  1. Thanks again guys. Thanks Alias for that particularly useful article on stereo installation. I have the whistle problem under control by the wire and sticky foam methods but it is not cured. The catr is quiet enough for Xmas trip to SA and back and I will look into it further then. Ian

Alias20035 suggested in an earlier post to replace some stubs http://usmb.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6152 I intended to try this replacement of the stubs as suggested by alias20035, but when tried to remove the door trim it all went to crap. Basically the Haynes manual said to remove a screw on the door handle assembly and then pop the clips on the edges of the trim, take off the armrests etc. Only problem my Liberty(Legacy) did not have a screw on the door handle assemby. After I had removed the rest of the trim stuff I could not free up the assembly to separate it from the trim without breaking something I thought. So I gave up. Any hints. Thanks Ian
  3. The cost was just for the rubbers, then was the labour etc, they estimated 1 hour per side about $700 Aus was the approximate quote. I tried the 12 gauge wire trick from the http://www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/subaru.html site. It has certainly decreased the noise dramatically to liveable levels on the passenger side.   4. Have the very common front window wind whistle. I tried the sticky foam trick and bending the sail section bit inwards all to no avail. I took it to a Soob dealer who said the rubbers need replacing and they are $250 aus each side, that's $180US. I thought that was an outrageous price. He is also the Mercedes dealer. Any comments from you knowledgeable people. Thanks Ian :-\
  5. Thanks alias, already tried the foam stuff with the sticky back seemed to make it worse so I took it off again. I think with the left hand window the sail section could be the problem as thats where the noise appears to be coming form. The right hand or drivers side here, the leak appears to be be higher up and it moves about . Not always noisy from the same section, very frustrating:madder:
  6. Well I cleaned the throttle body with carb cleaner and you are right it did nothing for the idle but boy did it fix the hesitation and stumbling off the line, the car is now much more driveable. Now if I could just cure the wind whistles from the front windows I would be in heaven. This (91 Legacy) is my first Subaru and will not be my last they seem to be a well made and engineered car.   7. Irregular idle setting, I'm told that a dirty throttle body is a common cause, thought I might as well check out the TPS as well.
  8. I am going to clean the throttle body tomorrow, does anyone have a procedure for setting up the the throttle position switch for an EJ22? Do n't know much about it at this stage other than it has 4 wires coming out of the plug I think. Thanks :-)
  9. And use NGK Iridium spark plugs they last a long while, better than 60,000 miles and you get better ignition because of the very thin electrode. :-)
  10. I see in the Haynes manual a bit on adjusting the preload, but no indication on how to do it. I trust its obvious one you get the door trim off.:cornfuzz:
  11. Hi guys, Have annoying wind noise coming from both front windows the noise seems to come from an area just above the side rear view mirrors. Can't find anything wrong with the seals, is this normal for a Legacy(Liberty in Oz) did not find any info with a search. Cheers Ian
  12. What amazed me was that the easy fix worked, first time ever. Will follow your advice and do the PCV valve next. Idle is a bit rough so I'll also have a look at the throttle body and the IAC solenoid. Thanks again. Ian:D
  13. Much to my amazement after posting I got into the car to go to work and no more rattles, overnight it fixed itself. Probably I have done 200km(120 odd miles) since the flush and oil change. Quiet as a mouse now. Thanks for your replies.
  14. I'm a newbie Subaru owner, its a 91 Liberty with 90k kms, I think thats a Legacy in the US with noisy valves in the left hand bank. From a search on this forum it appears that there are four main reasons 1. Oil pump seals, 2. High pressure O ring under the rocker gear, 3. Pressure relief valve in the head or 4. Sludged up lifters. I have flushed the oil with Wynns engine flush and refilled with 10w-30 oil. Am I correct in assuming that it is not the oil pump because its only one side? It seems the most likely reason is Reasons 2 and 3. I always go by the motto if it aint broke don't fix it! Are mu assumptions correct. Thanks Ian. Awesome forum BTW
