  1. A very approprate name for that switch. I was trying to diagnose this problem from 1000 miles away. (my son's car) When he made the 20th call to me late last night it was to say he had something very stupid to confess to me........yup, the duh switch. I love your quote! Thankx
  2. I need to turn to you guys once again. 1999 Forester. After turning on the hazards and shutting them off, they stayed on. I've switched the switch several times but they stay on. I removed the flasher unit and they stop (duh) but turn signals don't work then. Any ideas? Flasher unit? Switch? Thank you for any help. John
  3. Thank you for the help. I replaced the shaft. Don't now how long it would have gone but the stink of grease cooking on the cat. converter was too much to take. Thankx again for the help.
  4. I have a greasy leak in the area of the front right CV Boot on my 99 Forester. After cleaning up the area I found the boot to be torn. I have quite a bit of experience with cars and had a couple of questions. Is the torn boot the only problem here or is there a seal involved. How difficult of a job is this. are there any special tools required? Any help would be great. Thank you.

  6. Thankx, I also did a search and decided to go ahead and remove the 1st one. Guess I was just being too cautious. Looks OK. Thank you to all for the help. John
  7. Can anyone give answers to the two following questions? 1) I was going to change plugs in my sons 99 Forester. Had a heck of a time even getting the boot off the plug (twist -pull) but the problem /question came in when I tried to remove the plug. I gave it about an eighth of a turn and it didn't feel just right so I gave it another 1/8th. Just doesn't feel like it is getting looser like it should. Went ahead and tightened it up instead. Scared it may be screwed up. Wondering if this is typicle. 2) Does anyone know what the wheel lug torque spec is? Thank you for the help.
  8. Thank you for the help. I read with intrest many, many posts about head gaskets. Any other ideas, send them out. I'll be getting after it this weekend. As a side note, I am very happy to have found this site. It appears to be as helpful as one I use all the time for my pass time / project car; 1969 Z28 Camaro. Keep up the good job here. Thank you.
  9. Hi, looks like a great site here. I just bought my 1st Subaru. 1999 Forester. I am a mechanic but no experiance with these cars. I am going to be on the road a lot and want to head off any forseeable problems. It is a one owner w/ 60K miles. The only thing that seems to need attention are the front brakes. Sounds like the wear sensor and peddle seems to go pretty far done. I am planning on replacing the plugs, air and fuel filter, PCV valve, hoses and belts, Auto trans fluid/filter, and brakes as necessary. I guess my question is two fold. Is there anything else I should be checking and is there anything specific to Subaru I should know? Thank you very much.
