  1. My Hubby loves his 1994 Sube Legacy 2.2 (with 220K!!) that when he found a 1993 Sube Legacy 2.2 (with 180K!!) for cheap (and from a southern state=no rust ) he just had to jump on it. But there is a hitch-- it was in the midst of having the water pump and timing belt changed when the owner decided to up and go back home to the south. Since the car was undriveable, he told his family up here to just sell it "as is, where is" because he didn't want to put more money into fixing it just to sell it. (I guess our "northern state climate" didn't agree with him ). So this long story shortened, DH is working on putting it back together and realizes it is "missing" a few parts. Like the gasket for the timing cover (half is there, other half is missing), and the bolt for the pulley on the front of the motor that (he believes) is for the crankshaft. So.... can you help us out, point us in the right direction for finding these parts at (preferrably) Autozone, or some other good parts store.:-\ Many thanks in advance....
  2. Well, have you ever driven an old truck or tractor that did not have ANY power to the steering??? *That's* what the Subie feels like. DH is getting sore neck and shoulders from driving the Subie.... It is almost dangerous because he cannot make "small corrects" or dodge potholes (or other things) because that kind of "gentle adjustment" just isn't there. ETA: forgot to add...Subie has 210K on it~~In case it matters to help diagnose...
  3. Hummmm.... Subie is a manual trans, so this might be the culprit. DH did replace the clutch about a year ago.... maybe he did something wrong in the R&R???
  4. Not dumb... I asked my DH the same thing when this first started happening. The fluid level is normal and has not changed. I will have to have him check if the pulley is actually spinning when the engine is idling...I didn't think to look at that. There has been no noise from under the hood during any of this. No squealing, grinding, whining.... nothing to suggest that the pump is failing. But I guess it could fail without any noises....:-\
  5. Hi~~ Hubby's 1994 Legacy Wagon AWD has been having power steering issues. It started with the power steering only working intermittently during turning. It would work driving straight then as you would start turning it would be as if manual, then 1/4 of the way thorough the turn, power steering would return. It was this way for both directions. Now it has become non-power steering for 100% of turning and steering during driving. This is from start up till you turn the car off. I did some searches here on the board, and cannot come up with a conclusive test or check that might help us decide if it is the power steering pump or the rack. Does anyone have any checks or tests that might help us figure out which one is the problem??? Thanks in Advance! The Cowgirl
  6. Thanks! Just to be sure, there are only 4 bolts that hold the engine to the trans, correct? That's all I could find.
  7. Hi, I need some suggestions. I am trying to replace the clutch in my '94 Legacy wagon 2.2L, and I've run into some snags. I have a Chilton on Subaru as a guide. I've gotten everything disconnected as far as I can tell, yet the trans is still hung up on something I've got about a 1" gap around the top, but it won't come loose. Only thing the Chilton said to do that I didn't do was to remove the release lever shaft. Says to screw a bolt into it to drive it out. Only problem with that is my car has nothing that looks like the drawings, nor does it seem to have a hole to thread a 6mm bolt into. Big questions I have are, for one thing, what about the drive shaft out of the trans? The book mentions nothing about what to do with that, but it seems the trans has to move back. Any help is appreciated, I'm pretty mechanical, but I've never done a clutch before. Thanks!
  8. Well, my DH finally got his Subaru Legacy on the road!!! It rides so nice and runs so well, he's nicknamed it his "Race Car"!!! He just better not take that nickname literally!!! We don't need to pay for higher car insurance!!! Once he got the new spring/strut conversion done, the brake job, new muffler, oil change and tune up was a piece of cake!!! Except he forgot to remove the plastic wrap off the end of the muffler at first and was wondering why it was running "funny"....*duh* .... I asked him (in the dark) what was that over the end of his tailpipe..."oops!" says he....oh boy.... I'm going to have to keep an eye on him... He's driven it 4 days now, and is so happy!! A big thank you to everyone who has helped us get his "Race Car" on the road!! :drunk:
  9. Bet you all thought I got lost, but nope--I was just waiting for DH to figure out how to get the drivers side rear rotor off!!! Well, after a week or two of pondering, mulling it over, and of course finally having the time, he dug into the project yesterday on his day off. I will cut to the chase and say that even with several PB Blaster soakings (as best as he could), and repositioning the improvised puller twice, it finally came off with a big *BANG!* of a noise!! He came to the conclusion that the parking brake was hanging up on it, and that is why it was so tough to "convince" it to come off....so a previous poster was right--It was the parking brake!!! So DH finished the spring/strut install and went on to R&R the muffler (which he needs a gasket for--part will be here Saturday), and he bought plugs and wires to do a tune up.... So a big thank you to all of you SubiePros and DH could not have done it without you!!! :drunk: Wish I could hand out real ones, but virtual ones will have to do....
  10. I'm going to try to find Deep Creep, Kroil, and Ed's but I believe I read on Kroil's site they only sell customer direct--no retail. We just got our tax refund check  so I might spring for some other stuff now!! Even that PB Blaster was almost $5 can at Murrary's Discount Auto! I don't know if I will be able to afford something more expensive; Considering how much rusted on stuff there is on this car so far!!!:-p :-p :-p BTW-- My DD seems to love the  guy...she keeps pointing to it and "cooing"....
