  1. ya i have been really busy and havent had anytime on for the computer. but my project for the subaru is coming along
  2. congrats but you need to change out all the oils in the car. that would be the first thing i would do. when i got mine i drop the gear oil in the tranny and it was bad. same with rear end. just get some gear oil and some lucas. that stuff works magic. there is lucas for your motor oil and tranny. the tranny lucas will also work in your diff. then genral maintance stuff like spark plugs, cap, rotor, if you really want to get into it drain your gas and see if you have any trash in the tank. change the fuel filters. etc. its a fun car to work on cause its the few import that have room under the hood. good luck on your ride
  3. ok Rooinater, this is the whole reason why i want more flex. to rally. i dont really care about rock crawling. that is what my 85 cj7 is for. i will send pics with that sucker wrapped on rocks one day. but the whole reason i bought this subaru is for rally. my friends and i are getting bored with just slinging mud and crawling rocks so we are looking for new stuff to play with. so i want to be able rally through some really rough terrain and have the suspension for it. i already decided that im going to do the ej20 swap like gen disorder said. and i will have the drive line in about 3 to 4 months if all goes well. i can fab up my own stuff and make what ever i need. but i know wongleflute about rally and independent suspension. so that is my drama. so an help you can give will be great and much appreciate. thanks for the info you have already provided. thanks ryer
  4. ya man my sub is a 4wd 4spd ea81 hatchback. i dont really care about adding coils, i was wondering what is keeping the tire from going into the fender. is that just the length of the control arm or the cv shaft just cant get the angle or is the strut compresses completely. basically im asking what has to change to get the flex. im use to messing with leaf springs and solid axles. i dont really know independent suspesions at all. but adding a body lift to a project were the tire cant even get in the fender in the first place is all for looks and giving it a little more clearence so stuff doesnt drag under your car. thanks ryer
  5. oh ok so its just a body lift. so now im wondering what part of the suspension "on a 84 gl hatchback" is keeping the tire from going into the fender. hopfully the strut.
  6. hey all. i have been toying with my subaru basically trying to keep it alive and i had to drop the tank the other day to clean it out. so i started to look at how subaru setup there suspension. and i was wondering when ya lift your cars how are ya doing it. are ya just putting bigger coils/struts or are ya changing out the control arms. because i want more flex, i dont really care about making it higher just being able to have the wheel cram up in the fender or haveing drop way below the car. keep in mind that just because you got your car high doesnt mean you have a better lift. thanks ryer
  7. has anyone swap an ej20 into a early 80s subaru just wondering
  8. hey whats up ya i havent talked awhile on this forum. but i was wondering if ya know what could be this problem. my motor in my 84 subaru was running real rough. so i started to pull spark plug wires and sure enough when i pulled 2 and 4 the motor didnt change in anyway. so that would mean the head gasket is bad right. it is an ea81 motor. ok thanks for your info
  9. i just got done reading up on the cis thread ohnoah did on his subaru. has anyone every tried this and turbo charged. i heard that cis is very restritive with boost. i did read that the way he set his up could handle about 175-200 horses and if that is true then that is what im going to want to do. also i just got done reading some old threads and some one mentioned that the tranny would not hold up. i just want to know why and what breaks. or has anyone busted a tranny because to much motor. thanks ryer
  10. i just got an email back from a shop and they said that the rods for the motor can be made but it has to be specially made and they will cost 700 bucks. that is a punch in the balls. i dont know i think im going to be looking into shotpeening my rods. 700 bucks for some rods is a crap load of money. shot i only paid 500 bucks for my car. but at least you know that the rods wont go first. and they do have forged pistons but he didnt give me a price. so my guess that is going to be round 2 for a punch in the balls. email "There is no off the shelf crank and rods, rods can be had but are expensive $700 for a set of 4 also forged pistons are available. Thanks, Phil Tech Dept. Flatlander Racing http://www.flatlanderracing.com 603-378-0090" on the plus side for me i found a bad to the bone place to rally my car.
  11. well i like to go over the whole engine and see what is avaible. some one just emailed me saying that ea81 and ea82 cranks are forged. and so are the rods. he is a guy at a proformance shop. so i think im just going to go to my local subaru dealer and talk to a service manager and see what he has to say about all this.
