  1. Thanks for the reply Scott. I plan to find a clean Brat and will need help finding everything for the EJ22 swap. I'll PM you to see if you have any suggestions. Essentially I will be looking for someone to build me a super clean EJ brat. Thanks!

  2. Does anyone know who could do an EJ22 swap for me in the Seattle area? Looking to buy a clean Brat and then pay someone to swap in an Ej22 and do a few other upgrades. Any recommendations on shops or USMB members that do these swaps on the side?

  3. I haven't seen other articles posted on here discussing the upcoming 2011 Impreza XV crossover, so I thought I'd post this from the Geneva Motor Show:

I really hope the dual range 5-speed in the 2011 Impreza XV 2.0R model makes its way to the states! I wish the dual range 5-speed would be available with 2.0D Diesel engine, however according to the article above it will only be available with the 2.0R Turbo gas engine model. A 2.0D Impreza XV with a dual range 5-speed would be awesome to lift and turn into an even more capable off-road vehicle!

I doubt we'll get this dual range 5-speed in the US, but it would be cool.

  5. Today I met up with some friends and decided to head up in the hills in Southern Oregon overlooking the Rogue Valley. We went up Anderson Creek in Talent and took some forest service roads up to old mining roads. We then got on a few trails that were quite a bit of fun. I am waiting on pics from my friend to post of the more challenging obstacles we went through earlier in the day. I mostly got "poser shots," with my camera when we stopped. We eventually made our way up to the top of a plateau with an awesome view down on the Rogue Valley before coming back down Griffin Creek. My Subaru did very well. It was funny to see all of the 4x4's on the trail look at me driving by in amazement that someone was driving a Subaru up there. I guess lifted Subaru's aren't all too common in Southern Oregon. All in all, it was a lot of fun!

  6. I've posted pics of my snorkel before, but here you go:

It's 3" exhaust pipe custom done at my friend's exhaust shop. It's mounted with some tabs on the snorkel that are bolted down to nuts that are welded onto the a-pillar. I topped it off with a Safari Snorkel head and then plumbed it under the hood to an in-line enclosed K&N Apollo air filter. If it weren't for the great deal my friend gave me on the parts and labor, then this would probably cost more than most people want to spend on a Subaru snorkel. Besides getting cooler and cleaner air, so far it has only really helped with driving through deep puddles and streams on trails that splashed up under the hood. I don't have plans of doing any river fording considering the rest of my car is not water-proofed.

  7. Pringles can and duct tape! J/K!

Actually the snorkel I sent to you used to be on my car when it had the stock 1.8L Fuel Injected EA82T. That made it easy to plumb a hose to the snorkel and then put the air filter on the top of the snorkel. Since you're carb'ed, that makes it a bit more difficult without the K&N plenum adapter. Is this the adapter you are looking at? It says it's only $200. Not cheap, but at least $50 less than what you were looking at.

Let me know what you come up with. It would be great to hear what others have done so you don't have to reinvent the wheel.

  8. what kind of difference in MPG with the snorkel?

half of me says it would probably get better: colder, ram air, and K&N...

half of me says it would get worse: lots more travel distance for the air from atmosphere to EFI components...

True, there is a further distance for the air to travel through the snorkel, however that air is much colder and cleaner than the "under the hood," air. I averaged 24mpg last time I checked, but haven't driven the car enough since last weekend to see if there is a fuel economy change.

I just bought a Sachs MadAss scooter, so I've been riding that all week! I'll report back on this thread after my trip to the Oregon dunes to let you know what kind of fuel economy I am getting.

  9. You could take something the diameter you want the hole to be and then trace that onto the fender. You could start with a hole saw and cut a hole slightly smaller than what you need, then use an angle grinder to finish the job. That might work, or do as I did and have a friend use a plasma cutter to cut the hole out and use an angle grinder to smooth out the edges until you have a nice round hole. The inner fender hole doesn't have to look as nice.

I also finished it off with some self adhesive door edge trim. I have some extra, so I should have sent that with the snorkel!

  10. nice but SHEESH thats pricy for a snorkel. i think ill just hunt e-bay for a used one off a jeep or something and make it fit.

You could probably do without the Safari Snorkel head or keep your eyes peeled for a used one off of eBay. Also you could likely plumb the snorkel to the stock air box if you wanted to. I wanted a new in-line air filter and the K&N Apollo was the only in-line air filter that seemed to work for this application. Anyway, not cheap, but I am happy with it. The car will now get much cooler air and the K&N air filter is quite a nice improvement for the EJ22.
