where else can I put an MPFI non turbo?
giving up on the electronics in my 87 XT. I have a newly rebuilt EA82 MPFI non-turbo I want to put into something else. What will it "bolt" into without rewiring the car to make it work? Another XT is obvious, but I haven't found one on CL within 500 miles worth going to get! Bill (in Denver area)

giving up on the XT
I had always heard that the 87.5 was for the funky distributor/ECU/etc used on the late production 87 XT. I know that my car is a late May 87 build and has the black round plug distributor. I have seen early 87's with the old style and the 88 with the new style and neither will swap out to the late 87 ( I have tried - made a harness/pigtail to swap them in). Same for the ECU not being interchangeable...I have tried (88 anyway). Bill

giving up on the XT
if you mean is the 94 a turbo it is not. The XT is not either. The XT wiring is what I'm running away from so to carry it over into the 94 would be foolish in my opinion. I still have the DCOE weber and a 2 wire distributor I could put on it, but is it worth it? I tired of chasing ghosts with the existing wiring. Getting power ot the tach would be next if I go that route. I don't know...Its like giving up on an old friend Bill

giving up on the XT
crap then. well, how 'bout the MPFI install into a 94 then. If I have to swap the heads I might as well fix the engine in the car already...

giving up on the XT
well all, I'm running up the white flag. After almost a year of dinkin around with the 87.5's electrical system, I am giving up. So, I have found a 94 Loyale AWD wagon that needs an engine and since I had just rebuilt the engine in the XT, I figure I'll just swap them out and part out the XT. I have a couple of questions tho. Since both are sticks, is everything the same (clutch disk, etc)? Plus I assume I will have to swap out the intake on the XT with the single port intake on the wagon or has anyone done a MPFI swap into a SPI system? thanks all Bill

bad alt causing misfire on 87.5 XT non T
thanks Coug, GD, but I swapped the distributor with another to rule out the whole thing. The only code the ECU's ever given me is 555 Bill

did it...it didn't go away... Bill

bad alt causing misfire on 87.5 XT non T
are we talking the main harness or something else?. I pulled the seat to get to the main harness but didn't see anything else. Did I plow thru and go to far? I found no connectors/splices crimps or visible breaks in the main harness...I haven't put the seat back in yet either tho.... Bill

bad alt causing misfire on 87.5 XT non T
anyone ever run into this?. I have been chasing a phantom misfire for a long time now. Starts and runs fine but after a while it wants to die...tach flutters (bounces then drops to zero), etc...get out of the throttle and it idles fine and tach returns to normal. If its under the hood and gas or ignition related, I've replaced it. BUT...I was just reading on a Range Rover site that a guy had a similar problem and replaced the alt and it went away. Anyone ever had this on a Ru? Bill

cutting up an intake
G, thats actually where I'm working from at this point. After looking at it again this morning I "forgot" that the water jacket was a part of the turbo manifold. BUT... the spider is actually a two piece so I'm now working on a sketch of the spider bolt pattern for an adapter plate to the weber or am I wasting my time and someone already makes these? The actual adapter plate I was working on will adapt any dual port VW carb/manifold to a Subie dual port head. Bill

cutting up an intake
I kinda had that thought as well after I posted but I figured I run up the flag and see who saluted. Plus, if I ever have to put the XT back "original" I could...wouldn't run, but it would be original. Bill

cutting up an intake
I have a project to do in the next week or two and seek out the wise council of the forum. I have an EA82 dual port turbo intake from a GL and a Spider intake from a dual port XT. One of the two is going to get its flanges cut off for a dual weber conversion project. Which one do I whack?...meaning which in the future do all feel is going to be the hardest to find so please don't cut that one up!!! thanks Bill

EA82 in a dunebuggy
GLoyale, If I am to use an ECU then I will need your wisdom on the re-wire from a 87.5 XT to "other" ECU... I seem to remember you doing something down similar lines of swapping an XT ECU fpr something else and it required wire swaps? Was that for fire/ignition or FI function? The ECU from the donor XT is dead and/or the harness and I could not find another 87.5 ECU to swap in so I decided to use the engine elsewhere....

how do I wire the injection without an ECU?

EA82 in a dunebuggy
need some advice - putting an EA82 into a dunebuggy. Engine is out of an 87XT injected w/4 wire dizzy. Already got the swap to carb taked care of, I need recommendations on what distributor to use and how to wire it/set it up. thanks Bill

thank you! I shall go visit the local yard tomorrow! Bill

distributor change
ok GD...any recommendation on wiring it? Bill

distributor change
well, what started out as a simple fix to a problem has become a rather beast of a hot rod....how 'bout a pair of Weber 48 IDA's sitting above each head? Took a VW shorty manifold and siamese'd it to the old spider flange. You open the hood and this thing looks scary as crap. Whats REALLY nice is all the snakes (hoses/etc) are gone.

distributor change
lets just say I need to do this and be done with it..... I need to put a points type distributor or a 2 wire in an 87.5 XT. I have so far made the successful transition from FI to carbs but the start of all this is a major harness failure so I need to swap out the distributor and get rid of the original problem. What distributor should I use? Can I use an early 2 wire for an EA82 ? If so, where do I wire it in? If I go points, I'd assume I'm using an EA81 dizzy and have to change out the drive gear? thanks Bill

87 XT distributor needed for test
swapped out the MAF and sensor, removed the cat and swapped out the ignition amp from another running car. Bill

weber on an MPFI EA82
except I just rebuilt this engine.....but no I haven't pulled the seat yet

87 XT distributor needed for test
G long story short, when it starts it runs fine. When it warms up I get electrical/ignition problems specifically cuts out under load or constant throttle above 2,000rpm - not fuel but fire - engine cuts off, tach starts bouncing - with no noticeable change in how it sounds/running - right before it happens so you know its coming, etc, stop - let it cool and you start all over again. I have swapped everything electircal under the hood to the point that I'm pretty sure its a harness or ECU propblem at this point unless I have been swapping in bad parts... Bill

weber on an MPFI EA82
proposing the switch because I can't keep it running due to an electrical failure somewhere in the ignition that after almost 2 years I have yet to be able to fine. If I switch the car to a points/Petronix type distributor, I have to switch to carb since there will be no signal for the FI to fire from
