  1. Back to basics. Alternator only producing 9 volts. Initially I didn't want to accept a "quality" import alternator only lasting 42,### miles. I wonder how long the domestic remanufactured alternator will last. nipper wrote <lb. Check the alt and battery. if they are Ok then remove all the turn signal and brake lamps and see if it goes away.> Acts just like a Scorpio. Bob Thanks for the help.
  2. I'm new to the group and Subarus. I'm familiar with "Searching" forums, unfortunately, I've not found an answer on this forum. a] "Brake, ABS, Battery" are illuminated on instrument cluster. b] Activating turn signal, Tack & spedo go to "0" and return to normal with each pulse of turn signal light. c] Activating AC causes "Add Oil / Temp" to illuminate. I'm familiar with diagnosing and fixing electrical problems. [i have 1988-9 Merkur Scorpios that have "many" electrical problems.] However, I have electrical schmetics for them, but none for the Subaru. Your suggestions are appreciated Bob PS Subaru has only 43,xxx miles and NO trailering harness that I'm aware of.
  3. Although I'm a newbee to Subaru's, I've had tooo much experience with"disappearing" coolant. <gurgling sound behind the dash> When system cools and depressurizes, air is notorious for collecting in heater core. Add green dye and presure test coolant system. Or the leak won't occur until the engine stops circulating the coolant. It cools and slowly leaks onto a hot engine and evaporates. The green dye will show you the leak. Hopefully it's a malfunctioning coolant cap or it could be a rad hose that has a very slow leak. If inside of windshield is slimey, the heater core or its hoses in the cabin are leaking. Baby poo, mayo = oil & water mix. They will seperate. To check for water in oil 1] In the AM before you start the car, open the oil drain plug. Water is heavier than oil and will come out first. A few ounces will tell you. 2] Pulling the valve covers will tell you if you have a bad gasket or cracked head. Bob
  4. nipper, Thanks for the explaination. fastwagn, I didn't know Haynes had a manual for the 01 Subguy, 00-04 good to know for parts. Thanks Bob
  5. I'd like to install better speakers. I need to know where all the clips, screws etc are located and the correct procedure, twist, push here, pull there, so I don't damage the door panels. I've had my bad experiences (broken clips etc) with other cars. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the model year changes, so I don't know if instructions are already posted. Thanks Bob PS What years have the same body style as my 2001 Legacy?
  6. I posted question titled "01 Legacy GT Want to add accessory power in console" @ http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50688 (hope the link works). Any comments are appeciated. Bob PS Merkur stuff... "Mine was probly the only one there/in existance that has a center (rear) roof mounted antenna (fuba)." I'll ckeck the Merkur lists. Who'd you sell it to? "I never did find a scorpio that I wanted enough to buy...I was really holding out for the rareist of them all....the 5 speed scorpio" There's a fellow near Camden NJ who just bought one from a collector. Regency Red with about 13,000 miles, but not a 5-speed - the most coveted Scorpio.
  7. That's an appropriate description. Apparently you escaped becoming a "Merkurholic." Where you ever to the car shows at Carlisle PA? We had 236 XRs & Scorpios there this past year at the Ford natioinal to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the XR. One was a prize at the banquet, another through the drawing by Carlisle Productions and won by a Merkur owner! Bob
  8. Hi all, Owner's manual shows optional accessory power plug in console between cup holder & armrest. Looks like a coin holder is there now. What year & models had this option, that I could get from a salvage yard? Dealer thinks I might need the harness for it. If so, How do I remove the console? [As in hidden screws & clips, apply pressure here while pulling there]. Any ideas where to tap into circuit or is there a plug just waiting for me? The “owner’s manual” says only use a OEM cig lighter, no other chargable devices. Is that correct, as in iPod, cell phone charger etc? Some posts imply there's a fuse that blows due to a continuing draw. Yes/No? Other than Chilton & Hanyes, are there better books for basic repair? I don't intend on R&R major components [motor, trans etc] just a few mods and maintenance. Thanks Bob
  9. Hellow everyone, You can either “blame” or “credit” list members at mercedesshop.com and merkurowners.org for my presence here. After my recent purchase of a 2001 Legacy GT, I asked where to go for help & info regarding my Legacy. They suggested here and a few other places (not appropriate for family viewing). Just kidding My first experience with non-US performance cars was in the mid 60s when a friend took me for a ride in his xk150 or was it a 140? Whatever. When I was young and single, it was sports cars. Now that I’m a “responsible” adult; its a Cape Cod, a chubby Golden Retriever, three children in college, and the unbelievably understanding, hard working wife. She has 96 Chrysler Van, the son has a bike (most intelligent one in the family), and the two daughters each have a Merkur Scorpio - that’s not to say they run. Well kinda. Intermittantly might be more descriptive. And therefore the reason for the Legacy. Relaible 4wd for the daughter who scoots around the north central PA hills and won’t allow a blizzard to prevent her from seeing her chosen one. He has a BMW 320 and we all know how well they play in the slush and snow. So, she got the Legacy as a present for this Christmas, (and the next 9), graduation (under, grad & PHD). Since then, I had a few minutes of driving pleasure between repair shops getting it ready for her. Bob PS I’ll try to contribute. In the meantime, I’l be trying to get/keep two Scorpios running. PPS Next time you see an old blue MB e320 Wagon and you wanna do the country road twisties or cruise the blvd; put on a little Jimmy Buffett and we’ll enjoy the ride to Margaritaville...
