  1. Hey, if tam timing off one tooth would that present a vibration in motor that would be noticeable IN SHIFTER? <this question is from Clinton, mechanic working on my car shifter vibration problem/increases as I accelerate/present quietly during idle) Car: 89 Subaru FWD 4d Sedan

  3. Yikes. Guess I know what I'm doing Tuesday. oh dear. Thanks for the kick in the touche. I didn't realize it was serious. That's good to know!!!!!!
  4. (Postscript --- General D. replied faster than I could get this to screen.....) Hmmm.... I've been doing reading in htkysa.pdf and found on page 353 this text that says: "14. Gearshift rattles or buzzes. Worn bushings or rubber 0- rings in the gearshift lever (Procedure 11)" ??? Maybe this is a possibility?? Wonder what the dif is between a rattle/buz & a vibration. I'd love to be able to record sounds and plug 'em into messages here so you could truly hear what I'm hearing. Think they had something like that at car talk one time. This pdf booklet says that the engine has to be removed to get at the flywheel/pressure plate. I'm pretty sure mechanic didn't remove engine. So how could flywheel/pressure plate be set wrong? And I noticed those little "pegs" on flywheel. Don't you align to those pegs? (women! you get us to talking and we just don't shut up!) I did hear mechanic say under his breath that it took more time that he had planned to get the tranny in and out. It was harder than he thought it would be, I guess. And I do recall him saying something about "that funky hill holder wasn't working but didn't matter" Probably of little importance...but sharing..just so you know... Wellllllll.....darn...
  5. Thanks General Disorder --- boy, feel like I'm getting to know you! 1. After reading that thread at http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=15327, I popped into my car and revved it up while idling with clutch in and clutch out. The vibration was present in shifter but not near as vibratey. (a new word for extra vibration..) 2. GD -- I have no idea if the mechanic did something with flywheel/pressure plate while installing my "new" tranny. Isn't that something he has to do during the install? 3. The flywheel thing seems more likely giving the vibration during idle when accelerating, yes? you think? 4. Diff? Could that cause this?
  6. Hi Checked my invoice file. Two 18612 drive axles (left and right/front) were replaced 10/28/04 to the tune of $279. Same thing was done in 2001. Well, if you folks think this is the problem, the good news is that there is a 24 month warranty, it says on invoice. I'm going now to check that link provided me in this thread. Boy, hope I can get this one solved. The vibration seemed worse tonight, driving home. I thought that if the vibration stopped when clutch was engaged that that might signal to me that the vibration was coming from transaxel area back. No chance that he installed the tranny slightly off and somehow caused this? oh yeah...the mechanic also told me that he saw a lock nut on shifting rod ... some bolt to the tranny... that he thought was way too loose...so he tightened it up real good. He is now worried that maybe it wasn't siuppose to be tightened up snugly and he asked me to ask you guys about it. (Am I making sense?) Thanks!!!
  7. he said they were fine. i asked friday when i set up appointment for tuesday.
  8. Hi -- I'm going to see the mechanic who put in my "new" tranny last week. 89 Soob, FWD, sedan. I've got a vibration in my shifter. When I'm cruising, no vibration. When I engage clutch, no vibration. When I idle in neutral, no vibration. When I accelerate, gentle vibration starts until I get to 4RPM and then shifter at that point is vibrating enough that for awhile I thought it was the dashboard rattling. Nope, it's the shifter. at 4000 RPM or so, I shift and vibration vanishes until I get going again.. Today, going up a hill, though, I noticed that vibration in shifter was much more noticeable when I was accelerating even when in a lower rpm I'm thinking this might have something to do with the transmission this fellow installed. Before I get there to talk with him, any thoughts from gurus here?
  9. I understand. THANK YOU. And I'm serious about the cookies.
  10. Turned car on. I have defrost and etc. now. Oh, this feels so good. I'm ready to fix more things!
  11.  OMG I just completed my first Subaru fix. I cannot believe it...it's such a silly small thing but for me it's a huge first step into the auto repair world. OK guys, I followed your photos to the tee.. what a help. That little hose that was attached by the clamp .and that went to nowhere....well, thanks to YOUR help, which gave me confidence!!.... I went out and looked and looked and lo and behold...eureka...there's another little hose with some kind of connector inside it and it's just hanging there, too. It was coming from the engine .. i think it's manifold.. anyway, they looked to be a perfect fit... same size...with little connector. I put them together .. YAHOO...well, now I'm going to go turn on the car and see if it works. One question...what does that hose do...the one that wasn't connected? Might as well keep learning.. COOKIES ANYONE??? I'm baking TUESDAY and mailing Tuesday. I was serious!
