I have a 2.2 1995 Legacy wagon getting very poor mileage and can smell fuel when it is running but witness no leaks. Changed the fuel filter a year ago and made sure that the hoseclamps were tight. No check engine light and currently only driving short stop and go trips. For the mass airflow, will the cleaner suffice (and what was the brand name) or should I get another? What is the IAC and how much? A friend mentioned it could be 02 sensors but wouldn't that cause a CEL? I am going to change the plugs and wires and fuel filter again but note that the car runs great currently other than this issue.

I bought my 95 legacy and it has these springs that hold the wiper blades down against the windshield. I have no idea what they are called or where to buy but try asking at the auto parts store. I use the cheapo winter blades and never have any problems. Rain-X also rules for applying to the windshield...my buddy drove his car 7 hrs in mostly rain when we went to a car show years ago and the wipers quit working. Apply the rain-x, do 70 miles an hour, and voila...who needs wipers....it made a believer out of me.

I just came home from work and it is -22 celsius outside. there is a warning light on as of today it is red with an exclamation point in brackets similar to this (!). I looked in my owners manual but it does not say what it is....any ideas thanks in advance.....maybe it means "too friggin cold!" I am still trying to warm up myself!!!

Well I went home last night after work and a friend helped me push the car in the garage and I it started right up and I ran it for a couple of minutes and revved it up...worked fine. This a.m. I started it and it died again instantly and would not restart........I don't get it. I never had a CEL last night when it was running. After sitting outside all day yesterday and starting, I think I can rule out a frozen fuel line. I thought last night that maybe it was something in the fuel line that worked its way through but then this morning I am back to the same problem. What to do next? I would think that the fuel pump is ok now too. Does this sound like a CTS problem? If it is not showing a CEL and I get it scoped, will it let me know the problem?

Awesome. A pic is worth a thousand words. I was just telling my coworker how great this site is. Maybe someday you guys can fix the car for me through virtual reality. If I can't get a CEL, and I have to start looking at these sensors and such, I assume I'll start with the least costly...how much for the CTS and for the regulator?

I can't see fuel line freezing either as it was in a heated garage, there is a lot of fuel in the car and it was running when I backed it out for a few minutes....plus the temp here is way milder than it was yesterday and no problems yesterday. I can't understand how a faulty fuel pump or frozen line would allow it to start again and again. I mentioned the low gas previous to my last fill up as I was thinking maybe sediment in the tank worked its way into the line and plugged? I am no mechanic and fix most of my own problems, mainly on older cars over the years that don't have sensors and electrical issues like these. I have replaced a fuel pump on a 92 Mazda 4x4 in the past which was in the tank, and from reading your posts am I to understand that replacing one in this car does not involve dropping the gas tank? There is an access plate? Reason I ask this is on the Mazda I cut a hole and made access to the pump for future access as it had a boxliner to cover everything after. Pretty good engineering on Subaru's part if there is access. After work I'll try starting it (the car is outside now so I am assuming if it does not start, it probably is frozen line), check for a CEL, and add some gas line antifreeze. If no luck then I'll change the fuel filter next. I'll let you know tomorrow how it goes. Thanks for all the help. Your advice is very much appreciated.

Temp was about -15C this am. the car has close to 3/4 tank in it and I wouldnt hear the pump over the car turning over, but the car started repeatedly...this makes me think the line can't have frozen. Plus if there is that much water in the fuel wouldn't the car run horrible, and it was -28 C yesterday and I had no issues?

I don't know a thing about electrical. The care has only 105,000 kms on it so I think the timing belt isn't too much overdue. I had no check engine light on last night or on initial start up this morning. After that I don't think the cel was on but the car only ran for an instant each time I started it. I don't understand how it would start up if the fuel pump (or if it is the timing belt) is shot but I briefly spoke with a machanic friend this morning and he said it is probably the pump. It is sitting outside now and I will try to start it again when I get home from work and see if the CEL comes on. The only other thing I can add is it was very low on fuel prior to my last fill up approx 4 days ago and I don't know when the last time the fuel filter was changed.

I tried this morning but don't even get a chance to hold the throttle..it starts then it dies immediately..also the timing belt is overdue I guess and mileage seemed to be getting worse prior to this. I initially started it and it ran for a couple of minutes this am but then when restarting it just starts then dies immediately and after starting about 3 times it just turned over and no start, then I left it for about ten minutes and it started up and died immediately both times. I was going to try to keep it running by holding the throttle down but it just dies too quickly.

This morning my 95 Legacy 2.2 AWD died in the driveway. I park in a heated garage, backed out, closed the door then got back in the car to back out and died. It will restart then die immediately. Tank is 3/4 full, never done this before or had any stalling issues other than cam sensor one year ago, and it seems like the fuel pump to me. Any ideas? This site has always been very helpful. Thanks in advance.

My 95 Legacy 2.2 is giving me a weird problem. The idle speed races up to almost 2000 rpm at start up and this morning when it came back down it almost stalled, then went back up to 1100 or so. If I give it throttle it would then race up a little and slowly come back down. After less than a minute or so it was at the normal 800 rpm or so. No CEL lights come on so it has me stumped and it does not do this every morning. Reminds me of a throttle cable sticking on my old Nova. You guys always seem to have the answers so I'd rather check here first. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I have a 95 Legacy wagon which pulls slightly to the left and sometimes the steering does not come back left properly after a right turn. I took it to the shop and they say the front strut upper bushings need to be replaced. They quoted approx $500.00 and I was thinking I could do this job myself and then take it in for an alignment. Does this sound like it is the problem? I have read other posts here that usually say the control arm bushings are the problem with similar symptoms. How much are these strut bushings worth and is it a big job (their quote says $66 each for the parts)? I have changed the entire strut in a Corolla in the past (without taking it apart to change the bushings). Any info or tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well we just had our first snowstorm of the year and this is my first Subaru. The doors were all frozen shut so I started it with the command start to let it warm up and was able to get them open. Can anyone recommend a product to lubricate the weatherstripping so this won't happen again? I've heard of using vaseline but also heard that this will dry them out eventually..plus it will make a greasy mess on the glass.
