  1. I had the battery checked and it tested fine, the guy recharged it and gave it back to me at the end of the day. I put everything back together and tried to fire up and still nothing. I tried a few more times, and still nothing. By the fifth or so try, I floored the gas pedal and it started to respond. I tried again giving it more gas and it fired up, idling rough. I turned it off and started again, and it fired up again. It idled at 2000rpm for a while, so I turned it off, started again, and it lowered the idle. It seems to be running fine now, but why did I need to floor it to start it? It had been sitting for 3 weeks, maybe something setttled in the fuel lines? Should I change the fuel filter? Thanks everyone!
  2. Tightened the alternator and it hasn't helped.
  3. I'll try charging the battery and see if that helps Thanks
  4. Hi guys I am kind of desperate, I am selling my '92 loyale and was supposed to have a few people come by tomorrow to check it out. I had problems with my car staying on, advice from this board said it was the alternator so I got it tested and sure enough it was dead. So I got a new one and installed it. The car started up fine before I took off the old alternator, but wouldn't stay running. Now I can't even start it with the new alternator. It sounds kind of wheezy when starting. My lights and everything aren't dim, so it's not the battery (and it was tested before and in good condition) What would cause this? All I did was take off the battery leads and the two wires from the back of the alternator. Any help is greatly appreciated. This is the first time I have experienced this problem in over a year of daily driving. Thanks
  5. Right before I took off the alternator it started up and I was able to move it forward. When I installed the new alternator it turns over but just makes a wheezy sound and won't actually start. All I did was touch the battery cables and the two wires on the alternator side. Why won't it start now? It has always started up until I got this new alternator?
  6. Hi All I just replaced the alternator on my 1992 loyale 4wd How can I get the belts tighter? I have the alternator pulled up as far as I can on the adjusting side, but the outer belt still has a lot of slack in it I thought it was enough, but when I tried starting it, it wouldn't start and it made a weird noise (probably the belt slipping) suggestions? It seems like it should be eaiser to adjust the slack. Maybe I need someone to pull up on it with more force while I tighten the belt?
  7. dang, not the reply I wanted, but very good to know. I'll return the alternator today and see what the new one costs. thanks! definitely saved me a lot of confusion in the future!
  8. Yes theres belts on both, I thought this was common? I'll take a pic if neccessary
  9. my alternator has the double belt pulley and the one Canadian tire (cheaper than Lordco) ordered from me has the single pulley. The old alternator pulley bolt is rusted on there pretty good. How can I get the old pulley off to swap onto the new alternator? I could use a screw driver to jam the pulley, but I don't want to wreck the alternator. Or is it better to return the one I have now and get the alternator with the double pulley already installed? Thanks... weather has been crappy so it's been a slow process swapping the old one out
  10. search came up with this : http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=98709&highlight=trouble+codes Where does the loyale fit in? Will it display more than one code (seperate codes by a 10 second delay or something?) or will it only display one code? Thanks!
  11. Where do you suggest buying it from? I live in Victoria, BC so don't have the surplus of auto parts stores like the US. Thanks
  12. thanks for the suggestions guys. I will check the fuse and cables before I order a new alternator. I got the haynes manual for these cars, will this describe the procedure for jumping the connector for checking the codes?
  13. I should add the check engine light is also on, but has been on since I bought the car last Feb. P.O. said there was a short for that light.
