Clunking and squealing....?
I wish I could say what was going on, but alas, I can only say that you are not alone! My 89 GL wagon started doing this a few months ago. I guessed the squeal was coming from the bearings and the clunks from somewhere in teh suspension. a year or so ago I replaced both front hub assemblies and axles. I hope someone who knows more will respond to this thread! KDR :-\

Drivin' without a driveshaft??
Thanks all. I've removed the rear half of the drive shaft as the utterly destroyed ujoint was the one closest to the diff. This resolved the vibration problem -- I'd forgotten just how smoothly the old girl could run. Feels like a new car! Better yet, when I took her for a test drive after removing the half-shaft I saw an old sub in someone's front yard -- an 88 GL wagon. He gave it to me so now I have a parts car as well! Won't have to drive for years in FWD only! What a day. Mabye life doesn't suck. kdr

Drivin' without a driveshaft??
So i need a new (used) driveshaft as the Ujoints are bad and my teeth are falling outfrom the resulting vibration. So I wonder, why can't I pull the driveshaft, run in 2wd only, reglue my teeth and look for a replacement driveshaft? Anyone have an idea what this might do? Will the transer case or rear diff or rear axles be damaged by turning more freely than per spec?

89 GL Wagon: Source for driveshaft and replacement 1.8L engine
Hi all. Does anyone know of a reliable source for decent replacement engines? The old girl has about 225,000 miles on her original motor and its time to start looking for another. I am also looking for a 2 piece driveshaft, as the UV joints are in need of replacing and I am led to believe the pins are welded so the joints cannot be replaced. Alas. Thanks Snowman and Calebz for your response to my previous thread. 'preciate it. KDR

89 GL wagon: Where are the vacuum actuator and 4wd vacuum switch located?
OK. I have a nasty vibration that begins at about 20 mph and peaks at 35 mph, resolving into a dull roar by the time I reach 55 mph. I've replaced tires and struts, didn't help. Oddly, the vibration will dissappear if I switch to 4wd and accelerate. When i stop accelerating the vibration returns. It is always present in 2wd. One of the univeral joints on the drive shaft (from the transfer case to the rear diff) is a bit loose, but not bad and I reckon the shaft isn't turning in 2wd anyway so this is (maybe?) not the problem. I understand there is a vacuum switch for the 4wd and an actuator but I can locate neither. Could this be teh source of teh vibration, as if somhow the car is running somewhere between 2wd and 4wd? Where are these vacuum bits? Help! I have to take the old girl to Maine (from Maryland) in June and would like to have some idea what is going on here. Thanks.
