It was the wire, thanks Caboobaroo!

It's an '88 GL wagon, 2wd fuel injected: I drove to the parts store and bought a distributor cap, drove home, replaced cap and now the car won't turn over. All I get is what sounds like the fuel pump pumping. Weird. I've tried boosting it already, thats not the problem. Any ideas? I had to move the starter wire a bit and it may have been brittle and broke, I'm going to check that now, any ideas are greatly appreciated!!