  12. hey wjm are there any forged stock cranks that will fit in the ea81? also are there a tougher rod that will slip in. or will is it going to be an aftermarket part? i figure that the pistons i want are going to have to be made. thanks
  13. hmm if that is all that is different i wonder why so many people say its not worth turboing a n/a when there is no real difference. so all the cranks are casted then? and what about the rods. thanks wjm
  14. ok here is my question. ok lets say i get the turbo pistons and put them in my n/a motor. and boost it. my question is what is the first thing that is going to give. is it going to be the crank rods pistons or cylender walls. and are all the ea81s cranks forged? if not which crank is forged and which will fit the motor. im not to worry about dropping the cr to much. because you just have to replace the lower cr with boost to gain the hp you lost. so i would rather drop it a little bit and have that same boost be added hp instead of replaceing. and less boost is easyier to mange. and if the ciseasy as is the one web page i read then i will fi my motor. thank you Adam N.D.J. for tell me the place for the turbo cooling and oil lines. one less thing to think about.
  15. what makes the ea81 1600cc and 1800cc different motors. is it the bore sizes or stroke?
  16. well i dont like reading though other peoples posts when the information im looking for is here and there and i have to go through a bunch of threads. and i had already asked if someone could tell me a reliable site about these motors. hey Caboobaroo do I have to change out the whole pumpkin or will the ls pull out. and if i do have to change the pumpkin that means the gear ratio is going to change. or are all subarus have the same gear ratio. because if you change the gear ratio in rear how would change it in the front? "As stated above, the EA81T is a turbo motor already(Thus the T in the designation).. There will be no need to carb it.. it is an EA81 with Multi point fuel injection and a turbo.. just get the ECU and wiring harness and bolt it in." so the ea81t came with fuel injection. i didnt know that. but the ea81t will not just slip in it? and what cars came with the ea82t. thanks for information
  17. well GeneralDisorder the thing is i have never turboed a carbed motor and would like to. yes fi is very easy to turbo and yes it is better to turbo a fi then carb just because on how much more perfect the fuel is delieverd. but i like to learn new things. if the ea81t is so much better to turbo then i will go find one and swap it out. i was told that the ea82 will not bolt up and due to the fact i dont have a lot of the machines to make my own adaptors and what not im am limited to what i can make. basically i just have a pipe bender welder grinder torch and chop saw so i can only make exhuasts, manifolds and some suspension parts. if the crank is forged in the ea81t motors. i just have to find some better rods and better pistons. i dont know how much boost the block can handle. i just want to know what will it take to get a ea81t motor a solid turboed block. for the carbs i have a set of weber dcoes. i just want to know they are a good carb to turbo. i like them so far because they handle better then a normal carb on corners because they are side drafts. or that is what i was told. i dont know why you brought up this post comes up every week. i dont know i guess you just had to bring that in. but you should also since this is a forum people go there for help and if all they are going to get is bull**** about this and that then that is a really sorry forum. honda civics were never a turboed car but its not hard to get them boosting
  18. hey calebz im in san antonio. were are you. oh i thought the other post said the're was.
  19. hmm im going to go back to the guy and ask about that then. because im very sure its and 84 and it had 4wd in. when i was checking it out it the man selling it enaged it. and that is the only reason why i caught my eye because its a 4wd. thanks for the info. so im guess that the duel over head cam from a ea82 will not fit on a ea81. and you cant swap the motors because of the bolt pattern. do you know if the weber dcoe's is a good carb to turbo. i bought them from this guy a long time ago and just had them inside my garage just waiting for them to go on something. who knew my dad would be right in telling me to buy them even tho i didnt have anything for them to go on. i was wondering if the're different cranks and rods the ea81. some thing that is either strong or has along stroke to raise the cc. or since the motor is a flat 4 motor it will be fine. thanks and were can i find an lsd for both rear and front diff.
  20. hey im in the process of buy a 84 subaru awd car with a ea81 1800cc motor. My friends and i have always turbo charge all of our cars. hondas nissions ect.. and when i saw this little sh*t box i knew what was my next project. but i have only worked with fuel injection and turbos. so im pretty lost on the whole idea of turbos and carbs. i have already got 2 weber dcoes side draft carbs and they are set up as a primary and secondary. that is just how i bought them. well my point is how do you build that motor to handle boost and not be tearing the motor up. do ya have a site with a lot of history and information about my motor. when im done with this project i want to be running about 15lbs of boost. the idea is fun little rally car. thanks for the info -ryer
