  1. I have an 98 OB manual.

The first thing I noticed was that my speedometer stopped working. A while later, at low rpms between gears, the engine stalled (she starts right up, afterwards). Then the CEL came on. As I was pulling into my driveway, the engine seemed to be misfiring or starved for fuel. I went out again and everything seemed to be fine, but when I let the rpms go down, she'd stall on occasion.

I see that the ECU uses info from the speed sensor. Additionally, there's a buffer circuit between the two.

I havent chked the code, yet. Am I on the right track?

or it could be the speedo head there are problems with them in

98 and 99 outbacks to many i've seen

  2. Hi All,

I am knew to this site. You probably get sick of people asking about purchasing certain vehicles, but Ive never owned a Subaru and am considering getting one for the wife.

98 Outback w/ 2.5L motor. Has about 112,000 miles salesman told me. He did tell me up front that the motor is a little noisy at start up. Said something about the stroke being longer for that year engine. Said thats what causes the motor to be a little loud at start up. Really liked the salesman. Wasnt real pushy. His wife is driving the car now. I havent even seen the car. Is he feeding me a line about the reason for the motor. Told me to go to the Subaru dealer and ask him and that they would confirm what he is saying.

Anything that I should look at in particular when I look at the vehicle or ask?

Thanks for all the help and sorry for the long post!!

    PS..He's asking $5000

98 outback had piston slap and was a year that was bad for them also 99 is a better year to buy one 97 's also problem year started piston slap and headgasket issues i work at a dealership i've seen this

  3. Brus Brother,

I'm confused as to why you see no difference in the use of lowercase and capital letters when you used CAPS to put emphisis on some of your statements. When read these statement seemed as if they would have been yelled if you were speaking them. I apologize for my use of capital letters and punctuation, whether it be correct or not. I will not return to writing with alllower case. if i thought i was going to be graded on spelling and grammer i'd go somewhere else.

internet writing format: make it readable, misspelling fine, punctuation mistakes whatever, as long as we can read it

hey man i agree with you that guy is the one who should leave this site

and go somewhere else he was quite rude

  4. ENOUGH ALREADY!

While I don't expect that any of us on here have doctorate degrees (I do), this nonsense about criticizing punctuation or the ever popular, "Don't use all capital letters, it's yelling!" is absurd. As high as I turn up the volume on my speakers, I've never noticed any "loudness" from capital letters.

I've received emails from Wall Street guys who type without any capital letters at all... guess they invest their "capital" in better places.

I've seen contributions to this site from guys (and gals) for whom English is a second language, yet they give it their best shot. Bravo.

I've gotten letters from others with professional degrees like mine who might seem dumb as dirt as evidenced in their writing, but SO WHAT????

    DID YOU HEAR ME????

    GET OVER IT HENRY HIGGINS!!!!

This site is about sharing Subaru experiences and helping others who may not have the same education OR sensibilities as you.

    Let's get back to business.

dude chill out and don't be so critical not all of us are perfect like you

  5. Fellers,

Clutch is slipping on my OBW, 5 speed MT with 238k miles (not bad for original clutch). How much should I expect to spend at the dealer to replace clutch? Is this a tuff job or could I trust another shop to do this?

    thanks

    Tdog

each dealer is different with rates probably around $800, just a guess, i'm sure any side auto shop could do it for a bit cheaper but hey the mileage is awesome keep on going, there is a subaru site called the subaru high mileage club you should join with the mileage you have, good luck!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. I have a 91 Loyale wagon that the check engine light comes on every now and then. When the light comes on, the idle constantally canges, going from 800 rpm up to about 1500-2000 rpm and back down rappidly. Any ideas?

    Thanks

yes my 94 loyale did that the check engine light came on, it was a code for a idle air speed control valve, the car would start racing up and down then the check engine light came on, see if this is the same instance or code, this only did this now when i came to a stop at a light or just at idle

  7. Hello everyone happy new year! Well its just amazing the amount of headgasket issues i have seen at my dealership within the last 2 weeks with the conditioner recall, sometimes that stuff does not stop the leak.So far i have seen 2002

impreza outback sport,2000 outback,2001 subaru forester that were all leaking

and the conditioner has not stopped the leak.On the other hand we just had a

1999 legacy outback towed in with headgaskets leaking also.A girl came in with a 1999 legacy sus sedan with leaking headgaskets to, her coolant resevoir was full of oil, so we told her not to drive the car. this issue with headgaskets is getting way out of control i hope subaru cures this issue, i would be interested in hearing other peoples issues they have had with headgaskets.

