I'm facing this exact problem with some white wheels I bought and re-painted...to put on my '87 GL. I'm not even going to try and look for the real parts. Modifying some plastic u-channel seems like the way to go. I will post here in the following week to show what I come up with. It will work.

Me in 1989 with my first Subaru. It was a 1981 DL with 102,000k I bought from a dealer. Perfect cosmetic condition, but I soon learned the ins and outs of changing CV joints, bearings, the clutch cable, the clutch and a couple of other things. But I could not live without AWD and I replaced it a couple of years later with a proper 1985 GL. Strangely, I have no pictures of that car!
