Resetting Check engine light
2001 Subaru Legacy L My check engine light went on. Gas cap is tight. Just had the 90,000 mile service done. Battery was replaced, I've read that you have to reset CEL after replacing battery on some cars, figured it was a good "punt" regardless. Just can't find how to do reset the check engine light however. Any insight woudl be grand!

Q regarding Yakima roof rack installation
Nothing but pictures, and abstract at that for instructions. I have a 2002 Subaru Legacy Sedan, Q53 clips. Apparently, I'm supposed to peel back a small section of the trim to install the clips. I put about 100 pounds of pressure to peel the trim back, but it is very rigid, and I dont' want to force things. I could hook the clips onto the actual trim, but that doesn't match with the instructions. Curious if anybody has any insight? I couldn't find an online version of the instructions to better describe my question.

Estimate for a bumper repair job?
jaebeam replied to jaebeam's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXApparently you can't simply re-attatch the bumper, you have to replace the entire panel. The part that is on the ground has since been discarded, apparently. I'll try to make some calls to a few dealers, and see if they will hazard a guess.

Estimate for a bumper repair job?
I'm looking at a used 2002 Subaru Legacy that had a minor rear end accident. Apparenlty, the rear bumper was pulled off. I have a photo. The seller is telling me that this is $900 to fix, and I wanted some other opinions. I'll be test driving tomorrow. I uploaded a photo of the piece that was pulled off. Thank you for any input!

Cigarette burn repairs?
jaebeam replied to jaebeam's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAre there good web sites for finding used carpets/seats etc. (parts in general) that folks recomend?

Cigarette burn repairs?
I am looking into purchasing a 2000 subaru Forester. The previous owner was quite the ... slob. The car stinks of smoke, and there are several burns in the seats and on the floor. I contacted a detailer, and they can clean the interior, and remove the stench using an Ionizer for $60. Any thoughts on what it would cost, ballpark, to repair 2 seats with 4 or 5 burns each, and the floor carpeting, with about 8 burns? What does it cost to replace the seats? In the end, I may just get some seat covers and floor mats, but wanted to get some feedback from others.

What are the bad years for the 2.5L engine?
jaebeam replied to jaebeam's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXNo worries. I'm trying to find the break off point for the *known* 2.5L engine issues, so I CAN factor in that cost. Sorry I haven't the experience you have. . . ergo . . . the point of this message board? So. What is the ball park cost of replacing the HG, so I can factor in the cost properly? $1k seems close from others posts. Sorry Ranger83, haven't paid for the repair in the past, so I'm trying to ask others that may have had the experience.

Clutch Pedal Not Returning
jaebeam replied to Hydroman's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXFellow Minnesotan! heya! So I'm still in the shopping phase, but I've had similar issues with 2 other vehicles. Sounds like you could have air in your clutch line. Its been getting hot in MN, which, IMHO, acerbates the problem as the heat makes the air bubbles expand. So bleeding the clutch could be a good first step. Try pumping the pedal; does it get firmer as you work the clutch? If so, odds are good that you have an air bubble. Otherwise, you could have issues with your master or slave clutch cylinder, and may need to replace the part. Now, keep in mind I'm relating solutions that deal with different cars; Subarus could use springs instead of fluid lines to engage the clutch, so see what other have to say.

Price Check on a 1996 Impreza
1996 Subaru Impreza L, 85,000 miles. Carfax didn't turn up any issues. NADA places the car at $3500-$4000 for my location. Ebay of similar car is about $3000, but 1000 miles away from my location, probably not an apples to apples comparison. Dealer wants $6000. $6000 seems on the high end for a 10 year old car, am I uninformed?

What are the bad years for the 2.5L engine?
I'm shopping for a used subaru, and from browsing these boards have learned that the 2.2L engine has a good reputation. The 2.5L has Head Gasket issues, but only for certain years. I found a really nice 2001 Legacy, manual transmission, 2.5L engine. Are the 2001 version of the 2.5 fine?

Looking into getting a used Soob...
jaebeam replied to jaebeam's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI'm having a hell of a time locating an online resource letting me know how much weight a particular make/model/Year I can put on a rack. 2 Kayaks weigh aprox 130 pounds together. I see some posts stating 100 pounds on the factory rack, and others with 150, and some that say to just ignore the entire thing! I'm mechanically average. I can do a brake job, change the oil, swap out clutch cylinders. Rebuilding an engine is beyond my skillset, and toolset. It sounds like I should get a 2.2L engine, they are more mechanically sound. Thanks all for the responses. I'll continue to read up on things in the next few weeks!

Looking into getting a used Soob...
I have about $6k to play with. I want a vehicle that I can use to transport 2 Kayaks with, wasn't certain if that meant that the Legacy/Outback would not work, and if I should be sniffing out a forrester instead. I'd like to get 26+ MPG highway milage, if possible. consumer reports lists the Legacy at 29, Forester at 26, so it looks like I'm in the right place? I did a few searches, seems that the Late 90's Foresters have head gasket issues? any opinions would be appreciated, I'll continue to use the search feature to get more 411.
