  1. i always fill up all the way. it is carb'ed, so i dont think i have a IAC, and the choke is working. i will check the contacts on the cts, where is that located? also, the starter on my soob died yesterday after it stalled on a busy street:mad: so i am going to replace that this weekend, and might just replace the cts while i am at it. it has trouble starting in the cold mornings, itll start, i have to gas it a bit to keep it going, and then it seems to be running fine, but if i go to start moving it dies, i have to crank it giving it no gas for 30-60 sec, then it turns over and is fine to go (a bit down on power, but that is expected when it's cold). any ideas there? thanks for all the help!
  2. so i just replaced the fuel filter, and its all better! the gas coming out of the in side of the old filter was a rather unpleasant rusty orangish reddish color. is there any way of cleaning out my tank aside from taking it off and getting it steamed? or should i just keep replacing filters every time it does this?
  3. i have set the idle mixture screw. and a correction to my last post, today even after it was warm it ran like crap. seems like the carb isnt getting fuel at the rate it should to stay full. when i accel quickly in 1st, its ok, then when i shift to 2nd, it runs like crap. if i accel very gently (only revving to about 2.5k) and dont gas it too much, it is ok for longer, but then starts to hesitate and run bad, if i push the clutch in and let the engine speed drop for a bit, and then resume, it is ok for a bit, and then acts up again. i plan on replacing the fuel filter soon. that was replaced when i got the car ( about 9 months ago) but it seems like there is a blockage/lack of flow from the tank to the carb. fuel pumps are pretty much go/no go right? can they go bad in a way that they would just have reduced flow?
  4. any ideas guys? might it be ignition timing? the frustrating thing is that the problem magically disappears once i hit operating temp. this morning when i tried to warm it up, with the gas pedal slightly depressed, the engine would rev to about 3k, then fall down to about 300, and then back up to 3k and back down. after a while it stopped, and ran like a top. this is killing me!
  5. so the choke is closed when the engine is cold, and it opens after the engine has been run. any other ideas where to look?
  6. yes it is automatic choke. is that run by vacuum?
  7. now that the weather has finally cooled off, when i go to start my lovely sube in the morning, it starts fine, revs fine, usually wont stay running unless i give it some gas, and if i try to drive off too soon, the engine will stall and wont start up again unless the throttle is wide open. then it will chug at around 50 rpm for while and then eventually picks up. other times it doesnt stall, but will be very hesistant and i have trouble getting up to 35mph until the engine is up to full operating temp. any input on where to start would be awesome, thanks guys!
  8. that makes sense i will give it a look this weekend hopefully. that would be awesome if it was just loose exhaust. thanks!
  9. i thought about that too, but the fact that it goes away the moment i put it in 4wd makes me think it isnt something loose. it has done it since i got it running last spring. i had a couple of CV boots on the front go, and when i replaced those, i didnt notice anything being loose, but i will double check next time i get a chance.
  10. on my 87 4wd, when the engine rpms hit about 2500-3000, the transmission makes a kind of rattle-y, ring-y, ping-y noise. but it goes away when i put it in 4wd hi/lo. it does it when i push the clutch in and rev. can't remember if it does it just in neutral, i will have to check. the transmission is full of oil, but i dont know how old it is. any ideas? thanks!
  11. YAY! moved the hoses and it amazing what'll happen when things are hooked up right! couldnt figure out why it was idling so fast until i check the throttle cable... just a hair tight took it out for a spin and all is well. thanks for the help!
  12. ok so put a new fuel filter in, but it still is running bad. if you give it a little gas it'll rev a bit, but if you give it too much it stumbles and has no power. it will respond better at WOT. i have a couple of mystery vacuum hoses that i dont know where they go: if you plug either or both of the large hoses, the engine will stall. help!
  13. i will check the fuel filter (where is that located?) has good gas the carb i think is ok, this is the first car i have worked on that has a carb, so it definitely might need to be tuned. last known status of the carb was that it was working fine, but that was 10 years ago... so who knows. no vacuum leaks that i know of, but will double check. thanks!
  14. i posted here a while back that i got a free 87 gl 4wd (carb'ed) that needed a new engine. well, i got it in last weekend and couldn't get it to start. worked on it yesterday and it is amazing what happens when you hook the right wires to the right places problem now is that it is running really rough. gotta rev it up to 4k to get it to move without stalling. i am thinking this is a valve and ignition timing problem. i am going to check the timing tonight and hopefully all will be well. any other suggestions?
  15. ahhhh.... probably lift. i am planning to use this as my winter car/ski transport vehicle. i will most likely leave it alone for this year, but who knows what the future may bring
  16. i will try to stop by soon and get some pics of it. the best part of this deal is that i can leave it at the shop until its all back together
  17. ok, i was hoping to get the parts car for about 150, and then i would have all sorts of spare stuff, for the front end anyways! anyways its no rush getting it together. i would like to have it done this winter. i have always wanted to rebuild an engine, so this is the best chance i have. other things i know that the girl needs is a clutch too. maybe the one on the hopeful donor car will be better, but the plate has about 1/16" to go before it hits rivets. probably needs brakes too. thanks for the crazy fast replies!
  18. im new to this board and thought i would share my find! A co-worker of mine's dad owns a body shop that has an 85 (or 87 i can't remember right now) sedan that had been sitting in the back lot for oh, about 8 years (or so ) and had been wanting to do some "house cleaning" back there to clear out space. So he gave it to me for free! only problem is that the engine was knocking really bad (and later after disassembling the engine, i found out that the #1 cylinder rod bearing was.... missing ) unfortunately, the crank was ground down to the point of un-usability, but good news is that my friend who is helping me rebuild an engine for this soob found one that got rear-ended and has a great-running motor in it! but i guess the guy is waiting to deal with insurance, blah, blah, blah, etc. so hopefully i will find out soon if i can use that soob as a donor oh and the one i am looking to fix is a manual with dual range 4wd, ea-82 carb'ed. on another note, i have only found engine rebuild kits for the ea-82 spfi variants, will these work on a carb'ed version, aside from the carb and intake gaskets that are most likely different? thanks and i love this forum!