  12. Ok. I removed the spare tire. I did a visual and finger poke check. I tried to figure out what I was looking at. Am I at the right place with that canister? What I saw was that on the left, rear, passenger side, above the firewall, there is a white cannister tucked into that upper left corner that has two tiny hoses that come out of it. It's, as I said, white. It has, I guess you could call it, a lid on it. That lid has something akin to a bulging I impression on it. One tiny in circumference hose comes out of the cannister and travels up and back under this lip that follows the line of the hood below the windshield and after it travels the width of the hood, it "plugs in" on the driver's side, below what I think might be the alternator. I can see the DOT can in that area...but it's farther back from that. There's a couple of other things that seem to plug in right next to it. Now, there is a second little similar hose that also comes out of that same cannister. It comes toward me, as I'm looking at the firewall from the front of the car. But it doesn't do anything. I noticed that thin little hose is only about oh 12 inches long or so and it's got a flexible little clamp thing holding it flush with a thin metal pipe. The thin little hose doesn't connect to anything. The clamp just seems to keep it from dangling into the space behind the engine and above the axle. Am I looking at the right stuff? Help????
  13. So where do those cookes get sent? I'm on my way out to my car right now. I get firewall now. I'm going to look around and see what I see and then I'll be back here to report what I see. THANKS!!!!
  14. Hi... Well, here I am again... I had a used but near new tranny put into my 89 FWD Subaru GL Sedan and picked it up this past Monday. When I drove it last night to Church, it was raining and about 36 degrees and for the first time ever in my 17 years of driving my car, all of the windows fogged up within minutes of getting going and then just got worse. My rear window defroster worked fine. It did get the back window taken care of. The heat came on fine..in fact, it got very hot and I had to turn it down. The fan seemed to work fine. What i noticed: there didn't seem to be air coming from the vents at the base of the windshield. I also pushed through all the buttons ...defrost, fan, heat, bilevel ..and it didn't feel like anything changed...it felt like all the heat was coming out of the front vents..the one's right about the radio. it's pouring rain right now. i'd like to go lift up the hood and see if a hose is popped I am wondering --- could that work on the tranny have caused the mechanic to do something that would involve fooling with the hoses? I am a total "don't know nothing about cars" older single woman. I am learning from being here. This is an amazing forum. I read this: "a vacuum line under the hood probably came undone. There should be a line from the intake manifold to the clear-ish looking canister on the passenger side rear of the engine bay. There should be another line going from the canister to the driver side firewall. If this gets unhooked, you won't have any control over the vent settings." Well, to a dumb old lady like me.the questions that come to mind are: a vacuum line...is that a hose? so a hose from the intake manifold (huh? ) to the canister..ok i'll look for something plastic and clear... And then.... what the heck is driver side firewall? I'm willing to pop the hood and poke around. I think I have to remove the spare tire right? But boys....help me out...? Thanks for your patience!!! I'll mail chocolate chip cookies homemade, if you want some!
  15. I am so sorry to hear about your accident!!! You seem to be OK physically and that's what really counts. I bet someone here will sell you a Soob. I'm almost inclined to sell my 89 Subaru GL/Sedan. You made me think about it.
  16. Ok! Thanks for all the replies. Nice to converse about these things.
  17. OK GD. But if it works, you wanna know? :-) Mechanic said that the cam leak could cause oil to get on the timing belt which could cause problems. I can smell "burned" oil when I turn off the car. Given that I just spent 640 on it this weekend, I was looking to buy some time. This month is IRS taxes, property taxes, state of Idaho taxes and... Hey, and while I'm at it, I have a very light vibration going on, too. I can feel it in the stickshift. It's nowhere as bad a vibration as was there before the tranny was fixed. But it's there... a little vibration that annoys. I had the CV boots and front axles done october 04. So I don't think it's a worn axle. I wonder if he mounted the tranny wrong? Should I try duct tape?
  18. OK...so I'll: 1. replace timing belt(s) even though they were last done at 116,000 miles, 34,000 miles ago. 2. not panic about the weakening ring on cyl 1. I'll switch to Valvoline Max Life 15-40 oil to help prolong life of the rings. what about redline oil? 3. I just got some "No Leak" engine oil treatment, made by Gold Eagle. I'll try it and see if it works. Has a double your money back guarantee ($14 ) if it doesn't work. Anybody use it? Can it do any harm?? Here's the company's web site: http://www.goldeagle.com/no-leak/faqs_no-leak.asp?sub_cat=Brown%20Leaks 4. I'm sure I did the waterpump a ways back. I'll double check, though. Ick. Ka ching. Ka ching. Ka ching. 5. Right tools and a manual...and a woman like me could fix those seals/timing belt? I could try I suppose. What tools? Where do I get a manual? I could also pay a male friend. He drives a Ford double cab and is blue-collar. Is very handy with fixing but doesn't care a lot for Soobs. But I could talk him into it What would I pay him? 6. And for the loss of performance on those hills? How do I know if it's the catalytic converter? POSTSCRIPT: OK...just got the message re mechanic taking advantage of me and reving engine up to higher RPM. I suppose I could try latter. Yeah, I do tend to back off. I can hear my valves/pistons working really hard when it goes up hill so I back away. Scared it will blow up into a million smitthereens. <lol> Silly women, hmm? I do wish it had a bit more oomph. I can get it to 65 on straightaway but when it sees a hill, it goes "gulp."
