I have this to work with for the Legacy wiring. But once I break down the Legacy wiring to what I need, will I need to splice in the plugs from things like the tach, oil pressure gauge, battery gauge, or any other dash gauge function? Probably forgetting a few.. I'm not sure how to tell what wires from the Brat dash gauge plugs should be soldered to which Legacy ECU wires? One reason why I was considering fitting the Legacy dash gauges..

Ok.. I'm stumped. While taking apart the 89 hatch dash board, I found this. I assume an ECM The Brat never had one of these, nor the wiring for it. Every plug here is accounted for. As for the manual that I have for the earlier wiring diagram. It shows the wiring diagram for an 86 Brat to have an ECM. How was I driving this Brat for 6 months without an ECM?

Tomorrow I will drop the rear end, get the tank out, take some pictures and get back to you. I've never shipped anything that big, never mind a gas tank. Can you really just ship it in a box??
-
Now that I read this again I'm wondering if you were just asking about the gas tank. It seems to look pretty good, better than mine, but the pump/level indicator is just RUST. I'm afraid to even touch the bolts. Same with the bolts that hold the tank to the body. It was sitting for 9 years.. :-\

It's got the dual range 4spd. But You're in Portland and I'm in Massachusetts, it's not really drivable.. I've already taken the engine out, half the dash board, struts were not even attached at the tophat. I had planned on cutting some of it's sheet metal out to weld into holes in the Brat. I definitely am using the wind shield and the front fenders. I guess for whats left I would take any reasonable offer. If you want what's left. There are numerous mouse nests through out it, my father used a tractor to push it around so both bumper mounts are mangled. It has also been sitting for 9 years. I could send you some more pictures if your really interested.

Passenger side, not bad just a little rust at the bottom. Driver side, same thing, little rust at the bottom, but I had to beat the piss out of it to get it open. The whole locking mechanism was completely rusted frozen. I tried spraying it will liquid wrench, freeze-off, and some other lubricants but in the end, I just used a pry bar and a hammer to "dismantle" the locking mech.. Gotta admit, it was a lot of fun.

You are referring to the door glass not the wind shield correct?
-
That's cool. The doors on the Brat are in better shape anyway. I just took out some anger on my fenders about 6 years back..
-
So here's my 89 hatch. Fenders are a perfect fit for the Brat! Which is nice cuz I need new fenders. And the wind shield measures up, that's a big plus! Any one need any parts from an 89 hatch?
-
Thanks for setting me straight. lol I will make sure not to make that mistake again!
-
Epic link! This is what my 89 hatch looks like. But this is the ea82 hatch?
-
So the ea82 looks more like the RX? Like my old RX...
-
Alrighty then. Wish I had known better back then. I would have taken better care of it.. I'm going to pick it up tomorrow and see what I can't salvage from it. I remember the engine running but with many oil leaks. The transmission shifted great, and the dual range worked great. Only reason I stopped driving it was because the muffler fell off, engine needed all new gaskets and I lost my job. I thought for sure that he had scrapped it already. But if the wind shield fits, it will save me a few hundred bucks. And because it was surrounded by trees the interior pieces I need aren't sun faded!

How do you tell the difference between an ea81 hatch and an ea82 3door coupe? I thought a 3door coupe was a hatch.. Not sure if this helps? VIN# JF2AF53B1KE101312 This is what I've been able to find. JF Fuji Heavy Industries. 2 Multi purpose vehicle F Body type --- but It only lists C-4door and N-station wagon 5 1800cc AWD 3 GL model B 3001-4000 weight class 1 Check digit K Model year 89 E Gumma manufacture 4WD 5SPD Dual range. Tho I'm sure it only had a 4spd 101312 Sequential Number. Says 200001 and after 4door sedan 400001 and after Station Wagon. But doesn't say what 100001 and after mean.

Will a wind shield from a 1989 Subaru GL 3 door hatch fit a 1986 Subaru Brat?

http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=117101&highlight=custom&page=3 86Hatchback check this out. I think that's what 1982gl4 did.

