  1. Dear Snowman, When I am driving the guage shows 8 volts. After a few weeks the car will not start and I have to charger the battery up. Thanks, abcus
  2. The alternator tested at 28 volts. I have charge to battery up every couple of weeks. It does not boil. Maybe the tester made a mistake. The car is a 1986 Subaru wagon. Thanks, abcus
  3. Thanks for the tips. I did not know about the litmus paper test. Thanks, abcus
  4. I can buy a 1988 turbo 4wheel drive automatic wagon for 500 dollars. It needs a new power steering pump. I have never had a turbo before. What should I look for when I test drive it ? He says he put a new timing belt on it, but I would think there would be two belts. He claims it only has one belt. Is that true? Did this model have any weak points ? Thanks, abcus
  5. Thanks all for the help. He replaced the engine seal. He machined the flywheel. He replaced the pressure plate.I do not know if the pressure plate he put in was rebuilt or new. I read the fine print in the warranty and in says under no circumstances will slippage be covered by the warranty. The job was bid at $395 and cost $650 by the time he got thru with me.If the pressure plate was a bad rebuilt one maybe I could argue about that. He claimed that the clutch for a 1800 cc engine cost more than a 1600 by $100. Is there any difference in the clutch between those two engines? I called a parts house and they said no. Is there any way I can find out if the pressure plate is defective without opening the bell housing again? Thanks again, Abcus
  6. I had a new clutch installed on my 86 gl. It slips going up steep hills.I brought to my mechanic . He adjusted it. It still slips. He said I burned up the clutch. It has 500 miles on it. One thing I did was to disconnect the hill holder.I did not ride the clutch. Could a Subaru clutch glaze over in 500 mile even if I rode it all the time? Could the pressure plate be rebuilt and be defective. It sounds like he is going to try to get out of fixing it. The reason i got the new clutch was that the old one was slipping. Any ideas on this one? Thanks, Abcus
  7. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it. I did get a compressions check done. Three cyclinders were within 1 lb. of 153 and the one closest to the head lite on the passenger side was 109. This was a dry check. i have not done a wet one yet.A guy I talked to today said the low cylinder could be from bad valve guides. But I would think if the valves were making a good seat the guides are outside the chamber and out of the picture. Maybe worn guides affect the angle of the seat? The engine sounds fairly decent to my ear. When you adjust the clutch can you adjust how tight it rides against the flywheel? Maybe the adjusting is just to allows it to slip into and out of gear more easily. I would appreciate any comments from you pros. Thanks, abcus
  8. Dear folks, I bought an 86 wagon at a police auction. It has air going in and out of the tube where you put oil in. Also when you hold a piece of cereal box cardboard against the tail pipe it goes plop, plop, plop. Are my intake and exhaust valves bad? It needs a clutch ,and if the the engine is bad I probably won't go any furher with the car. How long would it take someone who has not worked on Subarus before to do a clutch replacement? It has 199,950 miles on it. Thanks, abcus
  9. Dear EXe3, Thanks for replying. I got a message from the website saying I had to visit the website for some reason. I have driven an 85 Subaru with a clunking cv joint for awhile out of necessity. I found it did better a certain speeds than at other speeds. Thanks, abcus
  10. I bought it for better or worse. The mechanic starts in on it Thursday. It definately makes abig jolt when you drive ahead 4 feet in a straight direction. It is a little better in 4 wheel drive. Thanks to all, abcus
  11. Can a bad right drive axle tear up the housing on a trans ? This one sounds really bad. Thanks, abcus P S It is an automatic 4wheel drive
  12. I may be asking an old question . I am a new poster. I have an 82 wagon 2 wheel drive . I want to put that engine and clutch and transmission in an 86 gl 4wheel drive . It is 15 degrees below zero now and the 82 is frozen into the ground. Does it have a univerasal on the rear of the transmission? Thanks, abcus@frontiernet.net
