  1. also remember to check your electrical ignition system. disty, pick-ups, coil, wires, plugs, get a timing light and check for spark, if it's running there is spark duh, check for spark specifically when not running or after it dies. could be some kinda freaky electrical irregularity.
  2. yes, check accelorator pump, (look inside carb while pumping to look for fuel spray or drops, if present fuel delivery is good) like stated earlier it could be the fuel pump, or crap inside the tank blocking delivery even to the fuel filter although this does seem unlikely as it has never happened to me.
  3. also from what I understand if you put a drive gear from a ea82 on a ea81 some drilling is required as there is no shearpin hole for the gear on a ea82 disty. correct?
  4. intermittent no-spark from my experience has usually been trouble shot down to the pick-up. I just had this problem not too long ago. It was the pick-up for me, also called the ignition module, it is usualy under the disty cap and it picks up a pulse from the reluctor. You may want to check into that good luck boys!!
  5. you are a boss. can I get all the neccessary parts from you to do this spfi conversion? can you work me up an inventory price. I am east coast (roanoke va) and I would consider doing this swap if reasonable. I personally LOVE FI. This is not NEEDED, but dang, it would be cool and a neat experience. You seem like a wealth of knowledge
  6. In that case, can I get a full distributor with all the guts? I need the hitachi one with the ninja star lookin reluctor, not the square one. set me a price brotha
  7. Ok guys, who knows how to remove a reluctor on the ea81. I believe it prys right off but I don't want to hurt anything especially the distributor. These parts are getting hard to find now. I found a distributor pick up for around 80$ and to replace the pick up the reluctor removal is neccessary. so any advice would be nice........also there seems to be a pin going down from top of reluctor.........what is that pins purpose? will it shear when reluctor is removed? or do I need to get a new one to reinstall the same old reluctor?
  8. ok, a subaru that starts cold runs good, then looses spark after reaching running temperature. After a rough run through I have determined the problem to be the reluctor pick-up inside the distributor. This problem was tricky to diagnose as the car started well by the time you purchased and installed any new part. so if anyone ever has this issue check out the distributor pickups or modulators inside a distributor. This particular vehicle 1984 ea81. peace gang:burnout:
  9. ok so I have a 1984 ea81 and it shuts off at idle or when driving while running after warmed up good. when cold it starts right up. first I believed it was a fuel problem. but checked that out and discovered real problem is lack of spark. with that being said, I have trouble shot it down to the reluctor and pickup inside the distributor. I am picking one up tomorrow to get the final answer but, I feel confident this IS the problem. Has anyone ever heard of such a problem before? a heat related lack of spark? It has got to be the pick up and not the coil. I tried both old coil and new coil, and same problem arises. I will let you guys know asap after I try the distributor pick-up/reluctor.
  10. yes I believe I am going to try this weber out. He put one his soob and he was able to eliminate tons of vacum line clutter. That is a nice aspect. I would like to keep the motor workings as simple as possible, less is more baby
  11. ok, I have had time to look at this 84 wagon. automatic with hitachi carb. I am wondering what carb is best on this beast? from what I can see it has a liquid cooled intake manifold. Is it best to stick with the stock hitachi? It seems overcrowded with vacuum hoses etc....also since it's being an automatic currently do I have to consider anything special if I do decide a new different carb is in order for the ride? fyi a friend has a water choked weber he wants me to put on it, but he asked for me to check on here if the auto tranny will affect it's functionality on this vehicle (aka vacuum issues or kickdown problems.) I prefer simplicity and efficiency. I don't need power as much as reliability. What do you guys think?
  12. HAHAHAHHAHA! I am beginning to see that without a picture the forum readers get disappointed, I don't blame ya though here is a pic It will look a lot better once I paint it. Nothing fancy, I am all about functionality.
  13. Thanks guys, I was able to acquire a set of universal gutter racks. With a little work these came out looking good and functional cheers!
  14. I am looking for a good set of roof racks that would go on a 1984 subaru gl wagon. Anyone have any for sale? either after market or stock? thanks guys
  15. Thanks guys for all the warm responses Here are some pictures
  16. Hey buddy, this sounds like we should keep in touch! I am in no hurry to do things but I do like to keep our doors open I am willing to work with you on things if you are willing also. Tell me the specifics on your tranny etc...miles, any probs? I would also like your advice on the tranny swap. The auto has push button 4wd switch on the automatic lever so that may be a stick in the spokes. what do you think? someone also mentioned that the pedal install is difficult and that the driveshaft lengths could be different. I am willing to invest money into this project if the numbers are right.
  17. I just purchased a nice 84 soob gl wagon. I really dig it. I used to own a brat and now I have this one. pros: only 140,000 miles 4x4 a/c option 1 owner (older lady) cons: minor cosmetic rust, expected of course automatic oil leaks (probably valve cover heads?) I am not looking for a super fast ride but here are two things I'd like to mull over.........eventually making it a manual tranny, and also fixing rust spots particularly around frame/structural parts. any advice from you a fellow soobhead would be only appreciated
