Ok called the dealer today to check if the vss was in stock. I did have the codes read and they were P0500( vss ) and P1540 ( ? ) The parts person was not able to find any info on my specific vehicle (97 obs,2.2, manual ; (I wish I could put this info in a signature), but eventually came up with a # 85082AC012. He got this from a 98 I believe. Ive seen this part in a number off posts so Im thinking no problem pick it up and repalce it. Get it home and try to locate it on the vehicle. The dealer said that it is on the transfer case ( the one that controls the speedo) and everyone here says that it is on the transmission. Well I look in both areas and find nothing that resemble the part in my hand. What I do find is what I am almost positive is a speedo cable comming out of the transmission. It is on the pass side of the transmission and routes up through the fire wall right behind the drivers dash. Now, I call the dealer back and they are unable to contact subby because of the holiday. From what Ive read and what the dealer has said there are no cables on vehicles after 96 so what is the deal with mine? With this code which sensor is to be replace? Ive seen two on the rear drivers side of the transmission but nothing close to the size of the new one. P.S. how do I input a signature? There is not anywhere in my profile to fill this info in.

So that means no speedo cable, right?

So it's been about 30* below windchill the last couple nights and my wife said the other morning the speedo stopped and the cel came on. Now I've searched for a while and have not found a definate answer on whether my 97 OBS has a cable speedo or it runs off the vss. Yes I could probably slide under the car and see but it is gone during the day and its too dam cold to be out at night. I think tommorrow I will take it to Autozone and have the codes read. If it is as I suspect, vss, where is it located, is there only one on the tranny or another on the cluster? The other thought is that I am not even on the right track and if that is the case then please point me in the right direction.

It is the 2.2 and it mainly happens with light to moderate acceleration.

My 97 OBS has a slight hesitation/ jerking motion when cold. It usually occurrs upon take off under acceleration. After it warms up it seems to go away. Now this happened a few months back and i used some injector cleaner and it seemed to disappear. It has now returned. It does not happen every single time. Whats the next step.

Alright I got the idle back to almost normal. It idles at @ 750-700, smooth, with no more jumps. I was still curious if there were any codes so I went to Autozone and this is what it said, P0505, idle control system malfunction. It runs fine now so I had him clear the codes and i will go back in a day and see if the code returns. Any opinions on whether I am able to purchase just the magneto or they come as a set. My next step is to call the dealer for the answer but just looking for any other ideas.

So here is where Im at. Ive located the IAC and I pulled the magneto, if that is what it is called, off and found that the armature moves quite freely. So I figured that the valve is not in need of cleaning. I then put it back and adjusted it until the idle was at about 800. I did read that this is not supposed to be adjusted. Is that corrrect? Next, the idle is where it should be but it does not bounce back like it should everytime which leads me to believe that there is something wrong with the valve or more likely the magneto. Am I able to buy just the magneto or are they sold as one? How would I be able to pull codes? And without a manual where can I get the codes? P.S. how am I able to put a permanent line at the bottom indicating my car as so many have done.

This is my first post so I wanted to say hello to all. Ok ive been experiencing a very high idle, about 1500 after warm-up. After searching previous posts I believe that it may be either the IAC valve or maybe the coolant temp sensor. I'd like to check these out but I am not sure if I can locate them on the engine. I think I have found the IAC but not sure. Now Im sure alot of you know the diffuculty in locating a repair manual for a 97 Impreza. I know that there are downloadable manuals but with a dial-up connection that is nearly impossible. Can somone point me in the direction of these parts or other ideas and give me some advise as to where I may find a manual.
