  1. Thanks all for the suggestions and I'll attack the thermostat this weekend and report back.

Ok, heres my funny "get it home" story. When it did this (over heating) the 2nd time I was across town. Stopped at a 7/11 and bought a bag of ice, opened it down the middle and dropped it in the cavernous space infront of the rad. Almost made it home before the temp moved up towards the red again.

  2. noted above - running around for about 20 minutes everything is fine. Get out on the road and the temp starts to climb . Doesn't get into the red but just under. No "rattle" that you'd associate with internal over heating due to rod/ring/oil/etc has been noticed (ok..other than the "normal" Ru rattle). Anyone want to throw out a sugestion? I'm hoping thermostat but Im not oblivious to the fact that the bottom end could be gone - but it only has 156k on the clock and the last Ru I had (79 Wagon) went over 200k before I sold it - and I never went into the engine.

  3. I didn't check timing with green connectors plugged. I have heard of this procedure, but I don't know how to do it. What will be different with the connectors plugged? How do I check the timing with them plugged? That is something I am not sure of. I checked the fusible links, but I don't know about the resistor pack...I'll look for it. Thanks.

87 XT here....my "lil green plug" is right side trunk under the speaker shelf. really good place to put it...took me a week to find it

  4. ok...did the yard thing today and the EJ22 is an interesting lil bugger. Has anyone tried to retro-fit an EA82 MPFI intake/Distributor to one? I did find a 92GL with an EA82 and only 80k on the clock (hit hard in rear so I would assum it was running - extremely clean car otherwise) so I may just go that route instead of all the hassle of the EJ swap. As far as the auto swap, there was an autobox XT that I had a real good look at. NO WAY am I gonna go thru that brain damage to switch out all the console crap that goes with the autobox.....Bill

  5. ok...thats what I love about this place..education!!

having not even seen an EJ22 (guess I should make my way to a local salvage yard to see one huh), is there a way to convert it to having a distributor or is it like newer Fords/etc with COP (coil on plug) setup and no distributor hole available?

If I have to do the ECU, where is it and best one/years engine/ECU to grab?

    Thanks all

  6. I've read so many posts about harness changes/mods, this wire/that wire 10% of the "new" harness of wires is all you have left, etc... that I think im goin crazy.

What about the old harness of a 87XT FWD EA82 MPFI OHC WONT work with the EJ22? Does the EJ series have so many new wires and things running it that the old wires are useless?...

Temp sensor wire is a temp sensor wire right? TPS switch is a TPS switch right? Ok, so they may have changed the plug style but why not just change out the old into the new and do away with the problem ?? Put your old Temp sensor in the new hole and away you go ...right? I may be a bit old-school, but its just a friggin bigger block (case) and if your only wiring up enough stuff to get it running, whats the hassle?

As I make my switch from the above EA82 to EJ22, Im also toying with making a switch from 5spd to autobox. Due to my wife breaking her foot several years ago, every time she drives the XT she can barely walk the next day from the pain of shifting. Does the autobox come complete with its own brand of "wiring" woes? I know about EAT and AT transmissions so will a 3AT bolt up to an EJ22? Is there an Engine/Tranny combo someone could recommend as I begin my trip down insanity way?

pardons for the rant but thanks for the ear..

  7. ok...found a 80k mile EJ22 unit at a local yard for $79.95 special price today only etc...

popped timing belt looks to the the only problem as the car is pretty clean otherwise.

rather than going the adaptor plate route, why cant I just transplant the engine AND 5spd tranny into the XT? I can get the tranny for an extra $49.95. What else is different??

combo if I get both are out of a 92 Legacy

    thanks

    Bill

also...found a 86 XT6 yesterday in a local yard that is pretty much all there if someone needs anything

  8. well...so much for thinking it was a "drop-in" swap. From the sounds of it, even tho they are both XT's they're nowhere near similar under the hood structurally. As far as turbo install...doesn't that require some additional wiring/etc as well? If its this much work, Im seriouslly thinking about the EJ route...

  9. I have an 87XT w/EA82 and 5 speed. I was thinking of doing an EJ22 or 25 swap until now. I have found a ER27 in an XT6 that runs good but hit hard in the rear. What would it take to swap in the ER for the EA?

    thanks

OH BTW....when the rear of the car got banged, it didn't get to the axle. I am thinking of getting the 5 lug/disks and replace the 4 lug/drum rear...what do I need other than the disk/caliper?...master?...dist. block?...

    thanks

  10. I have an 87 XT SPFI EA82 5spd that has begun its morning ritual of a long puff of smoke on cold start-up so either a rebuild or swap is in order. I have been chasing various threads on upgrades and swaps, and an EJ swap looks like a possibility for more power but what all do I need? THAT list of goodies (and where do I find them) I haven't seen in any of the threads....

  11. question oh great ones....

We have an 87 XT GL'ld (ok...was a DL and I put all the GL stuff in it) 1.8 5 speed with 142,000 on the clock. Car started out as our oldest daughters, then she got married and went on to faster things but we hung on to Ru. It has been a backup car for many years and he is loved by all. Heres the problem, wife broke her foot several years ago, and in more recent months, driving a stick hurts her foot REAL bad. Thus Im considering a auto box swap for the 5 speed. Anyone done this?...is/are the parts a straight forward swap or is it more than a transaxle/console parts exchange? (like half shafts, and other goodies). Does it have to be from AN XT or do other Subaru Autobox's fit?

On a similar note, the local salvage yard has an XT6 that I was considering a heart transplant into Ru before the autobox idea. Now, Im considering doing both...other than engine and ECU (I would guess anyway) what changes are there?

    Thanks for your time
