  1. i said it before, i am a tech...not for subaru...but soon to be for mercedes-benz. anyways...i read up in school on how hard it is to do the water pump, and talked to my friend who had done one... the book on it calls for 2.9 hours-ish including R&R of the timing belts/covers...and i read up on the procedure. it doesnt seem too too bad, i just need to get ahold of 2 tools needed to hold the crank and hold the cams...then it should be relatively easy. what are parts costs like? book on a water pump said i believe 91 dollars...now if i went to a reputable all-around repair shop to have this done, i figured it would be in the 300 dollar range...why do you guys say its double? also, should i definitely do the water pump? or is it a situation where if it aint broke dont fix it? i was thinking about driving the vehicle a little while to see if its got any over-heating issues...and if so i was going to replace the pump... also...in 93 did they have a spot on the odometer for the 1xx,xxx.x mark? or could it have rolled over from 99,999.9
  2. what is the pain-in-the-rump roast factor of doing that? how easily accessible is the water pump and timing belt seals? give me the heads up on the procedure...it looks like i have a lot of room to work with.
  3. I drove the car...it felt good...is the suspension very soft on these? it compressed very easy when i did the bounce test, but it rebounded only one when i was done. shifter felt good, clutch didnt slip, and grabbed when i wanted it to... engine itself was pretty dirty id say though. i suppose thats to be expected... paint looked beat, some areas the clear was coming off, mainly bumpers it appeared. so what do you guys think, 93 impreza, 1.8 l 5 speed fwd. 50 thousand, no obvious problems...1500 bucks?
  4. is there anyway to check for codes without a scanner? i know on OBDI gm vehicles you can short 2 pins on the aldl...and i know nissans you can do something similar, as well as fords...so is there any way?
  5. ok you guys were right...i had a friend go look at it for the time being because im out of the state its in...it is indeed a 1.8L. what i'd like to know now is if its a horizontally opposed engine or is it a typical inline 4? also, my friend said it isnt AWD but FWD...is this a possibility or was my friend mistaken?
  6. i suppose someone the girl selling the car is either confused on the engine, or the year then. its the original engine regardless of what size or year of the vehicle...ill find out more at some point next week...
  7. 1500 bucks...id say thats a giveaway price. about the mentioned maintenance items, im a tech...whats the labor look like on doing that?
  8. the vehicle has been driven since 93...just not a lot of miles. it spent most of its life in tenessee. it was a female driving it as well...just a few more things..
  9. hey guys im new to this board...a friend of mine is selling a 1993 impreza, 2.2L 5 speed with about 50 thousand miles. this seems like a steal to me, and was wondering, besides all the basic checks, is there anything very specific i should look for on the vehicle as far as problems go? i dont know if there is anything peculiar about this car as opposed to any other..
