  1. Yes, I bought an ebay remote. However, how could the remote itself affect the way the car goes into program mode? See what I mean? I may end up taking it to the dealer but I suspect they will want some money to do this.
  2. Grrr. I have tried several times now and I can't get my 01 Forester to go into program mode for my remote. I open and shut the drivers door, all doors unlocked, foot on brake, turn the key 10 times in 15 seconds, nothing. Tried it with foot on clutch too, nothing. Tried turning it 20 times, nothing. I have an aftermarket stereo - could that be interfering with it? It's driving me nuts...
  3. Well, he's been pretty good to me so far. He 'did' my timing belt/water pump at 100,000 miles. Regardiing keeping the overflow reservoir from going dry - how much water should it have in it when the car has been sitting like it has been now?
  4. Well we just checked it. The car is level and has been parked for a few hours. It was low but not shockingly so. I think we put about 6 ounces of bottled water in it and then 6 more into the overflow container. I am due to get my brakes done soon and was thinking about asking my mechanic to do a radiator flush and fill with fresh antifreeze. Do you think that will 'cure' the problem? Should I ask him to 'burp' the system?
  5. I hear water sloshing behind the dash when I start to drive my car. (01 Forester L). I thought it was a clog in the air cond. hose so we blew pressurized air into the hose, and nothing came out. When the car is parked some water does drip out of the hose. What else could it be?
  6. You had me with the blinker fluid! Yeah, I will change out the antifreeze. How many miles are the BFG's your running rated for? Think they'll make it?
  7. Also, I have consistently changed the oil, dino, every 3-5000 miles. Only repairs are rear wheel bearings and 02 sensors.
  8. Bought it new. New timing belt and water pump at 100,000. New spark plugs, radiator cap, around 110,000. Still on the original clutch.
  9. 150,000 mile 2001 Forester. I found a deal on some BFGoodrichs. Anyone using this brand of tire? Also anything I should get looked at/replaced at 150,000 mi?
  10. A new wrinkle in this - Goodyear no longer makes the Aquatred. Can I use a different tred tire that is shaved and still keep the other three Aquatreds?
  11. Oh lovely. (warning - rant following). Well, I bought these tires, Goodyear Aquatreds, from Walmart. It was the most incompetent bunch of idiots I have ever had to deal with. I ordered the tires via the Walmart website. After an email notice that my tires were in, I called the local store and they didn't know anything about them... this went on for days and calling and finally someone said, "oh *those* tires" - someone had put them in the back of their tire area with no name or anything associated with them; the person I talked to was about to send them back. So I went in and they put the tires on my car and apparently whoever 'balanced' them didn't know what he or she was doing, because I went from there to get a front end alignment and the guys at the alignment shop showed me where the balancing was all wrong - including putting a weight at four corners of the circle like '12,3,6,9' o'clock. Also even though I told them I wanted to keep the spare tire they threw it away so I had to go with another guy into the storage bin they put my tire in and find it to get it back. Also the lady I dealt with was extremely rude. Going back to wrangle about a warranty with them is not something I want to do. But I will. Going back to wrangle about a warranty AND bring up this tire shaving business is... well, I just don't want to do that. SO can I get my tire shaved somewhere else? Would a dealer have the facilities to do this? I don't mind paying.
  12. I've got a faint noise when driving my 01 Forester. I drove around with my mechanic so he could hear the noise, and he told me it is the beginning of a tire separating and that I should get it warratied for a new tire. They are goodyear Aquatreds and are around 1.5 years old. I'd guess they have around 20,000 miles on them (I drive alot). My question is, will running one new tire with three old ones on my car mess with the AWD system?
  13. I have a 2001 Forester with 116,000 miles. I would like to know how much getting my clutch replaced due to wear (same as when one gets new brake pads, is what I mean - nothing is wrong with my clutch at the moment) is going to cost. I'd just like to get an idea of how much it is going to be when I get it done, to start saving $$$ for it. Also is it something the dealer has to do or can any good mechanic do it? One more thing - my door lock on my passenger door no longer works. I guess not using a key in it over the years has ruined it. Is it repairable or do I need to get a new lock? Thanks for any and all help!
  14. Well, the CEL went out, and last night it came back on. I haven't been to check the code yet, but I *bet* it's P0420. I changed the plugs, wires, fuel filter last year. o2 sensors year before last. I guess my next step will to replace the CC. I don't want to, but...
  15. Are the two cats identical parts? Reason I'm asking is 1stsubaruparts.com only sells the front one. There's nothing listed under 'rear'. So I wondered if the part for front and rear are identical. Anyway, last night the CEL went back out, so now what? I was thinking of asking a mechanic to remove the 02 sensors and see if they are fouled.
  16. I have a question, may be stupid, but here goes... Is there just one converter on a 2001 forester or are there more than one?
  17. Hmmm. I dunno - universal converter - I don't want to be pennywise and poundfoolish. I want another 100,000 miles outta this subie! Seriously I'm leaning towards dealer. sigh.
  18. The saga continues... I called a recommended muffler shop this morning. The guy at first couldn't find a converter. Then he called me back and said he found a remanufactured one for $450. plus shipping. ouch. So I went onto 1stsubaruparts.com and found this under exhaust system, converter: All - 2.5 liter sohc00-02 $324.78 $233.84 of course there is a possiblity that I am looking at the wrong part. I am not that knowledgeable about cars, though the Internet is helping me learn. Anyway, it is looking like the dealer price is not too bad after all. Ideas?