Using the ea81 control arms? Interesting idea. Not sure how safe I feel about my welding skills to do something like that. All I have is a stick welder and I'm still kinda learning. I'm comfortable welding sheet metal in places to replace rust holes but I don't know if I trust myself welding any thing structural like that. I'm really hoping that my 89 GL hatch cross member and control arms fix the problems.
-
I found this but is there anything else I should be aware of? Also, the Brat never had cruise control. Is it possible to use the cruise control components from the Legacy?
-
That makes sense. I will definitely look into heat shrink. You wouldn't happen to have a list of these things would you?
-
Right.. I meant speedo cable.. My bad. I do know how to solder and I thought electrical tape would do the trick vs. heat shrink.. What type of strange behavior are you talking of? And which optional connections would fix this behavior? As for the label maker, I hear you there! My duct tape/sharpie marker labels are already starting to become hard to read.. But between the 2 Legacy manuals and the 3 Brat manuals, I think I can figure out what's what. I spoke to my father last week and he told me that my first car, 89 Subaru GL 3 door is still out behind his house. I went to check it out today hoping that it was an ea82 that I could take the cross member and lower control arms from. but when I popped the hood I found a clearly marked ea81. When I shoved my head underneath, I noticed that the control arms are straight from the cross member not angle back like my Brat. I'm going to try to pick it up this week so I can get underneath it better and get accurate measurements. Some A-hole smashed my Brat wind sheild so I took some rough measurements of the GL 3 door wind shield. They seem to be the same size. Does any one know if they are compatible?

Thanks. Good to know! If the price on the wiring harness wasn't so high, I would have already sent it out. I have considered it. I bought a shop repair manual specifically for the 98 Legacy wagon. Kinda frustrating having it on a pdf file with the LHD, RHD and Taiwan models all bunched together, but I've printed out all of the proper wiring diagrams. I have the wiring harness almost completely apart and I have everything labelled and grouped. Will I need to splice in any of the wiring from the brat? Or can I run just the engine off the ECU and everything else from the original Brat wiring? If I'm going to use the original dash gauges, I will have to swap the tach cable right?

Is there going to be a lack of fuel pressure because of the fuel injected ej22 using the gas tank and fuel lines from the carburated ea81? This came from the Legacy gas tank. I found the Brats' fuel pump(I think) tucked up in the undercarriage but not sure if it will be enough. I keep reading ej swap threads that say that you don't need another fuel pump but I think that they were in an ea82? Might have been SPFI to begin with.. And other ej swap threads of those who have installed an external fuel pump..
-
May I ask what components it took to do the 6 lug swap? I'm doing a 5 lug swap in my 86 Brat and I've had to use XT6 parts, Legacy parts and Brat parts, as well as some custom parts. I can't recall a Subaru that has a 6 lug hub so I'm curious.

A little project I like to call Gloria (GL+RE+EA)

I hear what you're saying. I tried to change the lower ball joints out to the Brat ball joints with the 1 1/4 exhaust pipe shim(Great idea by the way). Took both Brat ball joints out no problem But the first Legacy ball joint bolt sheered off at the head. Just my luck... Tomorrow I have snow coming in so I have to work. But next chance I get, I will drill that out, try to get the other out, fit the brat ball joints in there and drop the front end down. I think I may still have to open up the wheel wells a bit to get the struts to fit a little less snug... They rub when turning the knuckle.. Cleaned out cabin air box/mouse nest as well as every air distribution piece that sits under the dash. Started simplifying my Legacy wiring harness and have a question. Would it be possible to use the wiring and gauges from the legacy? I figure the ecu is controlling the engine, should have no problem displaying all the gauges from the Legacy dash with the correct wiring. I will have to do some cutting and modifying of the Brad dash to fit the gauges but I have a couple dash trims to play with to make the Legacy gauges fit.
