  1. My 2005 legacy wagon with 4 speed automatic transmission is due for an ATF change (60 K). I tried to order the recommended Idemitsu HP ATF from subaruparts.com but apparently they will no longer ship the transmission fluid. The stealer in Houston quotes $10+ a quart so that is getting up there. Does anyone know a reasonable priced source for this product that will ship it or should I switch to using the latest version of Dexatron ATF. Does anyone here have any experience doing this? Regards Al
  2. Posted this back in December but nobody was able to reply. While performing some basic maintenance on my 05 Legacy 2.5I with 50,000 miles I notice that the front control arm (or A arm) bushing shows some damage. This bushing is attached to the car body and keeps the control arm from being pushed back. The bushing shows signs that the rubber has lost contact with the metal suround and has a torn out section (approx 5/8") clearly visible. The picture shows the bushing from the top but both top an bottom look similar. Both sides of the car show the same bushing problem. The car has mostly highway miles an has never been offroad or handled rough. Is this reason for concern? Should these bushings be replaced? Has anyone had a similar problem? Any help is greatly appreciated. Attached Thumbnails

  4. The surface was cleaned and perfectly smooth. I only used the copper cote to make sure it would seal good. Water pump was OEM with 40 k miles on it. Are there any other gaskets in this area that could leak?
  5. My 92 subaru has a rather persistant water leak on or close to the bottom of the water pump gasket. It all started when the car got overheated and the leak appeared. To fix it I remove the water pump and replaced the gasket. Gasket was coated with copper cote and went on perfectly. After reasemling the car an filling it with antifreeze the leak appeared again in the same place. Has anyone ever had this probem? Can it be related to a part other than the water pump? Please let me know if anyone can help.
  6. Thanks for the info. The filter is just a sock and their is no filter in the engine bay. Nor have I found one underneath the car. Dealer lists filter on 30 K service for this car but I will wait to get more info before I proceed. I rather not break anything
  7. My 05 legacy 2.5I wagon is due for a fuel filter and things at subaru have definetly changed. The filter I got from the dealer is basicly a 2" round mesh plastic disk that suposedly fits to a riser in the fuel tank. Has anyone changed this filter and can tell me how it is done? The filter does not look like much and I wonder how good of a filtering job it will do. Maybe I can install an inline element filter to keep the fine stuff out. Any help would be appreciated.
  8. I saw the dexron III and dexron III (H) at the parts store but no dexron VI. Should I just use the dexron(H) or would the dexron VI be better for the transmission. I am planning to change the filter to make sure I get most of the factory fluid out. Note that the factory fluid does not look red like dexron and smells more oily. Not sure what it is?
  9. My 05 legacy 2.5 i (4 speed automatic) has almost 30 k miles and will need to change the transmission fluid and the differential oil. I read some time ago that subaru uses a semi-synthetic AT fluid but I have not been able to verify this information. I was at the dealer the other day for some warrantee issues and he claims that the AT fluid is the latest version of dexatron. Does anyone have any information on the correct AT fluid for this car? For the differential I am planning to use a synthetic gear oil any recommendations? Thanks for your replies in advance.
  10. Just got my 05 legacy home and wow this car is a big improvement over the old 92 legacy I used to have. The car is rather basic and I would like to buy the rubber cargo liner for the back and some crossbars for the roof rack. Anybody know of a good inexpensive source for these accessories? In addition this car uses 5W-30 oil which seems a bit light to me especially in Texas. Any oil recomendations for hot climates? Syntetics are quite expensive. Do I need a 5w oil or can I go with 10W-40? Thanks for the replies Regards Al
  11. Thanks for the offer on getting me the car fax for the 2005 wagon. The vin number is 4S3BP616257375333 the best way to reach me is at work al.ekelmans@airliquide.com Thanks for the help regards Al
  12. Ok I went to see the car and it is a base model with automatic as its only option. It is in good condition with only a few scratches and a small ding. Tires are bridgestone potenzas and well worn but even. Needs an oil change but runs good. No torque bind or anything. Please check the car fax for me the vin is 4S3BP616257375333. If this checks out I will probably buy this car. In addition I may want to buy the bars for the roof rack and a cargo bed liner anybody know a good source? Thanks for all of the members help and wisdom regards Al
  13. I have a chance to buy a 2005 legacy wagon with 30 K miles. It is fairly basic with automatic transmission, but the price is right. Are there specific things I need to test or look out for? What is the easiest way to check the AWD system is functioning properly. Thanks for the replies. Al
