  1. So I finally found out why my check engine light was on...code 35...canister purge control valve.....now I need to know what this does. I've been told it is not very important, and it just controls emissions....therefore I don't need to worry about it right away. I'm putting 600 miles on the car this weekend...going skiing into the mountains...and dont want to brake down. Whatayathink? Is it safe to drive, or should I take my westfalia?
  2. My head gasket has had a light leak in it for the past 15 000 k's....and the drip (which is oil, not coolant) has not gotten worse. There does not appear to be any cooland in the oil, and the car is not getting too hot. Unfortunately I have not saved up the $800 CAN I need for the repair, so I've been using the car as is. Just recently, last 2 times in the car, the ENGINE LIGHT has come on.....but all the guages are reading ok. Does anyone know if it would have anything to do with the head gasket leak? I know it could mean a variety of things, but is it likely it is related? Thanks
  3. I've been driving the car all summer with this leak...I just thought it was the oil pan gasket, and it doesnt seem to be getting any worse...I always thought when head gaskets went it needed immediate attention. Do you think its worth dropping 600 US into my car.....body no rust..all front oil seals replaced and belts replaced 20 000 ago? I was about to do the AA lift, wheels, and a D/R tranny. I justed wanted to get this oil leak checked out first...and sure enough....the worst happened...head gaskets!!!! Ughhh
  4. Ok, I've replaced all oil seals on the front of my motor, replaced the oil pan seal, triple checked the valve cover gaskets, but there is still oil lightly dripping out of my wonderful Soob. My mechanic says its my head gaskets, both sides! BUT, there is no coolant in my oil, no coolannt leaking out of my motor, my engine has never overheated......so whataya think? Does it still sound like head gaskets. As well, is $1000 a realistic price for this job, and he will machine the heads too. The motor has 250 000 km's on it, and I'm wondering if I should just find another motor. Any advice would help alot..thanks!
  5. Jsut wondering when they stopped making the D/R transmission?
  6. Apparently my rear main seal has a dampness around it, but nothing to worry about. My clutch is on its way out soon anyways, so I'll tend to that then
  7. My mechanic has also confirmed that it is NOT leaky valve cover gaskets either! He quoted me $800 Canadian for parts, labour, and machining the head. He did about $600 work 5 months ago on the front of the motor (all seals, timing belt, oil pump, and I believe water pump) So he says if I get the heads redone with new seals, my engine will be solid. Hmmmm I dunno though, 250 000 km's....92 Loyale, $800 more bucks! I was just about to spend a big wad of cash on a lift, wheels and tires and bumpers.....but now I think I should sell my car. Any suggestions?
  8. Hmmmm.....ok, you've raised some good points re. my head gasket issue. It is NOT leaking any coolant at all...checked the oil too...not milky, the oil cap doesnt have any whitish goop on the underside, so that rules out loose/damaged hoses and I would assume a cracked head. What it IS leaking is oil onto the outside of the motor. If I park it for 10 minutes and come back there is usually a few drips on the ground. And yes, my car does also smell like burning oil... Just replaced the oil pan seal...originally thought the oil was from that, But it is still wet, even further up. Cleaned the whole underside of the engine with degreaser, let the car sit, then drove it again, and my mechanic is certain it is the head gaskets. The strange thing is though, I've owned the car for the last 30 000 km's, and it has never overheated, and it has had this light oil drip for 20 000 of those km's. So whataya think?
  9. My vehicle is a 92 Loyale, 5 speed. 250 000 k's on her.....rest of car is in good shape, just had all seals in the front of the motor done. It is leaking from both sides...mechanic said it is pretty rare to see that...both sides gone. I would consider doing it myself if it is rlatively simple proceedure. Otherwise what would I expect for parts and labour?
  10. Hey guys....just taking a survey...found out my head gasket is leaking..bad...how much should I expect to pay to have it repaired? As well, anything else I should have done while it is apart? Thanx
  11. Wondering if there are any other canucks from Vancouver that are into tinkering with their soobs as much as me......also looking for people to do some "first ascents" into the B.C. backcountry / overnight treks and all round wheel'n.
