  1. I think I count 23 on the axel. So now I need to know what the compressed length should be. Basically, one of them didn’t fit the splines and the other one was too long. And please let me know if you have a preferred source.
  2. I have a 1985 hatchback. So basically it is more like the older generation. Tried to replace the CV axles and the shop got the wrong ones. Anyone know of a good source for these and also how to let them know how many splines I need? Basically, is there any way other than pulling the axle back up and counting the splines from the transmission of knowing which ones I should order?
  3. Hi guys. My temperature gauge isn’t working and I know it is probably the sensor. I found one going into the intake manifold. I’m just not sure if that is the right one. It sounds like there might be two of them on this model. If it is working I really don’t want to mess with it. I have the hand manual and know how to check but I want to make sure I’m checking the right sensor. Could anybody with the same motor send me a picture? My Haynes manual is not exactly helping.
  4. I was a frequent visitor about 10 years back when I had my silver dual range 1984 GL. I had to sell to get a car for the kids. Well, the kids are teens and I found my dream machine. It’s 2 doors and a hatch this time. Up in Montana where old subies thrive. My local parts guy has retired so I may need help finding stuff. Happy to be back.
  5. The window switch broke off in the rear passenger door. Can I just bypass this so that I can controle it from the center console? Right now it won't work at all.
  6. That did the trick. I'm trying to get better about poking around in here a bit before I start a new thread. Thanks again.
  7. a/c is a yes, and I've traced it back to there so pretty sure that's it. The oil is really just a coating and a little wet so I'll follow your advice and keep an eye. I just switched out the rear fuel filter and there seems to be a lot more life in the engine. I'm glad I found this message board. Everyone here has been a lot of help.
  8. Thanks. Pretty sure it is Oil. Dripping right at the back where the drive shaft leaves to head to the rear wheels.
  9. I'm losing oil and its dripping from the transmission. What's the most likely culprit? How hard is the fix? Also, There is a hose dangling just next to the passenger side front wheel.Where is this coming from and where should it go? Is it possible I have a vacuum hose that has fallen off and needs to be reconnected?
  10. I will give it a go. Is it strange that it would only lose power in third?
  11. I'm hoping that this is not a transmission problem.
  12. If it helps, it sort of surges and drops out, I can feel it lose power in spurts.
  13. So, I'm driving the new rig home and as I charge a hill in 3rd the thing seems to lose power right above 3000 rpms. Doesn't happen in any other gear that I can tell. I just got irt and haven't looked at the fuel filter, it also has the original carb. Any ideas? It happens even when level, and always above 3000 rpms.
  14. If you look at the little picture you'll see I picked up the car. It is in pretty amazing condition. I went over it with a fine toothed comb and everything looks great. There are two small issues I'll address in another thread. Thanks again for all of the help!
  15. Thanks, will do. It spent most of its life in Missoula, so salt's probably not an issue. I'll definitely look for the rust. Any specific tips are really helpful.
  16. I'm going to check it out tomorrow. He came down to 1600, and with the extra rims, and if it is rust free, I think I have to say yes. You'll probably be hearing from me a bit more on these threads as I start to make it my own. I'll try to post pictures and give you an update after I see it. Thanks again for all of your input.
  17. kbb only goes back to 91 and i always feel like nada isn't realistic for a daily driver. I just joined this group recently but I've been learning from it for a while. So, any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
  18. Everybody here was such a great help on the last wagon I was looking at, I'm hoping for more. Here's the description: 1984 Subaru GL wagon 4 x4. 4 spd, A/C, cruise control, power windows, power mirrors, tilt steering wheel, radio & cassette, and block heater. Only 91,800 miles. Extra set of wheels with studded snow tires mounted on them included. New battery, belts, and wiper blades. What do you think, is 2000 a good price for this car? The paint looks about right for 27 years outside in MT.
  19. Thanks a lot everybody. I think I'll offer him 600 and let him get back to me in a couple of weeks if he wants to take the offer. I would like to have the GL over a 93 legacy I'm also looking at, but maybe it just isn't in the cards.
  20. It is a 1988 GL wagon with 235,000 on it. New timing belt, clutch, head gaskets, plugs and wires. I'll be driving through a mountain pass to work 25 miles, each way, every day. Plus the occasional forest access.
  21. There is rust on the rear driver's side panel of a GL I'm thinking of picking up. I live in MT, so what do you think? Is there a good chance there is rust on the frame? I think I can get it for 900. I have a 90 that has a busted transmission, and I've always liked the optional 4wd on these older ones.
