  1. As mentioned in another thread I've just replaced my '98 outback with an '09 and I wanted to make sure my existing snow tires will work. the snow tires from the '98 are "205 70R 15" the tires on the '09 are "225 60R 16" if I use the math from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plus_sizing or the tool located here http://www.cargister.com/calculator-tire I get a difference in circumfrence of about 1 inch, and a difference at the Speedo of about 1.25% with the snows being smaller and slower. That does not seem like enough to worry about and in the past if run much bigger differences on some of the old POS cars I've had. But this car isn't a POS so I wanted to make sure these will be OK. Thanks
  2. Thanks Sadly I've had to put it out to pasture.. even if I got it working again it was only going to be around for a short time there were other near terminal issues. I was offered an '09 at a good price so I changed.
  3. I have a '98 legacy outback, recently my fuel gauge stopped working. I opened the access panels to see if it was obvious which side needed to be replaced. The passenger side was fine but the driver side wires were a mass of corrosion, just one touch and the yellow and black wire crumbled into nothing. Now the car wont start at all and it is a very long walk to the wreckers for a replacement sender. Is the sender really why the car wont start or is it just a bizarre coincidence? If this is the issue is there a recommended hack to get the car moving again so I can at least drive to get he new part? Thanks all
  4. I've got a '98 Legacy Outback 5 Spd Manual. The speedometer / odometer decided to quit last week, the fuel gauge died a couple of months ago. (I can live without either one but can’t live without both) EDIT: The car still seems to run fine .. I have a CEL but have had it for quite some time anyway. The Speedo has died in a manner consistent with the '99 Speedo issue, I've changed out the gauge cluster with one from a wrecker but there was no difference. I’m in the process of cleaning the contacts etc.. in the hopes that that might fix things (it is out of the car now anyway). Is there a link to a detailed description of this job? If that does not work is there anything else I should try before I replace the Speed Sensor? Am I correct in believing that there is only one speed sensor for the manual transmission? If so does anyone know what part number I would be after?
