  1. 4WD works fine, and it seems like the coolant is going onto the ground for the most part. When this weekend rolls around, I'll really poke around my engine bay. Until then... Time to find information on the rear brake swap!
  2. My vehicle has nearly 133,000 miles on it; a little high but I'm positive my EA82 has more life in it... as long as I put more care into it than the previous owner. When I received the car, we replaced the water pump and a head gasket, but I haven't looked through the cooling system thoroughly enough to find the leak(s). It doesn't overheat as long as I add coolant about once every month. My Loyale, at this point, is drivable and I drive it daily, but I want it to run until I have to swap the engine at 300,000 miles for an EJ. Or maybe the boxer diesel will be in the States by then... It sounds like my car just needs some TLC, and I still have much to learn!
  3. To repair my non-turbo 5-speed '94 Loyale to perfect condition, I've created a list of symptoms that need to be addressed. These are sorted, but these are not prioritized. I'll be addressing the simple fixes and mechanical issues first. Engine, etc. Belts squeal on startup, especially in cold weather Coolant boils after about 10 minutes of driving, lasts ~1 minute Low on transmission fluid? Loses coolant/oil? Idles between 500 - 2,500 RPM. High when engine is cold, even higher in cold weather. Check engine light sometimes illuminates when idling low. Brakes Squealing Wobbling Grinding Weak. Body ~4" Scratches on right doors Cracked right mirror Weak rear hatch struts, especially in cold weather Numerous ceramic engine spray paint speckles on right-rear Tiny paint chips near wheel wells, front grille Discolored grille piece Dents:Driver's door, beneath handle, shallow Left-rear door, front of door, shallow + wide Tiny imperfection in right-rear door 2 very noticeable dents in hood Interior Air conditioning is useless/dusty Window tint is peeling Needs thorough cleaning Some white latex paint speckles in rear Paintless spot on driver's door + passenger door Slight sunfading on dashboard Need to find left-rear seatbelt Small rip in headliner Fabric detached on backside of rear seat Other Holes in muffler/exhaust Slightly out of alignment Power locks do not lock all doors unless turned by key (not inside lever) And the Subalou as it looks now: I'll update this thread as the list (hopefully) gets smaller, or remember anything I forgot... If anyone knows of simple fixes, it would save me some searching. Thanks! ***EDIT*** Aww man, I made a typo in the subject line. It's supposed to be The to-fix list. Oh well.
  4. I'm losing engine coolant in my EA82 Loyale 5-speed, non-turbo. I'm not sure where I'm losing it from, though. I replaced the gasket leading into the cylinder head not too long ago, and that's where I was losing most of it, but I'm leaking somewhere else now. What are some common places for it to leak from? Anything else I should check?
  5. I have a 1994 Loyale 5-Speed, and I love it. However, it was not well-maintained by its previous owner, and now my ol' EA82 is starting to crap out on me. Seals, pumps, belts, you name it, it's either been replaced or needs to be. Also, the tiny power output just doesn't cut it. Before I get any farther, I have about $1000 to work with. I'm pretty sure it won't get me the package I'm hoping for, but we'll see. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that the EJs will bolt right into where an EA engine used to sit. As long as this is true, I want to replace the worn-out EA82 with a newer, more powerful EJ engine. I'd love to go big and purchase a tail-kickin' EJ257, but I know I can't afford one new, and finding a WRX STi (most likely crashed) will be quite a feat in Twin Falls, Idaho. I'll most likely need to find a transmission to go with a new EJ, hopefully a manual. What are the most cost-effective options available for $1000? Is anyone selling an engine I would be interested in? Anything else I should know? Thanks!
  6. Wow, thanks for the great replies everyone! The car has 130,000 miles on it, as does the engine. As for my funny lights in the dash, I flung the front belt off of the pulleys somehow, and it must have been off for a while since when I tried to start it after school, the battery was dead. Put the belt back on, and all my warnings are gone, save for the engine light. We've put the poor old Suby in our shop until we make her more reliable. If I'm going to put a bit of money and time in repairing the EA82, the EJ22 swap sounds very good right now, especially if I can find an EJ22T and swap some 2.5 liter heads on. Now, excuse my youthful ignorance, but I can't find how much a fair price on an EJ22T would be. If it would be cheaper to buy a standard EJ22 and put a turbocharger on, I'd be willing to do that. If someone could give me a ballpark figure, that'd be great. As far as racing goes... I've decided if I want to race, I need a race car. The Loyale is anything but that, but it was a free hand-me-down from grandpa, suits my current needs well, and if I do any racing, it will be time-only runs at our local drag strip. I'll make her into a great daily driver, something nice and reliable that will be the envy of my peers. Thanks, everyone! I'll take some pictures soon.
  7. Well, where should I begin? I recently received a '94 Loyale from gramps, and I want to make this a fun, reliable car. Something I could race, even. Before I drove the car, I knew the car would need mechanical work and lots of it, followed by lifting it and otherwise customizing it. Firstly, I noticed my car was running hot. And smoking. And making put-put noises, especially with more throttle. My father's a mechanic, and he helped me replace the intake gasket and tighten a few exhaust manifold bolts and that made it sound better and lose *less* coolant and oil. However, it's still running hot, losing oil or some other fluid that's burning off into smoke, and way too many dashboard warning lights are on. These lights include check engine light (not initially, but comes on after a bit of driving then begins to flash), brake fluid, voltage, and parking brake (?). I certainly don't drive with my parking brake set, so what's up with that? As far as the engine goes, I'm not sure where to start. I'm losing fluid somewhere; what are the common places? My father and I plan to do a full tune-up soon, but what are common issues, or issues that need to be addressed firstly? Once it's finally running strong and reliable, I want to make it faster, quicker, cooler, and overall less laugh-at-able (Protip: my friend keeps challenging me to a race against his VTEC Civic because he knows he'll win). I'd like to give it a bit of off-road and a little bit of tuner, but I'm fairly unfamiliar with EA82s and what mods are available. I've thought of adding a turbo or swapping the engine, but both seem cost-prohibitive (I'm a student.) What should I look at to get my baby in tip-top condition, and what can I do to "pimp my ride?" Thanks in advance!
  8. Nice to find someone local that has a Loyale and cares about it! Twin Falls here.
