  1. 1.)Not getting a spark, the coil and the disty are new and check out as good but I noticed it was not getting a spark. Plug wires are less than six months old. Like I said on the Primary side of the coil I have a wire from the starter and then a wire to the distributor and then a third wire that leads to what looks like a resistor or something (could this be causing the problem), I checked continuity from the starter to the primary side of the coil and the meter said I had continuity maybe not the best test but I wanted to see if there was a short between the starter and the coil. 2.)Air filter and the exhaust is new 3.)Changed both fuel filters already, How do I check the fuel pump? What I did notice was when I pushed the pedal no fuel was shooting into the carb either 4.)No timing belt, thank God, but the ignition timing was good before it died.
  2. The EA71 84 dl that I have died as I was driving it for no reason now all it does is turn over. It is like it is not get fire or fuel one. I already had a new ND distributor installed just replaced the coil and still just turns. I know the coil is good. any idea what this is, there is a wire on the primary + side that goes to waht looks like a resistor. and then grounds to the engine. What is this part? Could this keep it from sending fire? I have checked the fuses and fusible links all look good. What else in the ignition system can cause it not to get fire that I could check. BTW if the ECM dies will it cause the car not to start? although I do not think it is the ECM. Would not know how to troubleshoot it anyway. Hope someone has an answer before I turn this back over to the Subaru gods and let it just rust away Thanks Robert
  3. On the 84 dl 2dr the window seal between the front and rear windows is shot. Any one have any idea of where I can find replacement rubber. Perhaps a glass shop may be able to help with this. I went to the dealer and all they had was a right side replacement, parts for this car are all going obsolete. and 80 bucks is just a little bit too steep for a window seal. Thanks
  4. I am trying to find replacement sway bar bushings for the 84 2wd DL, everywhere I have gone to look including the internet they list the bushings for the 4wd. I am not sure if the 4wd drive are the right diameter. I measured the sway bar and it is 19mm(3/4 inch). Any ideas or subaru part numbers that someone may have to help me find new bushings. the 20 year old rubber has go to go. Thanks.
  5. Would anyone have a slant console they would be willing to part with? I sure would like to get the radio to fit better than the way the previous owner rigged in there. Thanks
  6. I was just pondering how difficult it would be to convert the 2dr 84 dl into a subavertible . I think it would make a sharp ragtop. Any body have any ideas on where to start?
  7. Thanks for all the ideas. Yes, I have a ND coil and ND distributor (new), I will check the magnet gap. and pick up a multimeter tonight and check it all out. I am starting to lean toward bad new part (not the first time this thing has happened, unfotunately this is not something they could test before I left the store)
  8. As far as coil goes it was good before I started the job (could something in the new one caused it to not work anymore?) I did disconnect the batterry before I started the whole job. and my connections are tight on the coil. The reason I had to change the distributor out was the vacuum advance was bad and nobody would sell me just the part so i bought the whole unit. and the cap and rotor was replaced a month ago and they both have little wear. now as far as a spark test you say ground the coil wire on the distributor end and see if it causes a spark? We tried testing the plug wires. I know I am at TDC now. I will check resistance on the coil though and who knows maybe it died too. Thanks for the help
  9. I wish I had had spark. I set the rotor button to TDC on the flywheel and pulled the distributor, put the new one in and do not have spark fire or anything from the distributor
  10. I just replaced my distributor, followed the instructions to a "T" and now I am not getting any fire. Any ideas on what to do next? I have a ND distributor BTW. Also this is a new distributor I replaced it with Thanks in advance
  11. yes it is in my 84 DL, in fact I posted it in the old-gen forum to begin with but it was moved here the next day. I hoped somebody in the old forum would have saw this and answered it before it moved though.

  13. my EA71 is about to bite the dust if I go with the EA81 from CCR will all the old intakes bolt up to it? I was told the trany will bolt up but they were not sure about the intake and exhaust. If not I guess I will buy anaother EA71 from them.

  15. I am thinking about putting a tach on the old DL, any pointers from those who have done such a task. What all is involved with installing one anyway? Thanks
  16. I was redoing the vac hoses and the ASV solenoid that is right in front of a check valve broke. currently the I have the vacuum plugged and the solenoid just open to the air. Are their any other types of solenoids that will work other than the exact solenoid on the 84 dl 1.6l engine? Dealer wants $110.00 for a new one and have not found one in the junkyard. Is this part really necessary?
  17. I have heard that cleaning the engine internals of carbon deposits can be accomplished with kerosene in engine and ATF down the carb throat. let it run to operating temp for awhile and then replace the oil and filter. This makes me wonder would it have any affect on the seals of this 20 year old engine. Or can someone suggest a better way to clean the engine internals.
  18. I have faith that it won't but I just bought it with 231,000 miles (Iknow it is still a baby). but I would like to have one that is rebuilt and ready when this one is ready for a break. Twenty + year old parts seem harder to come by. I owned a dl just like this one five years ago but the body died on it. Five years ago I could have found anything for it but now I am coming up empty on a lot of older parts.
  19. I have a 1984 DL 1.6l 5spd Subaru w/o turbo and ps. love the car and want start restoring it. This is my first project of this nature. One of the things I would like to know is what engines will bolt to this tranny? Since the 1.6's seem to be hard to come by and I would like to have an engine on the side ready to go in when this one fails:grin:
