  1. I'm looking to install better seats than the stock ones. At 5'11" I find the stock seats don't go back far enough on my 84 wagon, so my butt does all the support work rather than spreading the load over the lower thighs. Tiring on longer trips.

    Two questions:

Can I just relocate the stock frame rails farther back somehow to get the stock seats to go back farther?

If not, what are better seats to install? Either using the stock EA81 frame rails or maybe an easy mod. I don't have welding skills or access to a person who does.

    Thanks.

  2. I have an 84 GL wagon, D/R 4 speed. Wanna buy a new radiator and would like to get a two-row if possible. Radiators.com only lists an OEM replacement type, and for a 1.6 liter motor. How do I get hold of a two-row for my EA81?

Did EA81 Turbos come with two-row rads? What year(s) were the turbos?

Also, on the radiators.com website I noticed that there are different prices for EA81 radiators depending on body style. I would think the Brats, sedans, wagons and hatches would all have the same radiator since the sheetmetal would be basically the same.

  3. I change fuel filters on carbed cars every 10-15K miles, and keep a spare in the car along with tools to change it. Has saved my a$$ a number of times over the years.

My experience with gutting the cat on an EA82 carbed car was that it lost torque due to too little restriction. Suggest you drill a hole thru the cat's guts with a hole saw, rather than take it all out.

  4. Most people run the stock 195 degree thermostat but you can get 180, which might be useful if you live where it's hot or you tow/carry heavy loads. You should probably stay with 195 for the better heat.

For air bubbles: take off the rdiator cap, start the motor, turn the heater all the way to hot--I don't think you need to turn the fan on. This will circulate coolant thru the heater core. Bubbles will pop as they get to the hole where the radiator cap is, due to low ambient air pressure, compared to the pressure inside the cooling system. Add coolant if necessary to keep it full, so no more air bubbles occur. When it starts to rise at the hole where the radiator cap goes, due to the coolant heating up, put the cap back on. By then there should be no bubbles in the system.

  5. Hi Paul,

No it's not sold yet, thanx 4 axing. Thought I had a nibble but am getting no reply to my voicemail messages. Oh well.... But the financial need is no longer there. Looking forward to playing with it in the snow down here; hope it snows A LOT, like a huge one (22"!!!) we had last year, over the President's Day holiday. I was stuck on duty (security guard) for 38 HOURS! Mega paycheck for that week, almost $1000 after taxes.

  6. Try these:

    ............................Primary.......Secondary

    .

    Fuel......................140.............140

    .

    Idle........................60..............55

    .

    Air Correction.........165.............160

These are certainly in the ballpark. Emulsion tubes are probably OK. What jets do you have now, and what kind of car did the carb come off of?

  7. I did the airbox mod, and then installed a free-flowing Turbo muffler. Definitely cutting out the bottol of the airbox is the single best mod you can make--it's free and easy, and gives noticeable improvement over 4000 RPM. Maybe 10 horses. The muffler made no difference, but that may be because I did the airbox first. Possibly doing the muffler first would have made a noticeable difference, but I believe the big restriction is in the intake.

And pulling off the PS and AC sounds good, too. My Loyale wagon has a non-functioning AC switch, so I've been thinking of pitching the AC. Might as well do the PS too...
