  1. I've always wired into a blank circuit just for the ease of troubleshooting later on. Interesting.

     

    It's the same principle as wiring a light fixture on the same circuit as your refrigerator. If the fridge stops running and the light still works, then the circuit is not the problem. The wiring in my old Mercury Topaz was the same - the horn and some of the lights (but I really can't remember) would be on the same circuit; therefore, if the lights stopped working, but I could still honk the horn, then I could eliminate the fuse and everything else on the circuit.

  2. I just picked up a set from the surplus aisles at Princess Auto. (Canadians will know what I mean.) The kit has everything I need, except for a relay - lights, mounting hardware, wiring harness, illuminated switch, and even instructions. Does anyone out there have a Subaru fog light switch in their junk pile? I'd like the dash to look factory if at all possible. One more thing... What fuse did you folks use when you installed your lights - an unused fuse or one on an existing circuit? I'm inclined toward using an existing circuit to help with troubleshooting.

    If you need a wiper motor and arm, I have at least the wiper motor (dunno about the arm?) off the back of my wagon's old hatch. Worked just fine.

     

    If you can use it, and want it (its from an 88 wagon), I'll give it to you for the cost of shipping. Let me know.

  4. I'm experiencing the condition described in this repair manual. Fan speeds 1 and 2 are non-functional, but 3 and 4 work just fine. It has great instructions for getting to the resistor block, but omits what should be done when one gets there. Could the author of this repair manual add the repair steps to the repair manual? Failing that, can anyone else fill in the missing steps?

  5. I've come into a set of Bosch fog lights. How do you folks control your auxillary lighting? Do you install extra switches or wire it into the existing circuitry. I'm thinking that the parking little-used light switch on top of the steering column is a good candidate for these lights. What do you think?

  6. I'll be attempting to fix my rear wiper motor this weekend. The mechanic I bought the car from says that the motor is siezed, but I'm going to attempt to take it apart, and clean and lube it to see if that works before heading over the junkyard. They have 3 of them and want $75. The dealer wants $220.

     

    Second, there was no rear wiper arm on the car when I bought it. My questions to all of you... The post for the wiper arm on the motor looks like it's tapered and the arms that I see at the local auto parts store appear to have cylindrical holes. Will I need a Subaru-specific arm or can I buy an aftermarket arm? Second, if I can buy an aftermarket arm, what length do I need?

     

    Front wiper question now... I need to replace the tubing for the driver side washer nozzle. What size (diameter) do I need?

I've got vent control (i.e. I can switch from panel vents to floor to defogger), and I checked all of the hoses running from the canister on the driver side to the white canister on the passenger side. All of them are connected and look to be in good shape. The rubber is supple and clean, not dry and cracked. This weekend I'll get into the engine a bit more and try to find the culprit. If you have any other tips, please don't hold back and don't worry about sounding obvious or patronizing. I'll take all of the help I can get.

  8. Daeron, I went to Future Shop, asked for the dash kit for a 94 Loyale and this is what they handed me. I thought it was pretty cool. Do you think I paid too much?

     

    BTW, I cut the wiring harness off of the factory Clarion AM/FM radio that I was replacing and used it because I couldn't find an aftermarket harness in any of my usual haunts around town. Not a single wiring diagram that I found on the Web matched what was actually in the car; therefore, I had to bash them all together and come up with my own, which worked quite well, oddly enough. Now that it's wired up properly and the dash kit is installed with a proper DIN shaft, it looks like there's something in the back of the cavity that's preventing me from sliding the stereo all the way in (trip odometer cables, perhaps?). This looks like my first bit of education into becoming an older generation Subaru owner.

     

    I'll let you know how it turns out.

  9. I'm replacing the AM/FM radio in my newly acquired '94 Loyale with a new head unit and bought the aftermarket dash kit, which has faceplates for a number of models. Naturally, I used the faceplate for my car (Faceplate D, according to the instructions) and can't bring myself to trash the leftovers, so here's what I'm proposing...

     

    If you're interested in one of the faceplates below, send me $5.00 by PayPal to cover shipping and I'll send the faceplate, associated hardware and a photocopy of the instructions to you. First come, first served. I paid $25, so I'm not trying to gouge anyone here. It's just that it offends my sensibilities to throw out something new that can be used by someone else. Here is what I have available:

     

    Faceplate A - Justy 1987-94

    Faceplate B - Legacy 1990-94

    Faceplate C - Brat 1982-87, DL/GL (sedan/wagon/hatchback) 1981-85

  10. Thanks, pal, and it's good to be aboard. I'll do the dirt road test when I'm on my way home from work. Got lots of 'em around my place. As for the indicator light, that's a good point - eliminate the easy stuff first.

     

    Here's another bonehead 4x4 question: Do I need to be stopped to switch into 4x4 mode, or can I do it on the fly? (There was no owners manual in the car when I bought it.)

  11. I just bought a '94 Loyale (5-speed manual) this week with 204k kms. There's a 4x4 switch on the shifter knob , but it doesn't seem to do anything. Is there supposed to be an indicator light on the dash when 4x4 is engaged? Second, how can I tell if the car is in 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive? I have the Haynes manual, but it's not glaringly obvious how to troubleshoot 4x4 issues. In fact, there doesn't seem to be too much on 4x4 in it at all; most of the transmission-related content is on 2-wheel drive.
