  1. Ok, lame question..... Do I need to go back to Autozone to have them clear the codes to turn off the CEL. Here's what's been done so far. checked hoses. put air to the metal tube (sorry don't know the technical term there) and thats clear. tore apart the EGR valve and cleaned all the carbon out- that was pretty thick so could have been the issue. diaphram looks good (sp?) and although should have tested the solenoid we just replaced it with another used one (it was free, what the heck) So I don't know if all the background was necessary... just lookin to see if once we chase down the problem, does the light go off or will I need a scan tool to reset? I read on someones post about disconnecting the battery for 30 min but that caused them problems and it was in the older generation forum too so I don't want to assume stuff will cross in the the newer gen. I'm kinda winging it here so thanks in advance for your wisdom. ***update- went to autozone and had them clear the codes and so far no CEL to be seen.
  2. This is a great article! thanks. Thanks to everyone for the great lead on parts too. I have yet to test the solenoid so I'll do that and closer look at entire system.
  3. Thanks for the info. I dont have a meter but my brother does so I'll go pay him a visit. And thanks for the lead on the parts- killer deal- 57 bucks or so - cant beat that..... If thats what it turns out to be anyhow. Even better if it is a little filter. but I don't think the valve is opening at all.
  4. Does anyone know a good place to buys parts online? 97 Subaru Outback 2.5l. I can get a EGR Solenoid from my local dealer for $85 but I think I can find a better deal online. My check engine light (CEL) came on and Autozone said it was the EGR Valve. Since then we took it apart and cleaned out carbon-looks to be in good condition. pretty sure its the solenoid but wonder if a different code would have come up? Hmmm. any advice?
  5. Thanks, I stopped in at Autozone and they found it was the EGR valve. My jaw dropped when he said it would be $170.00 I'll pull it off and clean it first and see where that gets me.
  6. Short of having a friend with a scan tool is there anyway for me to get the codes at home? Some Macgyver trick perhaps? I've read (while searching other posts for info) that Autozone does this for free? My check engine light just came on in my 97 Outback. If I have to take it in does anyone know of a good place to go around the Lynnwood/ Bothell/ Mill Creek/ or North Seattle Area?
  7. Looks like a good deal to me. Kelley Blue book appears to show high 6s to low 7s depending on condition. if you want to check that out the site is www.kbb.com.
  8. thanks for the tips, I'll jump in and take a look in the morning and see what I can find. think I will start w/the easy and work my way up.........
  9. I've got a 97' OBW, and my problem is no reading on the temp gauge. engine not running hot its just not picking up the temp reading at all. Reading my Haynes manual but still not sure where to begin. Is it a relay thing or electronic control module- no clear diagram on where that is even located. any tips or advice?
  10. I found the reset button and that did the trick. thanks so much-you saved me from the brink of crazy.
  11. Hey thanks for the tips. Maybe this is battery related... never had a prob before the battery was removed and reconnected. I found out that if you take the fuse out that goes to the door locks the clicking stops. Now my question is- does anyone know if there is a was to 'reset' this or maybe I'll just have to bring it in to a dealer? new fuse did nothing.
  12. I've got a clicking noise from either the steering column or fuse panel-has a flasher type sound, happened just after R and R on engine. (doesnt matter if the key is in or out!) has anyone had this problem? -this is for a 97 legacy outback-
