ABS problems
whitetm replied to whitetm's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
My Nephew told me that the original issue was, on his way home from work one day he lost all power. When he pulled off to the side of the road, he popped the hood and noticed the 1.25 (45 amp)fuse link had blown. So he made a jumper wire out of 10 gage wire and installed it to get himself home. Thats when every thing went wrong. Pretty soon the transmission would sift, then the abs light came on, his head lights blew and pretty soon the battery was going dead. Well when I got the car to find out what happened. First the alternator wasn't putting anything out, so it was replaced it and the battery. I also replace the fuse-link. Started the car and the fuse link was fine. Second replaced the head lights, now they were fine. Third, I opened the trans mission control module and found that there was a blown capacitor and 2 power transistors blew, so I replaced that module, the car shifts fine now. The last thing is the abs module problem to fix. The only thing that I can think that would do all of this is, the alternator must have went ballistic and over amped/voltage to take out the fuse-link and when my nephew put the jumper in-place of the fuse-link it must have created all of these other issues. -

It show continuity still, but it doesn't blow the fuse when I turn the key on. But if I plug the abs control module in and then turn the key on, the fuse blows in a heart beat. It seems to be pointing to the abs control module to be the problem, but I could be wrong. -

I think that the abs control unit must have a short in it. -

I was just wondering if someone has a schematic of the ABS control module, so I might see which component went bad in it ? -

Hey Gloyale, Well I plugged everything back in except the ABS control module and the fuse did NOT blow. I'm wondering if I should now disconnect each wheel sensor and plu the ABS control module back in and see if the fuse blows? If you have any suggestions to diagnose what could be bad, I would greatly appreciate it. I did talk to my nephew about the problems with the car and he told me ever sense the fuse link blew when the alternator went ballistic, thats when all the problems started. slowly but surely I've been correcting each of the problems and the only one left is the ABS situation. -

You were right I ended up pulling out the passenger seat and pulling up the carpet and found it. Time to due a little processes of elimination to find out whats going on with it. -

There's only a heater duct under the passenger seat. I wonder on this '96 Impreza Outback if it happened to be during a change to a new configuration when it was manufactured? -

I did that. but when i pulled the radio console and the center console out if the car to expose everything there, thats what is mounted to the car. and there's nothing mounted under the passenger seat. -

The one under the radio is mounted to the hump of the floor just forward of the transmission shifter and it's label is the SRS control box with yellow plugs to designate that. -

Fairtax3me gave me a link to get another service manual to look at. I did see the 2 wire data connector in that manual withe the same wire color code as mine does. My question would be, which wire of the data connector would be connected to the grd terminal to get the abs codes? The wire colors in the black data connector are gy and wr. -

From the service manual I have, the schematic shows the ABS and PUMP are together as one unit -

This car doesn't have cruise control on it. The plug is shaped the same as you illistrated, but the wires are 1 blue, 1 blue/green, 1 white. the wire location in the plug are the blue is #1, white #2 and the blue/green #4 and the 2 grounding terminals come out of the same wire loom as the black plug as well. -

Any idea about the proper diagnostic connector? the one the repair manual that i have refers to the 6 pin connector and use the #3 and #6 termals, but there are no wires plugged into the #3 and #6 holes. -

It bows as soon as the key is turned on. It even blew after the abs plugs were removed from the whole control unit/pump. Is the pump and control unit one piece? right side of engine compartment? The light stays on constantly. -
I have a 1996 Subaru Impreza Outback, the wire loom that has a black connector and 2 black wire terminals. the black connector it self has 3 wires in it and the colors are 1 blue, 1 blue/green, 1 white. the wire location in the plug are the blue is #1, white #2 and the blue/green #4. There are no wires in #3 and #6 positions, does anybody have a wiring diagram that can verify this configuration? the black plug is referred to as a B-82 plug from what i have. but the manual i have refers the color of wires to be 1 orange/white and a light-green/white. so i don't know if the manual is really the proper one for this car. I also noticed that fuse # 18 keeps blowing, I even disconnected the plugs that go to the ABS control/pump and the fuse still blows. Any ideas on that one?
