  1. Finally got myself a car after looking for 3 months or more! Picked up an 04 Legacy GT sedan. 5 speed....nice car, I think.

The only thing I wish it had was auto climate control. It's in the owners manual so maybe available.

Can a manual climate control be converted to automatic? If so, anyone know what needs to be done/parts to purchase, etc...or should I just take it to a shop?

    Jeff

  2. I have bought & repaired a good many " salvage cars." One thing I like is that when I buy one, I know the damage that was done. When you buy one already repaired, you will never know everything that was damaged. Remember, it being salvaged, from a wreck, meant that the insurance company deemed it was not worth fixing ! After you buy one, it surely has to be fixed well, or you will be " stuck" too, trying to resell it with a salvaged title.

It is already rebuilt, so I won't know all done, but they have/will provide receipts for the repair.

I most likely wouldn't worry about selling it....or way later. The car I have now is an 88 Celica gts and I have had it since '94 !!

  3. thx. kilroy,

I maybe wasn't clear...it's an Outback Legacy limited....

I kbb'ed it at 13,765 (good cond), 12,530 fair cond.

but it does sound too high priced, although everything is back to 'mint' condition (the car really is clean) - but it will have that branded title...

ps - I keep my cars till about death (still have my 88 celica gts, 170K miles), so am not too worried bout resale value!

2002 Subaru Outback Limited Sedan 4D

    Excellent

    $14,665

    Good

    $13,765

    Fair

    $12,530

  4. I am still looking for a legacy sedan...turned down about 8 so far - I must be a picky SOB !!

saw an 02 outback limited with 60k, in what looks like excellent condition, rides tight for an automatic. It is a salvage title, hit from the back. bumper, etc replaced, all with Subaru parts, etc...all receipts etc. I normally wouldn't do salvage but car looks good, licensed mech, alignment good, etc...since hit from behind, I am think the engine's basically unaffected (except from the jolt, of course...)...

asking 11k - how would I consider pricing a salvage title?

  5. Is anyone (or know of anyone) a good Soobie mechanic that can check out a car for me? I am up in Seattle and may not be able to get down there but am interested in a car...would like it checked....

The owner is in Pasadena and would visit a close by shop....I'd handle payment as needed.....

If so, please PM me or email me

    jasinwa at comcast dot net

replace the 'at' and 'dot' with their symbols and there would be no spaces at all.

    thanks - Jeff

  6. AS best as I can see, at least for the Legacy (sedan), the bulletproof 2.2L engine last year was 2000. Besides engine transplants, of course...

But that was a Phase 2 engine, I think introduced in 1999.....is it still a non interference engine?

I still haven't bough my car (the wife and kid both have soobs) and was/am looking at the 98 Leg GT/Ltd....but because of a lot of discussions on HG probs, not sure.....

While mentioning HG issues, does anyone know what actual percentage of failure the 2.5 phase 1 experiences? I mean, if 3% or something like that, the percentages are still with me in general....but if 15% instead....

  7. I heard there are 2 types of tests...

    1. The sniffer that sniffs HC's in the coolant. I think most shops have this tester and will charge. For example, I am thinking of buying a 98 Leg GT and would have this test run.....(I think, see below)

    2. Some type of dye test, also as noted in this thread.

What I don't know but hoping someone can verify: Is HC buildup accumulative of momentary, for testing?

For example, what if the owner just flushed their radiator/fluids a day ago? Would both tests still catch a HG problem (this would assume accumulation is not needed)?

I am thinking the sniff test is most accurate, as it seems most soobie mechanics have it...some have the dye test..

    Nice little article here

  8. The 98 Leg GT LTD owner and I spoke and he will let the car go for $7500....he said I could take it or leave it after having the eval done.

I tried researching prices on CL, etc....but didn't find enough info. It has just a few miles less that 60K and is in decent condition...few dings and that's about it.

Do we think it's worth even having an eval done at that price?

I would have to meet him tomorrow evening at my mech so hoping to get a few opinions to help decide....I am right on the border on this one!

  9. Is a hydorcarbon test something I can have done localy? Or do I mail it out. If so please give me recomendation to have one done.

(perferably a site sponsor or something becasue this site is great and I really appreciate it)

I realize it may be a waste of money but I would like to be sure before i remove my engine again.

Also please advise a good web site to get some good OEM parts (sponsor again)

Closest dealership is 300 miles away and they dont stock any thing.

Thanks alot for all of your help.

    Ben

A good soobie mechanic (dealer or not) will be able to do the test. They measure the HC coming out of the radiator...

I think on this site there is info on it. There are kits you can buy also, to test yourself...

Check this link out for my local soobie guy...

    Click me

"If you don’t have the luxury of a 4 gas analyzer you can purchase an engine block leak detection kit from your local NAPA autoparts store. Part Number 700-1006 for under $50. This kit uses a fluid that changes color when it chemically reacts with coolant containing exhaust gas."

  10. SO I got under there and saw the tcu and wiring....doesn't seem that I can get a paperclip in there to hook a meter up to...having trouble getting the connector off as I can see the backside if the conn to see how it comes off.

But I did notice that just by the TCU there is a pair of green single pin connectors that are disconnected. One is a yellow wire, the other side is a black wire....I will see if I can see where they go...

Should it be connected? Don't want to do it yet till I know I won't screw anything up. Looks like the conns are meant for each other.

This is not the black/green conns on the other side of the steering column mean for the ecu stuff....

  11. jasinwa,

But, you have the right idea on asking in this forum. The people here are terrific, and the knowledge that you'll gain will only make your Subie ownership more enjoyable. There are all kinds of tricks to learn. Good Luck!

yup, wouldn't do anything at this time without knowing it's been done with success!! Still have to buy the car!...but I do have my duaghter's 93 Leg LS to play with

    @ subrat84 - I don't think it's hj either....right up the alley for my question anyway!
