yup my pops is indeed running into problems. when he starts the car you can hear a breif (1-3 sec) soft volume tap tap tap tap tap and the whole car shakes to the tapping. Then when i brake the car it does not brake smooth it shifts forward in a light unsteady motion. I told my pops "sell it while it is still alive!"

lol so true man i wish you told me this earlier, he was getting mad when i tried to put input on some things. Yea that is crazy how the HG displays its problems. I think the best move is to sell the car now as is and avoid the risk. when you say pass compression check do you mean that a test for problem gases in my coolant may fail?

My dad had a friend (mechanic) stop by. He made me put the car back together. He started the car and said it definitley was not the head gasket. He removed the thermostat and left it out. The car ran perfect (no more overheating). I am pissed because I believe removing the thermostat is not solving the problem. I am going to go to the Subaru Dealership to buy a thermostat from them according to my vin.

what do you think? this guy said he would do the job for $200 and he has experience with this car....and you basically said it was hell, would you charge someone 200 for the job? and if not, what would you do if you were trying to scam someone? or take a shortcut.

hello everyone, I have removed a couple things from the engine this week including, air filter, intake, belts, radiator, fans, hoses, and moved power steering out of the way. I posted a gig on craigslist requesting engine removal help for $100. Today I received a offer to change my head gasket for a total of $200. The person told me engine removal was unecssasary and that all he had to do was slightly move the engine. Then he mentioned he sprays a copper spray to assure it seals. Anyways, I just want some input, should I go for it? any tips?

I will try to avoid creating a new thread, because i do understand what you mean and it makes perfect sense to do so since I am trying to reach only 1 goal. Yet, I notice that I cannot post a new picture on this thread, so if I face a unknown part I may post a new thread and I want to apoligize in advance if it bothers you. I also had the assumption that people who read this post may not want to go thru everyone elses comment in order to provide help and that is why I made subordinate posts for specific questions. hi, i have a 1999 subaru outback legacy wagon. I am trying to disconect the electrical connector at the fuel pump which according to my book pg4-3 is located in the trunk underneath the carpet liner. I am not trying to do too much interior damage. I am hoping someone can direct me towards where the connection is if i am facing the trunk in respect to the upper left, lower left, upper right, lower right corners of the trunk wit the tire being the center of these directions. another question i have is...i have already disconected my intake. and according to the book i have to start the car to relieve my fuel pressure. is it possible to start my car and relieve the fuel pressure while my intake is disconected?

i'm working on my car right now (5pm est.), i have to relase the fuel pressure but i disconnected the black plastic intake. and i just read that in order to relieve the fuel pressure i need to turn the car on. so do i have to re-attach the intake to do this?

HI, I am in the process of taking my engine out (1999 subaru outback legacy) and according to my manual removing the a/c is a risk because of high pressure. My question is what is the worst that can happen during a accident with the a/c. I also read that moving the a/c out of the way to remove my engine is possible, but the manual doesn't state wheather i should empty my a/c of gases before moving it out of the way and it does not state which specific connection or valve should I be cautious of.

yes very good reply, lifting the engine was a concern next to avoiding dangerous high pressure connections. I use a video camera and take pictures so I am confident with keeping track of bolts. the labor cost was a big issue thanks. how much does my engine weigh? do you know of any picture walkthroughs around?
