time. Everyone's a little busy this time of year, ya know?
  2. ANY help would be appreciated. I know there's a few PAPs around here, but from what I've been reading, Ed and a few others clean out the good engines on a weekly basis. Plus, if I were to go there, I honestly dont think I could do a good enough job of finding an engine, and making sure its in the condition I need it to be in. I just dont trust myself to that extent. :-/ I need help!
  3. Oh no! looks like the link got deleted. Lemme find the pics... Well, maybe its not the "RainbowRoo." Its been called "RB" in reference to the initials of the Rainbow Bright character. An all subaru driving sim would be pretty tight, but I'm already working on two non-paying games right now. Plus I'd need to find an artist to do all the modeling, and a team to write the specialized graphics and physics engines... its a lot more work than one might think. It'd still be a hell of an idea to propose to a game dev team though.
  4. Kinda figured that'd be the case. I guess I should worry about getting it working before I worry about sup-ing it up, huh. So I've never gone to the PAPs around here (in fact, the last time I went, I was too young to drive), and even if I did, I'd be hard pressed to find the engine I need in the condition I want. And, so far, I'm even more hard pressed to find someone willing to do all this hand-holding-walkthrough stuff for the likes of me. I dont have much to offer in the way of help, or pay. :-/ Its something I really want to do, but will alone wont get it done, ya know?
  5. Where is South Prarie? I've only ever done simple little things like changing oil, brakes, and things like that. Never an engine swap. I'm still learning all I can about Subarus and this car of mine. I looked at that CCR page. Now I learn that EA81 comes in two varieties: Carbureted and Turbocharged. How much more powerful is the Turbo, and how much modification would my car require to use it? Anyway, thanks for getting back to me.
  6. I posted this a long time ago, and Scoobywagon offered to help me out and walk me through this whole thing. Unfortunately, he became grossly innundated and hasnt had any free time for months! So I figured it wouldnt hurt to repost, and re-request help finding and changing an engine. I'm a complete newbie when it comes to workin' on cars (I make video games for a living. If it doesnt come with a keyboard, I dont know how to work it.), so I need all the help I can get. ************************************* So, my story... Short Version: I was given a (slightly customized) '84 GL Wagon, and its in need of a new engine, but I'm no mechanic. At all. I'm lookin' for an EA81 to buy, and someone to give me a hand (hah, who am I kidding... I'm lookin' to give someone else a hand) putting the new engine in. *snip* okay, the thread with the long version was archived. Oops! Pictures are below, though. *snip* I'd like to save this things from the junkyard, if I can. I'm in Redmond, WA. Anyone wanna help?
  7. I make trips from Redmond to Shoreline regularly. I'll keep an eye out. Best of luck.
  8. It is a girls car. My dad took two non-working Subaru's and put this beast together for my little sister's first car. She chose the paint design. If I got this running, my wife would drive it. (I'd keep my truck, thanks)
  9. I was told that an 82 wont bolt in properly stock. How much work is involved in getting one to fit?
  10. RX: Yes, that was a joke. I'm sure I can tell the difference between the two. I can do small stuff like replace brakes, fix busted lines, replace oil pumps... necessities. But I've never done anything big like replace engines or anything like that. Dusty: I just shot ya off a message. Thanks
  11. Well the wheels are a few inches bigger than stock, so ya know, little loss in uphill speed there. And it cruised at 70 no problem, it was just those extended uphills (ie: the mountain ranges between Cali and WA called "Oregon") where it really lost power and started to crawl.
  12. Oh yeah? Like I said, "Newbie". EA82 was recommended in that other thread, but I'd be lucky to tell the difference between an EA82 and a big block v8. Whats the HP difference between the 81 and 82? How much work would be needed to make an 82 fit? Thanks for the quick reply.
  13. So, my story... Short Version: I was given a (slightly customized) '84 GL Wagon, and its in need of a new engine, but I'm no mechanic. At all. I'm lookin' for an EA82 to buy, and someone to give me a hand (hah, who am I kidding... I'm lookin' to give someone else a hand) putting the new engine in. Long Version (with pictures): http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=41312&page=1&pp=10 I'd like to save this things from the junkyard, if I can. I'm in Redmond, WA... who else is around here?
  14. I dont remember, it died months and months ago. I drove it 1300 miles from Cali to WA, though, without any problems. Engine just didnt have enough guts to go uphill even at the start of the trip, let alone the day it died. So, meet'n'greet huh? Can do.
  15. That 2.1 was supposed to be 2.2. Not that *I'd* know any better, of course. Regardless... So, it sounds like the easiest way would be to rebuild the engine thats in there, and live with 50 mph uphill burdon. OR I can buy an EA82, then find someone willing to work on it for beer money... with my clumsiness as an assistance. ... hm, if I got this running again, maybe I could sell my wife's car and use this one. I'm sick of car payments.... Okay, I'm gonna have to do some followup on this. Still need help, though. Where's the best place to look for an engine? Also, I'll need to find someone willing to help. Would I just start posting around here for help in WA, or is there another WA-local forum where I can find somone?
  16. Wow, surprising replies. To the Keep It posters: Love to. I wont bother rebuilding this engine, or replacing it with the same model, as with the new wheel size, it has far too little power on hills. What would it cost (ballpark) to buy a rebuilt 2.1L (or something with comparable HP) and have it put in? Like I said, I'm not a mechanic... not even a hobbiest mechanic. I'm a video game programmer... closest I get to working on cars is writing the physics handling engine for racing games. As far as "Saving Up" goes, the car would be really far down on the list. I've got student loans to pay off, my wife's car, and a dozen things around the house that need to get done. Which leads me to... If I do end up having to sell it, I'd want to sell it to one of you Subaru Fanatics... someone who'll use it! Where's the best place to find a buyer? Here? Or is there another forum or something for West Coast Subaru fans where it'd be better suited?
  17. So here's the story. My father built this out of two non-running subarus for my little sister some unknown number of years ago. Recently, he mailed me the pink slip and said to come take it away. So I did. I drove it from San Diego, California to Seattle, Washington, with no trouble. ... No, thats a lie. The engine siezed less than a block from my house, and I towed it up into the driveway with my truck. So now I've got this beauty, no real knowledge of auto mechanics (ie: I cant personally replace this engine), and some sketchpad notes of what my dad wanted to do with it ... eventually. I've talked with a few people in the local Subaru club, and they say I've got three options: - Sell it off as a parts car or off-road fixer-upper - Drop in a 2.1L and use it for the next 10 years - Find someone to do some work and put in a 2.5L, and try to make it an on/off-road for personal use (they say those 2.5s, when tweaked, can top 500HP?) So what would you guys do? It's an '84 GL Wagon in good condition (save for the engine, of course). Redid the interior, lifted it a few inches, and put on bigger rims. How much time/money you think each of those options would cost (rough estimate), or how much you think I can pawn it off for? They said you'd be the experts to talk to. Thanks for your help.
