  1. oh man....i just moved away from corvallis. was living in philomath for the last 5 years and have been wanting to hook up with some offroading subby nuts for a long time. now i'm up by astoria. lookin to put a lift on my subby here this winter/spring.
  2. I had a very simular problem with an old 77 chevy pick-up last month...new pick-up coil in the distributor and havn't had the probllem sence.
  3. around 100k miles ago, i picked up one of these Japanese imports for i think it was around 400 bucks....it's been a while. anyways, the swap was fairly easy, me and my dad did it over a weekend. only prob, was i had to re-use my carb, the one that came on the new/used block wasn't in very good shape, and i couldn't find a new one at the time. liike i said though, i've got 100k miles on it, and still going OK...though, it's soon to be swapped out for a turbo model.
  4. Hey guys, i've troleld around the boards here for a couple days, figured i'd interoduce myself. Names spencer, i live in Clatskanie (out between astoria OR, and Longview WA). Been driving a 1990 loyale since 2002, been my only vehicle for the majority of that time, and my daily driver for all of it. I'm just now venturing into the realm of lifting it up a little, which has lead me to the boards here. I've replaced the Engine, and Trans both in my subby...the engine had to go, but tranny was a miss-diagnosed wheel hub i'd ground the gears off. other than that, my mechanical knowledge of the subby is fairly limited. I would have liked to go on the Xmas tree run, but didn't find it on the boards till 12pm the night before, and wasn't anywhere near ready/informed to go. i'll be keepin a close eye out for other events though...would like to meet some other subby nuts and see in person what kind of stuff is availablle to do to mine. so if anyone is headed out to the mountains this winter and want to pull a stock loyale with em, lemme know:). hopefully by spring i'll have everything lined up to garage the subby for a week or two and lift it up. i'm looking forward to picking some subby brains, and offering any knowledge i might know to those that need it.
  5. I've had mine some-what freeze up on me in the cold on flat ground. forcing me to rev the engine up nice and high while slipping the clutch to break it loose....not my favorite thing to do.
  6. i've had my 1990 loyale since 2002. got it with 140k miles, it's got 240+ on it now. i replaced the engine soon after i got it....replaced the transmission a few years later 3rd was starting to grind. i was drivin up a hill, down shifted into 3rd, and got a terrible metal on metal grind and no power to the wheels, coasted to a stop, towed it home and replaced the tranny. pulled it out of the driveway, and same metal on metal with no power to the wheels. turned out i ground the wheel hub spines completly off, and the axle was spinning in the hub. still got the old tranny in the garage incase i need it again. which leads me to my point...the biggest issue i've had with my 90 loyale...wheelbearings....lots and lots of wheel bearings. and the most frustrating part, is they require some kind of special tool to get out from what i understand, so everytime i drop $250 bucks at the shop to get them done. since 2002, i think i've installed 6-7 wheel bearings, and one wheel hub. other than that, it's been an awsome car...and the 100k miles i put on it havn't been the friendliest of miles...several trips to Utah from Oregon in December/January, lots of trips to the mountains for snowboarding/rock climbing. the current engine is getting a little tired, so i'm lookin at droppin a turbo into it and see what i can do there. but it's never been one to piin you in the seat from the line. all in all...the best car i've ever owned.
  7. another posibility is the exhaust...if it dies when you accelerate, but will hold an idle just fine, it could be the catalytic converter, or plugged muffler. ran into this on my loyale. took the pipes off in the driveway and drove it around the block exhausting straight off the manifold...the cops came by about 15 min later i guess it was kinda loud.
  8. I too am looking for a lift for a 91 loyale. I'd like to be able to stay with the stock suspension, drivetrain, and avoid fender cutting. mostly because my limited mechanical abilities....after all i'm an electrician. i've looked at the stuff from SJR, and it looks reasonable, but would also like a comparison. would also like to hear feedback on what kind of a job i'm looking at...will my subby be torn apart in the garage for 3 months while i figure out how i got into the mess i'm in, or will i have it back on the road after a long weekend?
  9. on snow or ice, i usually just get on the gas hard and turn the wheel about 90 degrees...wait 1/2 a second for the back end to start commin around, pull it back to 1/4-1/2 throttle steeer into it and feather the throttle and/or steering to keep the backend in back, and front end en front. slow steady acceleration will pull the front end, deceleratoin will pull the back end around. avoid jerking at this point on steering, or throttle. point your front tires in the general direction you want the car to gousing the accel/decel to adjust the amount of slide you have. Find a nice big empty parking lot and practice for a few hours.
