  1. Is there anyway I can sell this legally? It has many issues, some of which are major but it runs and I believe someone would love it as a parts car for $200. The only reason it won't pass smog is the CEL (emissions are OK) but in test mode it won't display a legit error code no matter what I try. If I could sell it legally for $100 I'd do it. But I can't register it PNO as I don't have off street parking. Can anyone tell me what to do?
  2. Well, that's what I have a 1987 CA wagon w/AT. How do I get past this to the error that's causing the CL to be on. I watched it blink 8 short times for a while (~10 minutes).
  3. I've looked in several locations (including here) and can't find the definition of error #8. Can anyone point me to a comprehensive list of errors for this vehicle? Or, simply what error 8 is? Thanks as always.
  4. It was the purge solenoid last time. Hopefully that's the problem as I pulled an extra from the junkyard last time and can just replace it. I simply haven't checked the diagnostic yet because before the transmission issue I had no thoughts of selling the vehicle and it doesn't need a smog until next October...
  5. OK, so I posted about my transmission issue on this thread: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=63305 But now I had the only shop I used to trust "look" at it and then they offerred me assistance in donating the vehicle (Which let me just tell you really set me off. I pay them $90 to say yeah, we think there is internal transmission damage and you should get a new vehicle. I'm sure they didn't even look into the possible fixes listed in the above thread.) Anyway, now I'm in sort of a pickle as I don't know how to get this fixed or even honestly checked out and I can't sell it without passing the smog test in CA. It will pass the smog I believe but I've got to the the check engine light off again (3rd time in 2 years) which is just more of my time and money without knowing to what it will lead. Does anyone know if it's possible to sell this car in CA without the smog? Or any suggestions on somewhere to take this to get a legit opinion on the transmission issues? Sorry to post twice on this forum this week but I don't know what else to do. I have considered trying to adjust/replace the reverse-2-3 band myself (as silverhelme suggested in the other thread) but I've had a hard time finding a place to do it. I'm in San Diego and appreciate any assistance.
  6. Hey thanks so much for the diagnosis. This job is still out of my league for at least 2 reasons. First, I live in an urban area and don't even have off street parking. Second, I don't have the time/patience/tools to get it done. I am now considering getting it looked at professionally or if there is someone on this BB who wants to/can do it please let me know.
  7. Thanks for the increadibly quick reply. This kind of work is way out of my league however. I can do simple maintenance and exchange easily accessible parts but nothing like this. I still love the car though and believe the engine will continue to get the job done as long as it has oil in it. So one last question, must the transmission be completely disassembled/rebuilt to fix it as you've diagnosed the problem? If so, this vehicle will be on the classified section here very soon and "for cheap" no less. If there is anyone on the BB here in SD that wants to take a look (either to fix it or buy it you can PM me).
  8. My wonderful 1987 Subaru GL wagon has served me very well and the engine is still running strong although it's far from perfect. However, the vehicle has the original automatic 3 speed transmission which I had extensively serviced (taken apart, many internal parts replaced, and all seals replaced) about 2 years ago. Suddenly last week I find the car will not go into 3rd gear no matter how high the RPMs get. The car won't go into reverse either. I'm posting this to find out if there is anyway this could be a fairly simple fix or if the symptoms indicate that it's definately major transmission problem. Because of the age of the vehicle and extent to which the engine leaks oil it isn't worth another large repair investment to me. I checked the transmission fluid and it's fine. I'd appreciate any advice or assistance. I'm in San Diego, CA. Thanks!
  9. I've had an '87 Gl 4WD wagon for about 2 years. Lately I've done a LOT of driving on very dry dusty dirt roads. I've noticed that my wheels are squeaking when they roll but only if the brakes aren't applied. When I press the brakes (even lightly) the noise stops. Can this be caused by dust/dirt or is this noise likely unrelated to my recent driving? If it could be dirt, how can I diagnose/clean/fix this? Thanks!
  10. I've tried a bunch of aftermarket racks and they don't fit on the raingutters of my 87 gl. The gutters are just too wide. Has anyone used the Thule 300 towers on an '87 GL wagon? I ask because I'm considering buying a set on eBay and this is the model the Thule website reccomends. If anyone has another reccomendation I'd appreciate that also. Or, if anyone has a set (of straight bar racks) that they have used on an 87 GL wagon I'm in San Diego and I'm hoping to pay no more than $50 total. Thanks!
  11. I'm looking for instructions for roof rack installation/maintenance on the above wagon. I got a factory rack from a junkyardand want to install it on a rackless vehicle. Thanks for any assistance.
