Help, I have a 97 impreza obs. lately everything seems to be giving me problems. 1- the rear wiper stops where you turn it off, not in the original position where it starts. 2- the power locks work everywhere but the rear hatch, it has to be locked manually. 3- back up lights rarely work, which is dangerous trying to back up. 4- spedometer/ odometer stopped working. 5- last but not least this week after getting gas at a local sheetz it sputtered a few times. then while driving i noticed that @ 4500 rpm it sputtered really bad and the car shook, refusing to go any faster, forcing me to upshift. I have tested this in every gear with the same results of the car sputtering badly whenever reaching 4500 rpm. the fuel filter, spark plug and wires have been replaced less than a year ago, along with a aftermarket green (k&n type) air filter 2 weeks ago before i went on a trip to Connecticut. only had sputtering and spedometer probs after i got back. any help with this problem would be appreciated. I have scheduled to take it to a subaru garage soon if i cant take care of this myself first.

I have to agree that the bf goodrich traction t/a tires are excellent. I own a 97 impreza outback sport s/w and love the tires. I recommended them to my mother who has a 96 legacy outback s/w and she loves the traction t/a also. We bought ours at the tirerack for around $65 a tire. If you can, buy these tires!!! The grip is excellent and the treadlife on these are either 65-70K miles depending on peformance rating....

Just wanted to clarify my post. the car was a 98 not a 97. That being said, what is a good price to pay for a 98 5 speed legacy gt wagon?

Yes, the ticking sound is still there when the car is in neutral. I had the clutch, pressure plate, and throughout bearing replaced by subaru dealer approx. 11 months ago. When I contacted him today he stated it was pointless to have it looked at and to just wait until my gears start going out so I can replace the whole transmission. This being said, if this is the problem then is there any better transmissions to get for the ob sport? Would one from a wrx fit?

Just wanted to tell everyone how stupid I was the other day. I have a friend who is a car dealer and he found a green 5 speed, 97 legacy gt s/w at the auction. He got a great deal on it because the millage stated 212000 km and the auction thought it had 212000 miles. Ha Ha. Anyway, the car was loaded except no leather and looked almost like new. He offered it to me first for $3,700 and instead of jumping to buy it I dragged my feet and he sold it to another friend of his. Anyway, i told him to be on the lookout and if he found another great deal like that I would buy it in a heartbeat.

I just wanted to say that i found out that if i have the car in neutral (with the engine warmed up) the ticking sound is still very noticable, but if I push down on the clutch the sound mysterously dissappears! I dont know if this will mean anything but your suggestions are appreciated. thanks again...

I own a 97 impreza obs with 154k miles. about 1 week ago i noticed upon starting the car there was a knocking/tapping sound that continues while in 1st and 2nd gear, but seems to go away when i go to 3rd gear. I just had the oil changed (valvoline maxlife) couple of weeks ago and oil is fine. Car has new seals all around along with newer (1 year old) water pump and timing belt and coolant (subaru fluid) flush, ngk irridium plugs, wires, clutch, pressure plate & throwout bearing. I was planing on taking it to Bortz Subaru in Waynesburg PA. to have checked out. They only charge $15-20 to look over vehicle for problems. Seems like a good deal & they have been honest and fair in the past. any ideas or suggestions? Do I need to worry? $$$$ Any help would be appreciated. I am hoping this is a typical engine problem that subarus get with time. Hopefully if its nothing major, there might be something out there to quiet the sound down. thanks...... I own a 97 impreza obs & had taken it to a local dealer for a/c servicing several times before it worked properly. right after it was fixed and even now, I am having a strange problem. the a/c works fine while the car is moving but, if stuck in traffic or sitting parked with the a/c on, the temp gauge goes up and it blows hot air out of the vents. if u start moving the temp goes down & the air will blow cold again. I am puzzled and would appreciate any advise or suggestions in this matter. thanks

i own a 97 impreza ob sport with approx. 144k miles. lately in the cold weather while driving the engine seems to sputter or hesitate for a few seconds like i'm not getting fuel through my system. i was thinking it was maybe water in my gas? i have used winter fuel system cleaner and dry gas on several occasions but the problem is that it only hesitates on sporatic occasions. i have fairly new plugs, wires, ait filter and would like some fresh opinions. thanks...

Hey everyone, I own a 97 impreza o/b sport. Today I attempted to wash the dirt off my windshield with no results. I have fluid that will go to the rear but I dont even hear the front pump. My question is, what is involved with replacing the washer pump and how much time does it take. I most likely will buy the part from NAPA or Advanced Auto Parts to save money unless the Subaru part is comparible in price. thanks, allen

Hey, I have a 97 impreza outback sport. The bulb that lights the air vent controls on the dash went out and i was wondering how difficult it was to replace the bulb, or if anyone had done this before. Thanks, allen

I just installed NGK iridium plugs and premium wires from NAPA. they seem to work fine.

Hey everyone I am a Deputy Sheriff with the Monongalia County Sheriff Dept. in Morgantown WV. Less than 6 months ago I bought a 97 impreza outback sport and I LOVE IT!!! I have been thinking lately about what a great police cruiser a legacy would make, if it only had more HP and was a little larger. Now here is a couple questions. Does anyone know if the next generation legacy will have these desireable features, and has anyone heard of police departments (US or otherwise) using subaru's in their fleet. I own a 97 impreza outback sport. I have new speakers that need to be installed in the front doors but I am not sure how to go about taking off the inside door panel to get to the speakers. I managed to pull out the clips from the middle of the door down but met resistance toward the upper part of the door. The area I unclipped was not large enough to fit a screwdriver through. I do not want to damage the door or the power windows and locks. If anyone could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it. thanks, allen............

Hey, I was thinking of putting a wing on my 98 impreza outback sport and could not find any. I was wondering if anyone out there knew of an aftermarket wing , (spoiler), that was compatible or had one themselves that worked well. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Also, does anyone know if a front bumper from a 2.5 RS would fit on my vehicle? I think it would make the ob sport look more aggressive. thanks, allen
