  1. HI there, I have a 97 2.5 GT sedan. I bought the car and it had some oil leaks burning on the exhaust, and was due for some maintenance, so I just pulled the motor and did an overhaul. I adjusted the valves by replacing the shims, replaced timing belt and all new idler pullies, water pump, re-sealed the oil pump, new font main seal, cam seals, oil seperator plate, new front o2 sensor, PCV valve, fuel filter, NGK lazer Iridium plugs, NGK wires, belts, fluids, ect. Before the overhaul, I had this vibration at 2000 rpm's that would smooth out at about 2600 and higher. The motor shakes a bit at idle, and will vibrate a little around 1500, and shakes the worst around 2000, and then smooths out. I thought this would be fixed after the tune up and overhaul was complete, but here I am with the motor back in and running, and still have the vibration. The car runs good, and I don't really notice it when I'm driving the car, but it drives me nuts. My question is if this is a common thing with the Phase I DOHC boxer engine, and I'm just being anal or what? I really think it shouldn't have this shaking vibration, but then again this is my first Subaru. Is there anything I should check, or am I missing something on the tune up? Any help or info would be a big help! Thank you! (These cars rock!)
  2. Thanks for the info, I'll call tomorrow and see how much they can beat the dealer! You know what they say, "Lessons bought are better than Lessons taught". This is my first subaru and find it a pleasure to work on for the most part. The car has 105,000 miles on it, and don't know any of the service history. I thought it would be a good idea to change the timing belt, adjust the valves, and fix the leaking oil seperator plate. That was the reason I got the car, because it leaked oil on the exhaust and a shop wanted $800.00 to pull the motor and fix the leak. The previous owner didn't want to spend the money, so I bought it from him for $4000.00 Thanks again - Anybody else have any leads on some cheap parts that i'm looking for?
  3. Hi there, I own a 97 LGT, while trying to take the cam sprockets off, to change the lifter shims, I broke the right side intake sprocket! I didn't have the special tool that wedges in between the two spockets to hold them. I had a wrench on the camshaft itself, but it would start to slip off. So I took a screwdriver and wrapped it with duct tape and wedged it in there so it would act like the tool and wedge the two, helping to hold it. I had the wrench on the camshaft, and while trying to get the bolt to break loose, the cam gear broke! The dealer wants $102.00. Does anyone have a sprocket off a junk motor? I also need the rear timing belt cover for the same side, the one that bolts to the block. Does anyone know where I can get one used, or new at a better price than the dealer. I checked all subaru auto parts online, but no luck. Please help!! My Name is Garris 509-312-9599, and I live in Thorp WA 98946
  4. Hi there, I have a 1997 Legacy 2.5 GT, with a manufacture date 0f Aug. 1996. Does anyone know if this engine has hydraulic lifters, or solid with the shim plates? I have some lifter noise and wanted to try some sea foam, but figured it wouldn't do any good if they were solid. Is there any noise fixes if they are solid? It is really loud when it is cold and quiets down a bit after it warms up. Any info would be a big help. Thank you!
  5. Hello there, I'm new to this board and Subaru's. I have a bunch of other cars and have condemmed myself to a life of no car payments and constant tinkering on a fleet of used cars in the garage. I have just picked up a 97 Legacy Gt sedan for the AWD and I've always loved the look of these cars. It has 105,000 on it and the previous owner didn't take good care of it. The car runs pretty good but probably needs a tune up. I plan on doing a thorough tune and fluid change, Ie tranny fluid and filter kit, front and rear diff and motor oil. I do have oil leaking on the exhaust where it joins together and have heard that it could be the seperator plate. I hear you have to pull the motor to get to it. So, I was thinking about pulling the motor to fix that, and wanted to do some other "overhaul stuff" while the motor is out. I don't know if the timing belt has been changed, but I was told the previous owner had a bunch of "top end" work done about a year ago. I don't know if he had a blown head gasket, and had them replaced or what. Finally, my question is what should be done while the motor is out, that would be good insurance? Seals? Oil pump? timing belt & pulleys? I just need some info from people that know these cars. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
