  1. Any contact info on DHM subaru in medford? i googled it and didn't come up with anything. I'll check him out if i can get a hold of him. Thanks.
  2. Thanks for the comments. I'm going to run it as is until I can get it checked out. I'll just take it easy until then. Thanks for taking the time to make comments. I wish I could contribute somehow. I'll probably keep asking questions without having any answers for you guys. Hope that's not a problem.
  3. Sorry, its an 88 gl. If what you said is bad, is it safe to drive on it at all right now? I have a 10 mile drive to work and it seems fine except for those tight left turns which I can avoid. I just dropped $800 into for the clutch. AHHH.
  4. Hi, I have a simple question that I am clueless to and am a little afraid to ask because I don't know who bad it is. When I take a left turn, and really turn the wheel like when I'm going for a parking space, there is a terrible noise going on in the front left area of my car. I'm guessing the axle but I'm clueless especially compared to you subie gods. I wouldn't know what to search for. It sounds like high tension cables being plucked or just a sharp crunching noise. I avoid turning the wheel that far at all costs now. What should I do?
  5. Hey everybody. I got the car back and its shifting smoothly. It cost $800. they put in some new gasket seals, replaced the pivot ball for the clutch, the clutch, and a clutch cable. I'm happy I have a working subie. A little expensive but they did a good job and I'm happy.
  6. Okay, I'm starting to feel a little better. The cable was talked about before hand as were the seals. I'm just in a little shocked at the price. I think he's only charging 70/h because when he originally said the price for JUST the labor on the clutch he had 3.8 hours and came up with $266 so thats $70/hour. There was a little extra labor afterward because of something with the clutch that they told me about. I'm not going to jump on the guy or anything like that. I'm just totally un-knowledgeable about this stuff so its hard to judge anything. Paid $500 for the car and will pay to have it fixed when its not running but man that's a lot. I guess thats the price you pay when you have an older car and don't know how to fix it. I'll update tomorrow. Thanks for the comments.
  7. I don't know my way around under the hood very much (now I wish I knew a thing or two though). I have an 88 GL. I love it and have always loved subarus. My clutch went out and I took it to this place. He said the clutch was $280 plus labor. I know they only cost like $100 (right?) I called NAPA and thats what they said. He also said they sent the flywheel out to be resurfaced, replaced a couple seals in the back of the engine (i'm not sure what the names were, gasket? cam?) and they had to order this ball part where the fork sits on in the clutch and pushed through (I don't really know, just trying to remember what he said. he said he'd never seen that on a subaru) and put in a new clutch cable. he said the parts were $480 and labor was $400. I can't believe it! its not a turbo. I thought $550 maybe. Any input of what else might have cost so much. I'll find out tomorrow more details and let you guys know exactly what went on but I don't want to pay this until I find out. People like this guy and that makes me think he isn't trying to rip me off. The car sat there for two weeks though. It's frustrating. I briefly talked to him on the phone and he told me all this but I had to go. So any advise on what to say/ask would be great. thanks! you guys on here are awesome.
  8. Thanks for the input. I had a guy take the clutch cable out (after not seeing any fraying with it still in) and said it looked fine. So I think I'm going to replace the clutch. Its alright though the car almost has 200,000 miles on it so its about that time, as far as I know, to get a new one anyway. The car runs so well otherwise. Just a little leaking oil, about a quart every two tanks of gas. Thanks.
  9. So I'm not very mechanically inclined so I need all the help I can get. I have an '88 gl. My clutch has never slipped except a couple of times in first but it would still be in gear. Yesterday I was driving and the clutch pedal went almost all the way to the floor. I could barely change gears and had to pull over turn the car off, put it in first and drive it home like that. I was able to change the gears some of the time, but mostly not. So is it my cable or my whole clutch or what? Thanks for any input. I searched around but it almost seemed like this question was actually too broad rather than too specific. You guys are amazing on here. Thanks.
  10. hey, im wondering with or without a conversion how big tires/wheels can i put on my '88 gl wagon before rubbing becomes a problem. i dont want to lift my car yet but im thinking about doing the 6 lug conversion and dont want to buy wheels and tires for the conversion to find that they are going to rub. i dont mind banging out the outside or cutting in. i just dont want to lift it (cant afford it even if it is real cheap). so any input helps. thanks! Zane
  11. hi,

i live in ashland and have an '88 gl. i need some help with figuring out how to get bigger wheels on my car. i've learned a little bit but am new to this site and am having a hard time finding a clearly laid out way with different options to get bigger wheels than 13' or 14'. i think i've seen you driving around in ashland. nice ride.
