  1. No the anti rattle clips are in place and they have not filed any thing down as yet. Certainly there appears to be some play on the slide pins.

Could be the brake pad backing plates are small. Has the dealer fitted the "anti-rattle clips", ie. those metal clips that snap onto the caliper and form the rails for the pads to slide in?

At one stage the backing plates were a bit to large and this caused binding which led to uneven brake pad wear and brake dragging. Dealers were instructed to file away the ends of the backing plates. Only a tiny amount. If someone has done this to a backing plate twice, then it might be small enough to rattle?

  2. I have a 2004 2.ltr Forester which I am very pleased about with the exception of a rattle on the front calipers. The dealer initially told me that the wrong grease had been used on the caliper slide pins, and I watched them replace the grease and all was well for abour 2000 miles when the rattle started again. The dealer is now telling me that Subaru have stoped using the damper pin on the caliper (which appears to be the top slide pin which has a rubber ring about half way along it) which is causing the problem. However they are not prepared to replace my pin with the damper version unless Subaru tell them to do so which they are not, as aparently my vehicle and a few others are isolated cases.

Has any one else come across this problem?

  3. I brought my first Forester last September since when I have covered some 5500 miles. Recently I started to hear a loud rattle from the front end on uneven ground. The dealer tell me it is the front caliper pins which instead of being lubricated with grease are only oiled which is causing the problem. I believe they are correct as if I touch the brakes when the rattle is preesent it stops. They are going to sort it tomorrow. My question is has any one else had this problem, and is it as simple to fix as just adding a bit of grease? The dealer tells me that this is only the second case of this they have had. Funny enough both on the same day!!

  4. I have recently brought a new Forester and the deflectors you mention are standard add on items for it in the uk and are available from main dealers and cost about £80 uk. I dont have the catalogue at present otherwise I would give you the part number. My point is that if they are available for the Forester then they are more than likley available for your car as well.

I Have Recently Purchased A 2005 Subaru Outback 2.5i Wagon. I Am Very Happy With It And Have Been Buying Some Additional Items To Put On The Car. I Am Very Interested In Buying Side Window Deflector/ Deflectors. I Have Seen Some Subarus On The Road With Them But Have Not Had Any Luck Trying To Locate Where To Purchase Them. I Have Searched The Internet But Had No Luck. I Know That They Are Very Hard To Find Because Subarus Generally Don't Have The Frame Around The Door Windows. This Frame Is Usually Where The Deflectors Mount. The Deflectors I've Seen On Other Cars Has Been A One Piece Unit That Mounts Above The Windows At The Roofline. If Anyone Has Any Info On These Deflectors It Would Be Greatly Appreciated. Thank You All...
  5. This may not be a lot of help to you but I have a 2004 2ltr manual transmission Forester and I can get between 32 to 38 mpg depending on how I drive. 24 sounds very low to me. A friend has a 2.5 auto legacy and he says he gets an average of 31 mpg.

Hi All New member to this site

I have a 2001 Forester S w/58,000 miles. I recently did a complete tune-up with new Iridium spark plugs,PCV valve,Fuel Filter,K&N drop in air filter, and all fluids were changed to synthetic. Tires are inflated properly and no pulling either.I commute 90 miles a day at 65mph maintained for the most part and right now I am not using A/C. With all that I am only averaging 24 MPG :(( .

Any one have any ideas to improve this mileage ???

I thought I would be getting close to 30 mpg

Your help will be greatly appreciated

    Nick in New Orleans

  6. Thanks that confirms what I thought and what the manual hints at but does not say. With all the rain we have had in the last few days I will have need of it soon.

Just noticed you are not in the US :)

I have High/Low range on my '88 GL wagon. Seperate selector lever for the dual range. You can switch it while moving but not very fast. I only do it in 1st gear really. Clutch in and shift into high or low.

If you had to come to a complete stop to do it the manual would warn your to do so. I wouldnt worry about it. Just dont do it while going over 25mph and you'll be fine

  7. Its definately a high/low ratio with its own lever beside the handbrake, but thanks any way.

I do not belive any US spec Foresters have High/Low ratio (or range) I know over seas you could get dual range (high and low) but I don't think you could even get that over here.

Maybe it's talking about dissenguaging an 'overdrive' feature? I know when towing things you should disenguage overdrive if so equiped. That would be on an automatic transmission however. Is this an AT or MT ?

  8. This is my first Subaru Forester. The handbook is less than informative about the low ratio sugesting that when starting on a hill with a loaded trailer low ratio should be enguaged. However it does not tell you whether a move to high ratio can be made on the move and at what speed. Subaru dealer is no help and Subaru UK decline to answer my e-mails. Does any one have any information on this please. Having only just got it I dont realy want to bugger it up.

  9. Thanks I will give it a try.

How odd that a service manual is not available to you there! In any case, the following website can provide you with all the factory documentation of your vehicle, albeit for a cost: http://techinfo.subaru.com/html/index.jsp

It is not the easiest site to navigate, and a subscription will cost US$20, but it is often worth the investment as it allows you to download and accumulate PDF file versions of the service manual for your car at far less than the cost of a paper copy.

Hope the site works from your location!
