  1. it's an '85 GL Hatch, ea81.

2 fuel filters to replace. one under the car, by the fuel pump, the other is the vapor seperator in the engine compartment. The one under the car is the most neglected (forgotten) one. I had a wagon with 145k on it, and an original undercoat covered fuel filtered still on it....

anyway, be sure both are replaced, and dump a can of SeaFoam in the fuel tank to help clean up the carb/lines. the filter under the car should catch all. there won't be any in-tank filters, etc....

there should be a drain bolt in the bottom of the tank. drain the fuel/loose crud out of it , and rinse with some clean gas to make sure the loose stuff is out.....

Thanks! Thats the info i was looking for!

Seafoam? Heard of it....but not for gas tanks..

  2. So today i replaced the coil and the wires, this cleared all my misfire codes.

Go to start it up and does exactly the same thing wont idle and throtle is very unresponsive like when you let go it revs.

So we disassembled the whole intake up to the throtle body and my brother says, hEY LEts start it for ************s and giggles.

So when we start it up it runs perfectly and respends to throttle very good at idle however as soon as we hook up the m.a.f it shuts right down and goes back to its original symptoms....

    What Gives?

  3. Get used to it, it's a common problem with Subarus, it's because of the overlap of the generations(ea81,ea82). Best bet is to get on Napa or other parts stores website and look up the part yourself, then call them with the part number, they love that!

Thanks, usually they should make it easy for me, but i got to make it easy for them....what a world.

  4. Wow, so by the time i went to 20 stores to find a fuel filter NO ONE had one, SO buy the time, it was too late and got nothing done, I phoned to NAPA 20 mins away, they saud they had it, went to get it AND IT WAS THE WRONG ONE, WHY DO THEY HIRE INCOMPETENT EMPLOYEES WHO GIVE THE WRONG INFO! not happy to say the least, i guess anther day, another battle

  5. Well... the Fuel Filter in Loyales is just One, and is Located Down, Under the Car, Behind the Electric Fuel Pump and Nearby the Tank & Passenger`s Rear Wheel...

if you Check the Tank & Fuel Lines and then everythin` seems to be Fine, your Subie Might have a Carburetor Failure... My 1985 EA82 had the SAME Behaviour than yours with the Aged Craptachi Carb... Then I Swaped There a Weber and the Subie Runs Great! ... Plus more Powerful, Loud and Simplier! :brow:

    Good Luck!

I think id like to source weber carb aswell, is it easy to do, say a one day job? how much? where to buy?

  6. Wow it sounds like this is my problem.

So where do i go from here, i know first thing first is replace fuel filter.

Then where are these other filters yiu speak of? Is this fuel tank easy to acces say like my 94 T leg, right in the trunk lift it out and inspect? Could my pump be bad aswell? what is this going to cost me? Are these repairs easy? Is there a diagram laying around to help me?

Thanks for the help, i think you hit the nail on the head and may save me car.

  7. Okay well, First things first.

Car was stranded about a month ago 20 minutes from my house, it would not idle ran like crap and felt like you were driving a rolling brick. Then it still wouldnt move anywhere but would idle alot better....after fixing a massive vacumm leak.

Come up a couple of days later to get down to the problem.

    Car turns right on.....

    Heats up.....

And im just driving like a mad man for about 10 minutes, Car was running great!

then i get on the highway, Its chugging like a Train, Using the throttle becomes and artform.

I needed gas so i thought id be nice and give the girl some premium (OCT 91)

The car drives absolutly fantastic for about a month and a half but slightly lean/ hesitates past 110 km/h i continue to put 91 in.

Then bang Car is chuggiiiinnnng Horribly, like sometimes it wont get past 10km/h. If your really hard on it which i hate doing you can get it to 50km/h but its painful and dosent solve my problem.

I came to the conclusion it was timing, concinved myself it just has to be.

SO i timed the car using detailed instructions. Seems fine for about 5 minutes, then there it is again. That not the worst thing, it stalls, floods and just dosent run worth a ************.

But.... The car idles like a top! Deap 1000 rpms with a slight rpm twitter ( ice had this twitter since getting the car when it ran great replaced the Disty with a new one since then)

It does have a very bad exhaust leak and chopped exhaust...Dont think that will change anything other than a little bit of choppyness.

Okay conclusion, Car fires right up in the morning, idles good will occasionly die weirdly when its not even that cold, i can watch the car die and then start itslef for like 30 seconds, stalls with clutch in coming to a stop. Cuts out like a mofo, wont go past 20km/h

Is this timing or a Failed carb, i need an answer quick please guys!

  8. Ummmm^^^ When did i say i swapped the intakes? lol

Picked up a scan tool and codes are as followed

    P0301 Cylinder 1 misfire

p1540 Speed sensor( already knew that)

P0446 Evaporative Emission System vent control circuit. Probaly the random sensor i found un hooked, however i could not find where it reconnects. It is in the top left of the engine bay(passenger side) and it comes of the harness that has the two 02 sensors for the cats.

    P0302 Cylinder 2 misfire

    P0304 Cylinder 4 misfire

    ........

  9. check engine light and if so what codes?

sounds like the CEL should be on with a speed sensor code at least.

check those codes and see if there's any others than just the CEL.

maybe some nice person will disconnect their speed sensor and see what happens?

sounds a lot like a vacuum leak to me. spray some carb juice under the hood at various hoses.

    Carb juice? what is that?

How do i run codes on this ECU? Yes it does have a CEL but im assuming due to lack of a speed sensor.

  10. My 2000 did not like not having the large volume of air in front of the TB

(Mine did not have a filter in it, just baffles)

but....it was a MAP system not a MAF system.

Which is this? I thought the MAP system started in 2000

The ECU needs to know the speed and the RPM.

I believe it's in some form of "limp home" mode

due to these two inputs being missing.

Its possible it in limp mode, however this car came stock form the factory with no RPM gauge. Im thinking because of this the speed sensor might be messing it up a bit?

Im going to tell him to get that other air filter anyways, thanks

  11. Hello, My brother recently bought an EJ22 5 speed legacy for 1000$ with a blown tranny, I had the driveline from a 98RS so 2 weeks later we have a fully operational Subaru, a nice one at that.

This is the dealo, When we looked at the Car turned on and ran like a top, receipts for bearings being replaced and many other various things.

The car was slanted forward for probably 3 days when in the meantime the rear diff and other PITA things were being dealt with. My brother decided to De-snork it, and replaced the EJ25 style intake ( dual filters, one standard panel, one right at throttle body) and just replace it with just the first panel filter.

Now we go to turn it on and right away the smell of gas is apparent, The Exhaust is fairly black at first then smooths out to a light white/ burnt gas color. Thier is moisture on the ground, light moisture and it is Gas.

You can get the car going if you rev it decently hard but it does not like idle, It will stall like a carbed moter coming to stops with the clutch after downshifting from third into second. The Car has no RPM gauge or Speed Sensor (There is no speed sensor attached as of now, Is this a problem?) It leans out higher in the rpm range, but you can feal the power, The Car has a mix of old 87 with new 91 and a desnork.

Things we did, Removed Spark plugs, Cranked over to clear Cylinders.

Conclusions, Ive heard of De-snorking these cars causing problems, But could it be that bad? Possibly a leaking injector O-ring, very unlikely. Maybe just run it through on the first tank of GAS and go back to 87?

This Car pulls really good for an EJ22, no exhaust leaks and the engine seems solid.

So the car dosent like to idle probably due to flooding and then the car dosent recieve enough fuel in the top end?

    Whats are problem? Please help!