  8. we had just had problems with a 1998 subaru outback we did everything from coil pack to plugs and wires to a top end cleaner to a new fuel injector and nothing worked, then we had to remove the head ,the misfire was #3 consistant.

It ended up needing new valves, believe or not car ran great after that. this car had other issues to we had it for about 2 months at the dealership of course we had other repairs done and we had a second car to. the dealership was great and the mechanic was wonderful this dealership i would bring it back to any day

  9. hey everyone thanks for the advice on doing a compression check.Today we did a compression test and everything was normal no problems. My god this one is a tuffy!!!!!!!!! The valves were checked and we had made sure they didn't drop

sometimes these subarus do that. i'm thinking maybe something wrong with the head, we also checked the timing and that was ok to.Hope to figure something out, i would appreciate any more input from anyone.

  10. A 1998 subaru outback with a #4 cylinder misfire. Replaced plugs and wires, still running bad, replaced coil pack, still running bad. put fuel injector cleaner in and top end cleaner, still running bad, replaced fuel injector for #4 still running bad.

anybody with any ideas, keep in mind that check engine light comes back on with #4 misfire after you clear the code then test drive it.

  11. Hi. I am brand new here and I am having the EXACT same problem with my '98 legacy. I've had both front axels replaced thinking it was the CV joints. :-\

    What is torque bind?????

    Thanks,

    K

torque bind is your tranfer clutches for your awd, they bind when you turn it feels like the whole car is jittering and shaking. they are in the back of your transmission they need to be replaced could be costly depending on the dealer.

the dealership i work at the repair is about $900 or so, it won't go away, once they start to bind they are pretty much shot

  12. hey i have a 1999 legacy outback that had the same problem, mine had to be replaced with a reman transmission. It was still under factory warranty. internal seal failure was the problem, on the other hand mine would race up when i would come off a hill and the the tach would be at the other side then it would lurch hard into gear. this even did it on the driveway i have an incline also.

    good luck!

  13. hey how is everyone? well guys i told you that i work in a subaru dealership and we had a 97 outback with headgaskets gone, well car is doing great but, we just had 2 subaru's towed to our dealership with 1 overheating and the other one leaking coolant pretty bad. the first one was another 1997 outback with 104k on it temp needle kept pinned on hot, not good he had overheated a couple of times, so we sent the heads to be machined which are ok good for his sake so we need to put the engine back together and it should be ok!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

then another car came in which was a forester 1999 or 2000 about 90k on it with coolant leaking pretty good it had the conditioner recall but guess what this one did not hold with the reconditioner, not good. so this one had headgaskets done and all oil seals done including rear baffle plate. all of a sudden headgaskets galore we have them but not as many as now, i had known there was problems 1997-1999 2.5 engines with headgaskets but ya know its pretty bad i have worked for there for about 2yrs or so, my customers have complained to subaru and subaru has hepled them with the repair which was great. subaru is good about helping there customers. i have an outback 59k on it if headgaskets go on mine of course it will be cheaper for me to have the repair done cause i work there. so anyone want to share any headgasket stories with me let me know i curiuos to hear about it gotta go

  14. heh very nice outback looks sharp 120k service coming up i would do all fluids, filters, plugs and wires and maybe even check on timing belt at that year timing belt should have been replaced at 105k don't let the headgasket problem scare you any car could have that problem new or used but hey good luck enjoy it. i have a 99 outback and love it!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. i am a extreme subaru fan! i love subarus have owned many

    peace out

  16. 97 OB. Head gaskets went at 160k miles. I've heard some higher. 180 or 190 I think. Still... there are those that haven't gone out yet, and probably never will.

In my case, it never overheated either. I discovered the sludge and bubbles in the coolant expansion bottle.

    Commuter

amazing isn't it we had brought it in for service a little ways back and now it just happened so quick ya know but still a great car. runs very strong now it needs just a wash. which i will do! thanks for replying.
