The problem was a left rear baring was bad. It took them about 40 minutes to replace it and do a 7,500 miles serivce. Apparently, the dealer said some of the 05 and 06 Outbacks were having baring problems.
Problem solved, case closed, noise is history.
Thank you for your post. There is no vibrating. I looked under and can see no tear in the boots. Maybe a baring like you have said.
The car is too new to need a barring at 7500 miles

Hard to see but it does have a lip.
I have a 2005 Outback Sedan with 7500 miles on it. After I went through a car wash I started to notice a humming noise from the back wheel area. The hum starts at about 30 and will stop if I reach 70. Its driving me nuts.
Could this be a problem with the tires being worn or did the car wash husrt something?
