  1. Could someone verify which one I need for a 1988 GL Coupe?

Ok, finally got the right axle for my non-turbo and got it installed. Beautiful! No shaking or noises and I won't have to worry about that axle for a loooong time.

GCK is definitely the way to go, just make sure you order the right one. :-\

  2. It's a GL coupe, 1.8 EFI.

is yours EA81 or EA82? is your GL a hatch or a wagon? i think the hatch will be EA81 and wagon EA82.

can't help you on the boots, i order new axles from MWE (their information is on here, in the vendors forum probably). i hate working on axles, not worth my time. and i won't install any parts store axles, they suck.

  3. Where do you guys get your parts for axle or boot replacement? I'm finding it very hard to locate the proper parts, even the local Subaru dealership said they would have to order a boot for my 88 GL. The local NAPA store says they have one for a 1988 1800, would that work?

Also, can someone give me the dimensions for the special tool (washer?) that is needed to reinstall the axle in the steering knuckle? I'd rather make one than have to purchase one if possible.

    Thanks

  4. Ok guys, what's the deal with having to replace the crush washer on the oil pan plug each time you change the oil? My local parts places don't have'em so I had to reuse the old one which leaks of course. Aren't there some sort of fibre washers that can be reused? Also, how do you keep from getting oil all over the skid plate when you drain the pan, do you need to remove it first? What do you do? Thanks

  5. Gonna do a timing belt job on my 88 GL Coupe (driver's side broke) and have ordered the kit on e-bay that includes the tensioners. I'm going to replace the waterpump while I'm in there also. What else should I do while I've got everything out of the way? I've got one oil leak I'm going to address on the front passenger's side which I believe is the valve cover gasket.

  6. Thanks for the help and advice. I did buy the car, believe it or not it only has 69k miles on it and is in very good shape. Couple of rust spots that should be easy to fix, one power window switch needs replacing and some stains on passenger seat need cleaning, everything else seems to work fine, including the a/c. About 3k miles ago previous owner had CV joints replaced , new tires and alternator, a/c and alternator belts. 1.8l engine is not very fast but should get good gas mileage which is what I need in a commuter. Would like to find an owner's manual if possible.

Here's a couple of pics of the new ride. Picked it up over the weekend and have driven about 200 mi., so far so good.
