  1. How much for front and rear tube bumpers for ea82... picked up?
  2. Yeah I was wanting to swap out the alternator from my ea71 into it, since the ea71 has a bad rod knock. But if that won't work, then that won't work. I still might get it though... if he still has it tomorrow morning, i'll be there to get it. Thanks for the help guys!
  3. Hi! I found a good deal on a 1984 hatchback, and the owner says it just needs the voltage regulator. I believe that most of these are built in to the alternator. My question is, whether or not it is the same on my 1980 ea71 motor. If so, I will go get this car today, swap out the alternator, and drive it home. Any info would be great. Thanks guys!
  4. Yes this does help a bit.. the reason i am wondering is because I have a 1980 ea71 wagon that runs good, but it has a rod knock.. and will not pass emissions. I found a 76 wagon on CL that just needs the carb rebuilt or swapped out. As far as I can tell, the carb on my 80 wagon is in good working order. So I shall ask what kind of carb is on his car and I will plan accordingly. Thanks for the info!
  5. Does anyone know if the carb from a late model (1980) ea71 will work on an earlier (1976) ea71? It seems like it should work, but I need some expert advice before I get in over my head. Thanks in advance!!!
  6. So i am kind of thinking (hoping really) that the noise previously thought to be rod knock is actually the distributor. I pulled the cap off and it's super sloppy. the rotor practically fell off when i touched it. I put an ea81 rotor on there and it fits a LOT more snug and works fine to boot. But there is about a half-inch of play when you turn the rotor either way. Now to find a good ea81 disty and coil...
  7. I do have a spare ea81 sitting in the back of my other sube that I could rebuild... I just don't trust myself to do that kind of a job. I actually just asked a buddy of mine to ask his co-worker how much he'd charge me to rebuild it and put a bigger cam in, so I'm waiting for word on that. Which leads me to the question, will the tranny in the ea71 bolt up to an ea81 motor? The PO did a clutch on this car not too long ago and i can't imagine it needs replacing.
  8. Good luck repairing the heater core... Easiest way to do it is to cut out the side. Not worth the work to pull the whole dash. there is a write up in the USRM.
  9. I would check out the fuel filters. I had a similar problem but it was mainly when i went up hills. HTH.
  10. Wow!!! I have been having problems lately with what sounds like rod knock at about 2500-3000 rpms and I just read this thread and decided to check out my distributor. Pulled the cap off and the rotor has about a 1/2" of play either way!!! You say the U-pull in damascus has nippondensos? I must go get one.
  11. I stand retarded. I am, after all, the one who bought a car with rod knock.
  12. Okay this really threw me off too. SO there is the GL-10 turbo'ed EA series car. The GL-5 is a 1600cc 5speed Subaru GL wagon. So, I have determined that this was made before there were any turbo'd subes. When I first heard about the GL-5 I was like "WTF?! A Turbo'd 1600?!?!" But it's NA.
  13. Any takers? Make an offer? Maybe a good parts car. Doors and rockers have a little rust. Doors are the worst part. Has good chrome bumpers, brown/tan interior, factory subaru alloy wheels and located in Portlandish, OR. Sorry about the cell phone pics, I don't have a digicam.
  14. I'm not very attached to it yet. I just bought it about 3 weeks ago. I think i might just drive it till it stops. Unless someone wants to buy it as is. But i really doubt i'd get more than half what i paid which was $500. I am, however kind of attached to my 83 gl. But i broke a bolt trying to swap an axle the hard way. So that's on hold till i find my easy-out.
  15. Finally got around to having my mechanic friend's co-worker help with the car and he says the sound i'm hearing is not valve lash. Neigh, it is rod knock. But we re-sealed the oilpump and added a little lucas oil stabilizer and it is definately less noisy. but at about 3000 rpms it still knocks. Why does this happen to a car that has only 102k original miles? It's a 1980 which is older than me, but still. Could this be due to a PO not changing the oil? I have read (on this message board, come to think) that oil can become acidic when it gets too old. From the looks of the car, I think it did sit for a period of a few years. Any advice from the masters of all things sube?
  16. SO, I guess i'll swap out the sending unit to see if that does anything. i hope it does. and i hope these valves just need to be adjusted. If this doesn't fix it, where can I get a pump? i've been looking around on the internet to no avail.
  17. My buddy's co-worker was a subaru tech back in the early 90's and worked on these cars a ton. he ordered me an oil pump re-seal kit. he said that the ea71's came in with this problem a lot and 99% of the time resealing the pump fixed the problem. so that will be my next step. thanks for all the good info though!!!
  18. would a pressure sensor from an ea81 oil pump work on an ea71? i have an extra ea81 sitting in my shed that i could swap the sensor from if it'll even work. i can imagine that they read differently since the displacement is different. thanks again for all the feed back.
  19. I'm just going by the stock guage in the cluster. so if my oil pump is going out and they are hard to come by, what would you suggest?
  20. at 2000 rpms its about 2 or 3 psi when its warm. cold, it reads at about 35 or so. So i'm not really in danger of ruining anything if i continue to drive it? i bought this car to drive while i fix my other one and i gotta get to work somehow!! Thanks for all the help!!!
  21. So I just bought this 1980 GL-5 1600cc wagon with 102,xxx miles on it and it has a few issues. First of all, the car is not leaking oil much if at all. When I start it cold the oil pressure goes up to about 34 psi. And the engine sounds, well like a cold engine but I can rev it up and it sounds fine. Once the engine reaches operating temp the oil pressure drops to almost nothing and it sounds like the valves are clicketty clacking away. Is this a common thing? Could it be that my oil pump just stops working once it heats up? Am I going to sieze my engine if I drive it? Any info would be appreciated.
  22. I was just wondering if there are any especially good junkards around here that have a lot of ea81/82 subarus. If anyone knows of any really good ones, post em on up!!! thanks!!!
  23. Well I think your expert advices have fixed my problem. Thank you so much guys! This is the best Subaru forum I've ever found. Thanks again! -Jake