  19. Hi -- I have an 89 GL Sedan Subaru 5 speed, FWD, with 150,000 miles on it. One owner car. 1. I just had a used tranny put into it. (5,000 miles on the tranny and I got a 6 month warranty. Nice.) Anyway, I had them do an engine compression check. I got these results: #1 CYL=120PSI (when oil added 170 PSI); #2 CYL=155 PSI, #3 CYL=145 PSI, #4 CYL=165 I was told that the result on the #1 cyl meant the rings are weak. He said this is evidence the engine is aging and that I should start looking for a new car. REACTION?? Do you agree? Short of putting a new engine in, what can I do? Should I use 10-40 oil now that it's spring? I live in the cold northwest, near Idaho. 2. 80/90 Gear Lube was used in the "new" used tranny. Reaction? good? 3. I have an oil leak. It looks like it is coming from front left driver side of engine. He said cam seals and front crank seals. He said when doing that repair that left and right (?) timing belt should be done also. It's about $430 in work and parts, he estimated. Will an oil additive help? If so, suggestion as to what to add? 4. She runs super on flat roads and gentle slopes. But a long grade or steep grade? Well, she loses lots of power even if I take it fast at the start. We have a long 7 percent grade (US Hwy 95) here that comes from a valley in Lewiston, Idaho, to Pullman, Wash. It's six miles of constant up. If I start that at 60, I'll be at 35 in no time. It's horrid. I avoid it. She also doesn't like other hills. Mechanic thought it might be catalytic converter. Cost is about $430 to put a new one in. Any other suggestions? thought? Thanks! Cynthia (sunni) Freyer
  20. One more thing: Should I still get the Redline? It wouldn't save the current tranny would it???? I was thinking about using it in the used one to be installed. Should I still check the current tranny's oil. I didn't smell any egg stuff. It looks more like a thicker version of Vaseline...only a tiny bit yellower, I guess. I had my acrylic nails redone today. The manicurist said, "Where did all this grease stuff come from." I just smiled. Lipstick and engines. What a combination. Too bad nobody is near me here in Pullman. But I suppose if one did come, you wouldn't leave. This town traps people. Nearly everyone here is not a townie. There's something in the air.... Bye!
  21. Well, I'm back. I took it today, slowly, to a car repair/gasoline shop very close to home ...they know me...course, small town..... the owner, Darren, said there are gears grinding and growling badly inside the transmission, like something is falling apart, he said. And then, he drove it with me. He couldn't get into fourth. I drove it..and once again, went through all the gears. Sooo strange. But the lo down is that's that. His shop wanted 1100 to fix it. That broke down to 274 for 4 hours of labor,475 for used tranny with 8000 miles on it, and 300 for miscellaneous (tranny fluid, possible new clutch). So, I went to another shop that I had some CV boots done at and that friends highly recommend, even though it's in a small town of no more than 1000 folks. Pullman is huge at 20,000! He told me that they'd charge me 240 for the labor for 4 hours of work. But he worried about where to get a tranny at a decent price. A board member had suggested earlier that I call Seattle, Wash., yard with Soob parts. I called. Here's the website if anyone wants it for future use: Aarons Auto Wrecking: Used and Remanufactured Subaru Parts http://aaronsauto.com/used.htm 1-800-541-7271 They quoted me $265 plus 100 for shipping. I called back to the small town shop and told him. He said that while I had made that call that he'd been curious himself and did some calling. He found at a yard a used transmission with 5,000 miles on it (!!) for 250. His book wanted it marked it up by 75 dollars, so it went for 325. All told price for repair is 240 plus 325 or 565. I am holding my breath for that other work, too. The clutch is 4 years old but because the oil has been leaking recently (cleaned out sludge in valve piston with some fluid stuff and that caused seal to leak but valves to be nice and clean..sigh) there is a possibility, I have been told, that the oil could have damaged the clutch somehow. Dunno. Well, I arranged to get the work done. So, next week is when it will happen. Hope nothing goes wrong. Feels OK. thank YOU!!!!!!
  22. Hi -- I live in Pullman, Washington. I have been discussing a problem with my Subaru on the old Subaru forum. I have an 89 Subaru 4-D Sedan GL FWD with 149,000 miles on it. I'm the only owner its known. I may have a tranny problem. Not positive. 86subaru wrote to me saying: ask a local board member to test drive before you take it to a shop , because the shop may take you for a ride for alot of $$$$$ , + the board member who drives it may be able to put a tranny in for you" So, I am wondering if there is anyone near me that can test drive my car. Hoping so! I'm brand new to this forum. I love it hear. Everyone has been so quick to help. It's been an amazing experience. Cynthia Freyer
