  1. Yep, I could start hearing the bearing (a faint wheeze that would be louder at low RPM)...Oh well, time to dish out some $$$) Thanks
  2. Alternator change time ? For the last year, noticed that my light were dimming slightly while idling. Then lately, all my electrical such as wipers would slow down as I would slow down as well. Today, my radio turned off as my rpm went down, and back on as my rpm went up while idle or running. Turned my car off, and it would not start again. My battery is exactly 1 year old (a 5 year warranty one). AM I correct in assuming time for a new alternator ? BTW, 93 Legacy 4WD wagon, 5 speed, no air. Thanks JF
  3. Hi, I have a 93 Legacy wagon 2.2 4wd non turbo 5 speed When driving at low speeds, I hear squeaking from front driver's side that goes away when driving faster, and sometimes when I go over bumps, I hear a metal klunking sound. I just bought new brakes I am installing on Friday, so IO want to check other things. I was thinking wheel bearing, what do you think ? Thanks JF
  4. I was told to use any 95-99 Outback setup. I have found 2 front-2 rear 97 Outback whole assembly (struts, springs and topplates for 75$Can each. Is it a good deal ? They are guaranteed 3 months from a reputable Subaru used part junkyard. Cheers JFD
  5. Hi*** I might be able to pick up a full setup (Shocks, spriongs, topplates) from a 2001 Outback for cheap. I need to change my suspension, but I am wondering if it would fit. I do think so, but just in case, anyone with experience ? Thanks JFD 93 Legacy Wagon Non turbo, 5 speed 2.2
  6. Nope, you are right, I am just being dumb (or rather, running on 48 hours without sleep....) Thanks JF
  7. Thanks. I guess it means that I need to get to it from underneath....Not an option without a garage in our winter-slushy-icy rain condition
  8. I know...dumb question.... But I cant find it, and my milleage is baaaad, and I have a code 21...So I got a new one from the dealer. 2 questions: 1) Where is it lovated (idiot proof) 2) Is it necessary to remove coolant, or a quick swap will do it. In my vw, it says to remove the coolant, but I can manage with a quick swap ! And I know....Not to forget to apply teflon to thread ! Cheers JFD 93 Legacy L wagon 4WD, 5 speed
  9. 2 dumb questions: 1) How do I replace the cigaterre lighter ? 2) Can I buy any generic one, or do I need a sub specific ? I am only using it to power my iPod ! Cheers JF 93 Legacy L Wagon 4WD 5 speed Too much rust !
  10. Hi, I need to remove my radio in order to get to the cigarette lighter, as mine blew. I tried to remove my radio, but can only find 2 screw behind the cupholder once removed. ANy clue would be welcomed ! Cheers JFD 93 Legacy L Wagon 4WD 5 speed Too much rust !
  11. Yep I did, and Fixed it....I had to remove the plastic trimming on the passenger side near the strut assembly and wiggle it out while pulling with a plier from outside. Fixed
  12. Between my GF and I we will kill this car... It was cold and I tried to release the frozen cable that releases the fuel door...Anyhow, it fell beneath its housing, and I am trying to figure out how to get it back. I know it runs underneath the rear seat, but after, I am stumped.... Help please ? Thanks ! JFD 1993 Legacy Wagon L
  13. Well, unless you get out of the indoor pool and go out, then realize, damn, its cold and I dont want to go back in !!! Of course, I am starting to bald and am completely shaved, so it wont apply to me !
  14. I need help figuring out, my cigarette lighter (which I use to power my iPod since I do not smoke) died today ( I will explain how underneath should you care). I checked the fuse in the fuse box (15A, third from the top), and it was ok. Changed it anyhow, and it still does not work. It worked flawlessely before my gf left the pool with her hair wet, decided it was too cold (- 18), and had the brilliant idea of plugging her blowdryer to the converter I have in the trunk for emergencies. She said it simply stopped working. Now the lighter wont power up anything. Help appreciated. 93 Legacy L Wagon 4wd 5 speed Thanks
  15. Well, lucky for me, the rear panels have no holes, just surface rust. So I can work on the car directly. The front ones bothe have a whole of about 2X2.... I also removed that rubber moulding in the fenders...humidity trap that they were....oddly enough that's twhere all the rust started. Dumb dumb dumd...
  16. Hi, First, My car; 1993 Subaru Legacy L Wagon 5 speed I am taking care of some rust. Instead of working on my car directly, I am removing the following: 1) Front side panels (Easy, 4 bolts) 2) Driver's side mirror (electric), and I need help to figure out how to remove it please) 3) Rear side panels (Could anyone help me out here as well please , I want to take them off ) My plan is the following: Take them inside, sand thoroughly, and where I have holes, cut around the rust, apply a kevlar coating with felt(such as the kind you put on a whitewater canoe for repairs) from the inside, which will bond the 2 sides of the hole, wait until it dries, and then add putty from the outside in order to even out the surface, then sand and prime, sand again, and paint. I think it should do an awesome job, but I need to take off the rear panels and side mirror first. As well, I have rust on top of my windshield, and when it rains, it also rains from the headliner where it meets the glass. I was going to sand to metal, add putty to even it out, prime and paint, then add a strip of kevlar felt from the windshield plastic trim to the metal, then sans prime and paint as well. This week I would take it to a shop and have urethane shot from the inside to seal well. It should take care of the leak. Any comments or suggestions ? Thanks, Cheers JFD
  17. Checked out the code, Turns out to be code 33, speed sensor code. Now I simply need to fix the speedo issue and I am all set. Cheers and MANY thanks ! JFD
  18. Unlikely, As I put in brand new 75W90 synthetic when I changed my clutch 2 weeks ago, and I keep checking the levels. All OK ! It always happens in 4th-5th, between 2000-3000 rpm under load. My guesses are: 1) 4th-5th gear pinions 2) Clutch bearing 3) Simply normal noises In any case, I will keep on driving and see what happens I guess, unless someone convinces me otherwise ?
  19. Thanks, It never happened to my previous cars, but I wasnt overly worried. I guess that my biggest fear was that the alternator or the voltage regulator was off... In any case, thanks a lot ! JF
  20. Well, it does sound like turbo spooling, but I do not think I have a Turbo... As far as the flywheelgoes, I just changed my clutch by a brand new one, and got my flywheel turned (and a mighty good job they did !)
  21. Hi all, I have noticed that on my car, the electrical intensity varies depending on whether or not I am driving. For example, at idle, my headlights, and interior lights will be a little dimmer than once I am driving. Nothing too bad, but still able to notice. I have a 2.2 Legacy 1993 Non Turbo, stick shift. BTW, I do have a brand spanking new battery, and am able to start at - 25 degree weather no problem. Thanks in advance ! Cheers JF
  22. My car: 1993 Legacy 2.2 stick shift, non Turbo. When I drive in 4th or 5th gear, I hear high pitched whining noise coming from what seems, either the engine or the tranny, only when I press on the gas pedal. I am a new Sub owner, so it might be a normal noise for an AWD, but I am quite unsure. It might (or not) be related to the fact that my speedo is not working, but I thought I might ask if this noise is normal. It vaguely ressembles the sound of an jet engine warming up. Cheers JF
  23. Thanks all. I will check it out Wednesday, as it wont be as cold as today ! Cheers and once again, thanks !
  24. Thanks Subaru Girl, I will check it out tomorrow. BTW, is there a site wih the codes and corresponding issues somewhere ? Thanks again ! JF
