  1. Hey guys I'll tell ya what I am going CRAZY because I am not working. I would like to do some carpentry, or plumbing (not licensed) but I've done enough on my own that I can be of a benefit to a journeyman. Northguy can vouch for my physical prowess and work ethic. I live about 5 or 6 miles from Nine Mile Dam top beyond Big Sandy. PM me if there is anything out there for employment even if it's part time or temporary. Thanks :burnout:

  2. I am a firm believer in used autos. I had a GREAT 97 2.2 liter Subaru from Anchorage only to have it totaled by a Russian on I-5.

Enough of that, I am in the market again after a year of missing my Subaru. I want to buy a very new used one say 2000 up to 2005 or so. WHEN WAS THE HEAD GASKET ISSUE RESOLVED? Or is it still an issue? if it is still an issue what is the cost to have it redone at a shop?(Then I can deduct that from the selling price)

  3. Got rear ended on I-5 yesterday in my 1997 Leg Wag. No idea yet as no tickets were issued but her insurance seems like it is going to pay, but how screwed wll I get on the deal. I got a nice 1997 Subaru Leg with 85K on the od. I did a autotrader search and found that the upper end 1997 Subaru are going between 9999 and 8000 I have a Brighton that has had every recommended shop adjustment etc. done on time since it was purchased.

I am mad as hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! North guy call me tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only car left for me to drive is a Taurus with 188,000 on the od and Iam suposed to go on a month long road trip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Huh, Saab. Good name for a car that breaks down on a regular basis. Owned one once, a SAAB 99. Always had something wrong with it. That said I have a few good things to say before the final slam. It was the quietest car I ever owned when riding down the highway. Fairly nimble etc.

Now the final slam: My relatives in Sweden will not even consider a Saab unless it’s an airplane. They buy Volvo and that is it. They check the serial number on all new cars to make sure its a Tues, Wed, Thurs production model. They told me they do this because of the extreme amount of slothness due to weekend hangovers on Monday and the Friday syndrome, "get it done and lets start to party for the weekend on Friday night".

  5. Hey Scott, just got back from Kenai for the weekend. Don't shy away from putting in an aftermarket deck in your subie. All three of mine have aftermarket decks - 1 Blaupunkt and 2 Panasonics.
Matt, Matt, Matt...I thought you knew better than that. Its not the fear of aftermarket its the MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hell, Pull Apart will sell me stuff dirt cheap. For instance I bought a 300 dollar side window for my Caravan, when I had it, for 23 bucks...tinted and everything just like the original!!! I picked up a alternator for a Galant for 12 bucks and it worked great. You know me, I'm a cheap rump roast Finn!!! Just like the other one you know!hahahahahahahaha
  6. I was planning on going to a local "junk" yard(Pull Apart)to look for the roof rails so I can install a rack system.

First question: B/4 I go to the "junk" yard I want to know what years did Subaru make the same body style that will fit my 97? That way if I find a wagon with roof rails I can be sure they will fit.

Second question: If the Subarus I find there have a radio CD player in one of these cars is there a sight chance that the electrical connection on that system is like what I have on my radio cassette player?

  7. I Heck, the upper Canadian Rockies are worththe trip alone. But right now, the cost of fuel makes the trip spendy.

Naw, take a few broad heads along, a bow and a pit bull terrier and rob banks on the way North to defray cost. hahahahaha

I remember on one trip I was low on cash and no charge card (forgot it in Wasilla), so I pulled into this little farming town in northern Saskatchewan and asked for the nearest bank as I was in need of money fast. The woman gave me directions and off I went. I was in the bank and being helped within 10 minutes of that conversation when in walks two RCMP. They stayed until I got my business done and then followed me out and asked me if I was the guy that talked with the little old lady...they said her name but it escapes me now. I said I was!. They told me that an American bank robber was in town and he was going to rob their local bank. They had a good laugh about it, told me to have a good trip and got on their way.

Canada is fun just talk like a Yooper and all goes well.

  8. I had a ball on this trip. The only down side was I did not have a dog with to keep me company. Alaska was a smooooth trip to the Canadian Line. I was going 'bout 70mph except when I came near Glennallen or Tok as the Troopers are based there.

The Canadian Boarder Guard, a pudgy female, was soooo ****ing anal with me that at last I was planning whether to **** with her or just let it go and get thru the boarder without an anal inspection. God damn of the 14 trips up and down the Alcan I've done this ****ing bitch was the worst of all the guards I have ever come up against.

Once I was past her it was great. I hit Haines Jnt. as the sun was falling behind the mountains, so I stopped took a piss and slammed some more Rock Star (diet of course), popped another can of Coke and started off again. About 20 miles or so out of Haines Jnt. I saw 5 nice elk...real beauties. I continued to Whitehorse. Slept there for 3 hours and then started off again.

This day started off real well. I was in Watson Lake before I knew it. While gassing up I ran in to a climbing buddy that flies climbers and tourists into Mt. McKinley from Talkeetna. We had a wee bit of a talk and then it was off again for both of us but in opposite directions. After Watson Lake I started seeing the most animals I have ever seen on any previous trip. (moose, black bears in two color phases, brown and back, Stone sheep ewes, lambs and one curl and a half ram, tons of caribou, buffalo with calves and ONE BIG bull buffalo, a coyote, deer and of all things a damn beaver walking in the ditch outside of Fort St. John)

I slept again outside of Dawson Creek for about 5 hours before getting up and heading for Prince George. Once I hit George I knew I would be home in time to watch the Simpsons. Ha... In a small town called Quisnell(spelling might be off) I stopped for some espresso and eggs Benedict...yummmm. Ate, drank and blasted off for the Fraiser.

All in all it was one of the best trips I have ever experienced as far as wildlife go and good road conditions. But remember the Alcan changes daily; so don't take this trip report as gospel if you are planning on heading to God's True Country.

  9. We had a 1990 Toyota Tersel that over heated, so we flushed the system, replaced the thermostat, and put in a new 50/50 mix. It still over heated. Went to NAPA and told them of my dilemma. They told me to go to a shop and have my catalytic converter checked. Sure enough it was the cause of the problem. I guess if it is plugged up it can cause the engine to over heat.

  10. Are there any web sites showing lifts kits for Brightons? Listing prices, time spent putting one together etc. Not body kits but suspension sits.

    thanks sisu

  11. I am a first time Subaru owner.

Here is my question: When I first start my wagon after it has been standing so its a cold engine. I hear this tick, tick, tick. It increases as the engine speed increases. BUT it disappears after the engine is warm and purring.

I can stop go into a store for a few minutes come out and the tick will not be there. Is this normal or do or is there a problem.

1997 auto trany, 2.2 engine, 78,000+ on engine and a new oil change.