  11. Well, DH says that it is the thin piece of metal backing plate that is rusted almost off. He's glad to hear its not critical to operations, and thinks he will just let it go. It looks to him as if that part is part of a bigger part. Just for curiousity, is it? Or is it replaceable without having to R & R a bigger part?? Tonight he's supposed to work on breaking loose the drivers side rotor...I will let you all know how he does.... ;)
  12. BTW, previous poster was right--PB Blaster has a very strong odor... DH had to change immediately after coming into the house for the night. I told him it was too strong to be wearing those clothes in the house for another minute!!! Even DD was sneezing!!! Too bad the PB Blaster didn't seem to aid in the rusted on rotor removal...prolly because he could not soak the area very well.... Still undecided on best stuff ... but definetly will try PB Blaster on next rusted stuck item....
  13. Hummmm.... .... dunno.... will have to ask him when he wakes up... he was happy he was able to unstick the one rotor last night, but was frustrated because the air compressor we have isn't very strong and takes forever to refill itself. I guess he spent most of the time waiting on it to refill so he could use his power tools!! He's thinking he's going to splurge and buy a new compressor (bigger/better) instead of upgrading his cell phone... Will let you know what he says....
  14. Well, he got the passenger side rotor off!! He bought a 3 prong puller, just in case, and ended up having to use it to remove the rotor. He ground three notches into the hub part of the rotor, and he says when it finally let loose, it let loose with a big *BAM* noise!!! It was really stuck!!! The backing plate is toast though; Rusted so bad its going to come off on soon. DH isn't sure he wants to tackle that repair at the moment. What you do guys think?? Is that a PITA repair, easier than he thinks it is, or not necessary to do it at all??
  15. Well, I bought him the PB Blaster, and this morning he soaked it before he left for work. It's been sitting all day. So we just finished dinner and he got all bundled up to brave the cold garage to see if he can get the rotors off. I will let yu know how he does.....
  16. With all of the rusted on parts DH has been dealing with, I've been wondering, what is everyone's favorite lubricant to use to help break loose rusted on stuff? And please also post your opinion on stuff that doesn't work.... I've learned WD-40 is good for bicycle chains, but not for heavy duty rusted on car parts.... :D
  17. Great picture AndyJo!! nickb21, I will have to ask him if he might have tried that already...I don't know if he will be up to working on car tonight since he won't be home till after 9pm. I will have to post again and let you all know what he says. Poor dude has to wear long john and layers to work in the cold. Even with torpedo heater blasting, he still gets frozen working out there. I'm hoping it will warm up soon...even up to 30 degree F would be warm right now!!!
  18. Yup, he got the caliper off. There is a section of disc, but it isn't much. Tapping, heat, applied WD-40 (I know, not the greatest stuff..).....He says he heated it up enough to get the axle grease to smoke (can he get it that hot?? are the wheel bearings maintence-able or are they factory sealed??? I'm smelling trouble ahead maybe....) I might have to actually venture into the lair to help him with this part of the project.......:-\ :-\
  19. Hummmm...good point....I guess I will go yell at him and ask...wouldn't that be a "DOH!" moment for him.... ETA: Okay, he says parking brake not on. Rotors rusted on, he has heated them several times, but they won't budge. There is a backing plate that only has a small section to allow access to backside of rotor. There are not holes to put in bolts to be able to grab it with bolts and press it off. Any ideas guys????
  20. DH is getting sooooo frustrated!!! First the wheels were rusted on so tightly that it took driving with 2 loose lug nuts to break them free. And even then, the one rear needed heating up and a sledge hammer to finish the job!! Now he cannot remove the rear brakes!! I believe this 1994 Legacy has rotors and calipers on all four (correct me if I am wrong, since I have not dared venture into the lair of the garage during this project). He has done all the usual things to remove rusted on stuff--ANY suggestions or experience in dealing with this issue, PLEASE POST!!!!! Thanks in Advance!! The Cowgirl:)
  21. Gotta say, you all rock!!! DH did whatever he needed to do with the swaybar, and he's gotten the fronts on!!! I will let you know how he does with the rears.....(also please see my next post on rear brake removal:-\ )
  22. Ahhhhh....Light dawns on darkened head.....okay.....DH just read this thread, and just went back out to garage.... As far as I know, he has assembled at least one strut and spring assembly...I don't know if he has tried to put any of the other three together. I do know, he had to figure out front from rear and left/right on everything--that alone was a PITA!!!
  23. Okay, I hate to sound like a newbie, and since I have not gone into the garage since DH started this project, I have NO idea what is what...so please give me a walk through....what upright dropping down?? what endlink to the swaybar?? DH says the strut is too long/tall by 4-6 inches. He cannot figure anyway to "make" it fit. Parts guy says it is the correct part. DH says he's hating this project more and more....I'm thinking he missed a step, or someone is wrong in the parts department.....
  24. Thanks for the super links!!!! I still am wondering if either DH is doing something wrong or that he has the wrong parts.:-\ .. he says that the spring/strut assembly (where the shock/strut is located inside the spring) is too tall/doesn't fit.. ... btw, he did not compress the spring to install on car,--he does not think that should be necessary to install. He bought them unassembled, and put them together himself. Does anyone know offhand how many inches the shock/strut is supposed to be for a 1994 Legacy??? That would help alot to solve this mystery too....
