  1. Not the most elegant solution, but you could add a back rest (low style) which would put you a couple of inches forward relative to the head rest. (Obus Forme highly recommended.)

I like a very upright seating position myself. I too have found in newer cars that the headrest is too close. It is bumping the back of my head, making me tilt it forward, something that my neck will not tolerate for long. I know I'd be making some sort of modification if I had the vehicle, since I wouldn't be able to live with it.

The back rest may be a solution. Especially since Subaru does not recommend mods to the head restraint.

  2. But how would you know if they had already been 'activated' in shipping or were otherwise broken/maladjusted? can you go back to the dealership and confirm that ALL the Foresters on the lot are like that or just a few or ?

That's a thought. I guess you would just go to a dealer and sit in a few to try them out and compare how it feels. At this point, I don't know what else to do.

  3. Just got a reply back from Subaru of America's website. Here is their explanation:

"The front seats of the 2006 Subaru models are equipped with active head restraints. They automatically tilt forward slightly in the event the vehicle is struck from the rear, decreasing the amount of rearward head movement and thus reducing the risk of whiplash. For maximum effectiveness, the head restraint should be adjusted so the center of the head restraint is closest to the top of the occupant's ears."

Of course, they do not recommend mods of any type to the head restraint.

For now, we just have to deal with it.

  4. Common ailment of these engines.

There are good write ups on doing the work, if you are so inclined. I have some Motor Mag articles that walk thru it pretty good.

Typically, you will want to replace the crank and camshaft seals, since they are prone to leaking. The oil pump needs servicing as mentioned. There is an o-ring, plus the screws on the backing plate are known to loosen and they need to be checked. You might want to consider water pump, depending upon milage and how much driving you expect to do. Check all t-belt idlers and the tensioner. Tighten the bolt on the crank pulley to proper specs (most books are incorrect). That's all I can think of right now.

Just finished replacing evrything up front. Cost about $300.00. It is not an easy task, so plan on changing it all and only take it apart once.

  5. So, I know the only 05 with mp3 capability is the vdc. Any changes for 06?

I can't believe mp3-cd capability isn't a part of all stock stereos yet.

Are there any mods to get something like a phatnoise in or something?

What about replacing the stock stereo in an 05 or 06? Anyone done that yet?

We just purchased an 06 Forester. We went to Wal-Mart and bought a cheapo fm modulator (plugs into the factory antenna). I tapped into the wires behind "cig lighter" for the power source. It works pretty good. Need to turn volume up really high on the radio, but it works really good for what it is, and now we can once again travel with the I-Pod.

I was perplexed that Subaru does not have inputs on their radios yet, but I e-mailed Subaru with this question and they did respond in one day.

They said they will probably have something in 2007 for mp3 players.
