  1. there is nothing wrong with the switch. Get a manual or do a search on this. There is a resistor block in the air box under the glove box. High speed is a direct feed to the blower motor. Lower speeds go through resisters. You need this block. Buy a new one, as used ones that work are few and far between.

Do you know where I can find a manual? I did a search on Ebay but couldn't find a service manual directly for a 93 Subaru Legacy. I have a Chiltons, but don't see this info in there. Oh, and is that something I can pick up at an auto parts store or does it come from the dealer? Thanks!

  2. $725? Damn! that would pay for the part, and my gas to come up from California to do it as well. . .

This install all went pretty well. I am new to fixing my own stuff but we were able to get the new one in. There were a few tricky bolts to get to though. They were up under the head liner and it was a little difficult without removing it completely. There is probably a trick to this, but oh well it's done and I now have my seatbelt back.

What a pain! I don't think these type of safety belt mechanisms are the smartest invention. You still have to make a conscious effort to put the lap belt on, so what's the point.....to remind you to do that??

oh and BTW.....Thanks to everyone who posts to this board.....I have learned so much already. Thanks for all your help and suggestions.

  3. The mechanism may be jammed.

It wouldn't move at all with the allen key? I'd suggest taking the trim pieces off and trying to diagnose it.

It moved very little and then the allen key wouldn't turn anymore. I just bought a salvaged one and am going to put it in today. The cable seems to be jammed up somewhere and I took all the panels off around it and can't figure out what's wrong. I found one for $125 and the guy said it was super easy to put in. Which is better than the $725 the Subaru specialist wanted to charge.

  4. My 92 Legacy wagon had the "mouse trap" seat belts, the drivers side quit working and I wound up with a greasy shirt when the cable finally fell out of overhead pillar. Replaced the mechanism with one from a salvage yard, and if I remember correctly, the owners manual mentioned a way of manually retracting the seat belt by using a hex tool from the tool kit----ok, I remember now---it was an allen key type of deal found on the underside of the center console lid, and where the belts meet the floor is where you "crank" it back until you can have the dealer check it out for you for safety's sake.

I have a 93 Legacy that this just happened too. I tried cranking the cable back but it doesn't move more than an inch. Any idea why this might be happening?

  5. And why can't I find anything in my Chiltons on the automatic safety mechanism/motor....anything. :banghead:

Yesterday I went to get out of my car and my seat belt did not slide all the way open. About an hour later the (greasy!!) cable came out in a big loop, and is now stuck that way. I am not sure what happened here, but when I called the dealer they said it would cost $200-$600 to fix it , and they would need it for a couple of days. Does anyone have any suggestions of how I can take care of this myself? I have a 1993 Subaru Legacy L Wagon. I appreciate any help I can get.

I have looked through the forum and did find some info. but I guess I need some explanation. I am new to DIY'ing my car and want to save some money if I can.

    Thank You

  6. Your car would be a good candidate for a Canadian Seat Belt swap. I'd just rip out all that power belt stuff, find a Canadian person with a trashed car or a Canadian Spec car and pull all the belts out of it and replace them with yours.

I went through all the other postings and tried to wind the cable back in, but it only goes about an inch and stops. I'm not sure if I need to replace the whole track or I should do as you suggested and just put in a regular seatbelt. If I could just get the cable to wind back in and the belt lock to slide all the way back and stay there that would be fine too. Does anyone have any suggestions besides taking it in to the dealer or auto repair place?
